How to edit exported videos externally?

I exported a 720p WMV file from the video editor. Now I want to edit it with Sony Vegas. But Sony Vegas can't open it (says unsupported file type, even though it supports wmvs)

 

Movie Maker can open it, but, it's movie maker, and in addition to being a terrible program, it also can't export HD. I downloaded some WMV to AVI converter and it can't convert it either. I know tons of people have figured out how to do this. What am I missing?

Needs more codecs, install these

Then try importing them into vegas

Still won't import, even with both of those packs installed.

WMV files can be locked, i.e. copyrighted as Ms likes to sign every peace of sh*t they produce, you'll probably need a program to extract the avi files. Like "VirtualDub-MPEG2" if you catch my drift.

 

Also, never ever install more then one codec pack, you're bound to break something.
