Next GTA Anouncement?

Recommended Posts

Hard to tell, but I'd guess E3 '10 as being slightly more likely than other dates.

That sounds about right, since it will probably be announced at least a year before it is released and I doubt it will be released any earlier than late 2011. But I think it will be more likely early 2012.

Why do you say that? I think it will come out in 2010. The only reason Gta IV took so long to come out was because it next gen. They had to create a whole new game, with new physics, ect. Now they got all they need. They have a place to start. You know? So it shouldn't take that long to make a new one.

2011. Well, that goes for Rockstar North GTA's. It's possible that Leeds will make GTA Wii or something. Rockstar North is working on Agent next and there's no point in announcing the next GTA when they are focused on something else. I say May-July 2011 is when they officially announce it, with a release that fall (assuming it will be another GTA IV era GTA).

Yet alot of people think GTAIV should've been a bit bigger and should've had more side missions ect. So you would expect that R* will be hoping to improve on the IV series which means more work, plus R* have had a chunk of the team tied up working on the DLC for over a year. Also they have to write a new story plus new funny dialogue for peds, adds, and tv shows.

They might of got VC out quickly after III but they would've been buzzing with fresh ideas back then.

Yes, but do you really think they are only starting to work on Next now? Sure, they pushed through two DLC packs, but these are mostly new characters, story, and scripts. Did the mappers, vehicle designers, and other team members simply take a year off? Either Next or something entirely new from R* has been in the works for at least a year. Perhaps more. If this is a sequel to IV running on mostly the same engine, I do not think it would be unreasonable to expect it by fall of 2010. So the odds are strongly in favor of new GTA in 2010.

No I Don't, I thought I made that clear when I said "a chunk of the team". Its known that R* always start on the next GTA title straight away if not a few months before the release of the present one, but you can't say that the DLC hasn't sucked up resources. 2010 is unreasonable to expect at this point, if it was to be a 2010 release R* would've given some info by now.

And there was absolutely nothing on San Andreas until E3 of the release year, and just a few months later we've had gameplay screenshots. Similar story with IV, and with gameplay first shown even closer to release. Rock Star has always kept details of their current project under a tight lid until about half a year to release. Lack of info is absolutely no indication of no plans to release the game. I suspect, just like with San Andreas and IV, we will get the first hint that the game really exists from the financial projections that Take Two will release near the end of the year. These will simply give us an idea of whether a GTA title of any kind is planned for 2010.

It fits the pattern. GTA III was released in October of 2001, followed shortly by Vice City in October of 2002. This time, instead of one new game on virtually the same engine, Rock Star has released two content packs for the existing game. The combined payload is similar, except the map designers are virtually uninvolved in this project. San Andreas was released in October 2004. Since Vice City was entirely on a new map, this is roughly two years of map development. Fall of 2010 would mark two and a half years since release of Liberty City. More than enough time to construct a new map. The IV engine is already capable of streaming, so no major changes to the engine are necessary, unlike San Andreas. So it's only the question of whether R* creative team has enough time for a new story with new characters, scripts, and all the audio work. And that's the same scale of development as Vice City, and about the same as the two DLC packs combined. There is enough time to get a new GTA by October of 2010. If they plane a holiday release, that's even more time.

The only reasons not to try and meet 2010 release is if Rock Star is either planning something really big, which is extremely unlikely, or if they decide to let GTA cool for a bit. Later is possible, but not something I'd bet on, because development of IV was a big investment, and Rock Star aren't done milking it. So they are going to want to release a GTA in 2010. And the only question left, will something happen to hold this up. That's the uncertainty.

All in all, as I said, the new GTA in 2010 is a definite possibility. We'll have a hint of whether or not this is to be in December/January, and we'll know for sure by Summer one way or another. With some luck, by then we'll also have some specifics.

Nowdays R* seem to be announcing titles over a year in advance, GTAIV, RDR, Agent not to mention the mysterious L.A. Noire. I agree that there will be a announcement about it next year but for it to be released next year, if it was it would be a rushed job and not much of a improvement on IV.

I doubt thats what R* want.

I don't think we should expect a major improvement on IV. I'd expect a new map, a bunch of new features, hopefully a better selection of vehicles, but the same general concept as IV. Basically, closer to III->Vice than Vice->SA change. That's what the engine was built for, and in these times, I can't imagine R* doing anything other than trying to pump it for all the money they can. Even if R* themselves would have other plans, Take Two is sure to pressure them into a new title that may be a bit rushed.

And we knew about IV a bit less than a year in advance. If Next is to be released on schedule similar to Vice and SA, we should be looking at release in 12-13 months. There is time enough to put in an announcement even in IV frame. If we get a mention of it on T2 projections in December/January, it would still fit the time frame.

If we hear absolutely nothing by end of January, then I'd say that 2010 release is extremely unlikely. There is plenty of time until then, though, and 2010 release just makes sense from perspective of financial situation, available resources, and engine capabilities.

January to April 2010

I'm with you K^2 - we should expect a few more games and hope very readily that we do not see a new technology until then, and also hope it then be called V.

And, some evidence:

"built to last"

"fly to vice city!"

Historically, the game has 'Always' been LC, VC, SA.

LC is console brown, next is the complete opposite: Vibrant tropics. When that's done, the weather is ready for tweking it in between gray and colorful to what you find in between those tones: Desert etc.

LC and VC give us things you see across the whole country. Doing this order is chosen because it can be console brown (actually, it's "first gen pallet"), then Vice expands it. Everything in LC and VC goes into SA and SA still requires more things - cactus, etc.

If they did time's square, they are definitely doing Las Vegas Strip again. The hints are endless in IV too.

So I hope the NEXT GTA is announced in about 3 years, and I hope 2 more maps come out for this one, and I hope they are tied together like GTA 1 was, and you fly to them like Liberty City in San Andreas.

I think there is some degree of multitasking at Rockstar North. First of all you've got to remember that the Houser's (and Lazlow's) contribution comes fairly late. The first thing that happens is the city is researched and basic animations are made.

This is what I think the process was like for GTA IV and its episodes:

October 2004: San Andreas released

Late 2004/ Early 2005:

Rockstar Games comes up with the idea of doing a HD New York setting, North starts researching/ photographing

Rockstar North works with Leeds in the development of Liberty City Stories

October 2005: Liberty City Stories released

2005: After finishing Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition, Rockstar San Diego develops the R.A.G.E. engine

Late 2005/ early 2006: Rockstar North again assists Leeds in making Vice City Stories, IV's Liberty City is coming together, North incorporates SD's R.A.G.E. engine into development

E3 2006: Microsoft officially announces Rockstar's GTA IV along with 2 Episodic downloads

2006: Rockstar San Diego releases Table Tennis; Vice City Stories is released; Rockstar North working hard on GTA IV, Rockstar Games starts developing the story and bouncing off radio and internet ideas - leaving doors open to the episodes; mo-cap

early 2007: Rockstar North releases the first trailer, game almost finished

mid to late 2007: game finished; trouble with PS3 version - delayed to april 2008

late 2007 to early 2008: additional fine tuning to the game

April 2008: GTA IV released

mid to late 2008: work on TLAD begins/ assisting Leeds with Chinatown Wars

February 2009: TLAD released

March 2009: Chinatown Wars released

Early 2009: team begins to research cities from the game Agent; start working on TBOGT

E3 2009: Agent announced

mid to late 2009: continued development on TBOGT

two days from now: release

I see it being like this leading up to the next gta:

late 2009: focus a lot more on developing Agent, assist Leeds with next Leeds GTA

early 2010: first Agent teaser trailer released

e3 2010: next leeds GTA announced (if you look at Leeds' record they've been consistently making new GTA's since 2004 or 2005, it's inevitable that they will keep on doing this)

mid 2010: heavier involvement with Agent

October 2010: Agent released

late 2010: scouting for next GTA started

early 2011: Leeds GTA released; begin developing next GTA and fine tuning engine

e3 2011: next [rockstar north] gta announced

october 2011: next R* North gta released

I cant add anything to what K^2 has said. I do agree that they kept these guys busy and working playing with new ideas (maps, vehicles) perhaps we might even see running buses finally! But yeah i would look out for perhaps the next E3
