The future of Video Games

This topic may have been posted before, but I think it contains an interesting question. How more advanced can video games possibly get?

I remember when I was a kid playing Paperboy 2 on the SNES and thinking to myself "How could they possibly make this any better?". Now, many years later playing such modern masterpiece games such as Fallout 3, GTAIV, Half-Life 2. There is a huge advancement in entertainment culture in just 10-15 years. How CAN it possibly get any more advanced from here?

It's a question you've probably pondered once or twice before. How do you imagine Video Games will be like 10-15, 20 years down the road? I personally think it will be a virtual reality, playing in a real-life but yet fictional world. Like, actually physically in a different place. f*ck yes, future.

Anyway, how do you envision it? What else can video games possibly do to make it even more technologically advanced?

Think of the most advanced set of 3D rendering animations you have ever seen in your entire life. It's not done until that is done in real time.

Games are so weak even today... I look at it and see only limitations. We are far far far from "advanced", it's not as good as it seems, and it's nowhere near where it wants to be smile.gif

For example, a polygon is infinitely thin... Models are just shells; digital papercraft. Games ain't special until everything is matter with mass. That's a long way off. smile.gif

The one thing that would make games better would be virtual reality.

You put on a special suit that makes it feel your in the game. Just picture playing Call of Duty or GTA in the virtual reality.

But I don't see it happening for a long time.

I think, I KNOW that we will be able to enter the game with a Virtual Reality suit or helmet. We will be put in the game and feel the rush and embrace of killing our enemy. We will be able to play multiplayer with millions at a time. We won't need to go to Wal-Mart to buy a headset for $20.00, we will be able to talk to people without having to talk to that weird, emo, freak at the check out stand. We will bend the game to our will! (Especially in the most recent Fable game. Holy sh*t, killing made me a poet.) |:=) Seriously though, just imagine life in the eyes of Niko Bellic, or The Boss, or even Master Chief. It would be a phenomonon that would sweep Earth by storm.

Whenever I think of the future of gaming I am always reminded of the //hack. series as well as the Holo-Decks in Star Trek. I can't even begin to imagine how far we are going to go when it comes to digital entertainment.

I predict that eventually, once we learn all we can about the human brain games will be directly linked to our consciousness and it will be like a second life, literally. But that's decades in the future.

Graphics. How real can a game look? Facial expressions, environment detail, smooth textures, etc. etc.

That's how I gauge the future, by graphics. When games can blur the line between watching television and playing television if ya catch my drift.

I think we've already come far enough in terms of graphics. It's already decent when I'm fooling other people into thinking that I'm watching a real football match rather than just playing FIFA confused.gif. Either that or my parents need their eyes checked. It's scary to think how much improved it can and will get.

The aspect of this entire question that interests me the most is how we'll view games of today in the future. "Oh yeah.. I remember back in the day we had wireless controllers lololol it was so dumb"

I bet Nintendo's got something huge backed up for next gen, which is probably why they are saving money now by making a low-graphics console with A LOT of third party games.

Also:

modern masterpiece games such as Fallout 3

I DISAGREE!

I think the future of the game graphics are human!

This may sound weird, but would everyone here prefer a game that looks computerized rather than something where everything looked real?

I dont think VR is ever gonna happen, frankly I am glad.

I can see some games getting more graphically enhanced but I look forward to different games. Ones that flow with creativity and don't follow the bland grey realistic template. No more bald space marines or crappy yearly updates please.

I hope the gaming industry never relies to much on downloadable content. I bought R* Table Tennis for £3, on Xbox Live it's £20. Having a real copy of a game is the best for me. I have a guilty pleasure of manual sniffing, I cant get my kicks sniffing the tv with a jpeg displayed on it.

I think graphics will make games look exactly like the real world. Computers get bigger and smaller at the same time so games will hold 50x the amount of memory it can today and consoles will be very small.

I read a article today saying how they might be able to make a CD that can hold upto 400,000 songs. The future is a lot sooner than we think. Think of it this way, the worlds population has gorwn by billions over the past 75 years. The same thing will happen totechnology, it will rapidly advance. But that's only if we allow it too.

Personally, I'm more interested in advancements of AI. The ability for the enemies to actually "think" and react accordingly, etc.

400000 songs, about 1 TB if you use standard MP3 format at 3 MB per file, it is impressive but Read-only devices are things of the past. Soon there will be small memory sticks that will store even more and those are rewriteable and faster. I seriously doubt that the movie industry will invest in a new format anytime soon, nor do I believe the gaming industry will do. The music industry has absolutely no need for bigger discs, who the hell will release a disc with 400,000 songs? On PC BD haven't really kicked in yet, the main problem is that BD drive is still way to expensive, but also there is a lack of need for it on PC so why do we need even bigger drives now? PC games might move to BD soon but there has been no indications of it doing so, but games has started to come on multi DVD releases and that was the first step in moving from CD to DVD on PC.

For gaming future, I do believe console will die(I'm serious). Well if not die they will be much more like PC that is connected to the TV. PC's connected to the TV is more common now than ever and it is growing rapidly so why have a limited console that can do something when you can have a PC that can do it all.

+1 except for the part about consoles - you have it backwards (in my opinionnnn). They will be more like PC in the web sense, but "bing isnt a search engine" for a reason wink.gif (same reason they give facebook (LOCAL CONNECTIONS FOR PEERS) instead of a real web browser (WORLDWIDE connection of humanity) PC makers are Actively trying to kill the PC using consoles. Here is a rundown of some key points and how they manipulate us under their breath, knowing that 1 in a family of 5 being computer savvy and the rest being space-book-tards is doomed against them when they say "you can just play your games on the set-top-box!"

A: FORCING you to play with only the xbox controller until you like it

B: Opening it up to so-called “casual gamers” by giving dumb games and watering down YOUR gamer voice with idiots

There are more points at the source (me). I hope that everyone can take it with a grain of salt but be open minded, I wrote it to inform or at least warn. Thank you for your consideration.

I agree. I'm very interested in the VR aspect of future games. We have the graphics we always wanted. The graphics from here on won't be that amazing until 8-10 years from now.

Ok back to VR, Imagine playing any GTA game like this, it would be amazing. The technology is here, it has been for over 30+ years but it has always been utilize by the US Military. Now is when it becoming more common and many independent Game Developers are playing and experimenting with it. All it takes is one Developer to put out a kickass VR game and boom it will spread like wild flower. Take a look at this video and imagine what Game Developers can do now if they wanted. This demonstrates the potential and future of VR.

Within the next year or two sony will be releasing a proper 3D upgrade for ALL it's games on the PS3 via software. To begin with there will be glasses, but new TV's are bening developed that create a natural 3D image. Pretty amazing stuff.

To be honest, I can't see any major developments coming over the next 10 years, aside from ridiculously detailed graphics and physics systems, major breakthroughs, like virtual reality seem a long way off being feasible. Definietly within our lifetime though.

I agree that MS is trying to kill PC Gaming with it's XBOX, but I don't think they will succeed in the long run. If PC gaming is going do die they have to make console more appealing to the PC gamers, thats means support mouse/keyboard, and be a more open platform with the ability to ad 3rd party software without MS/sony approval. In other words they have to move more towards PC's freedom. The PC gamer user base is still way to large to ignore by the industry.

I actually see a lot of my hopes and dreams about video games being made true during my life. I remember always thinking it would be cool if there was a camera that records your moves, and now we have that. It's moving much faster than we think. Most of the stuff that's gonna be released in maybe 5-10 years is already being made and tested, they just don't want to release it into the public yet. They want to make all the profit they can from their current machines and then move on.

Easy. Full sensiual virtual reality like the martix only you don't die if you "fail". But that's far away like 2050.
