Are you playing GTA 4 on your mac using bootcamp? (bootcamp is really the only way and it can be done, and it can be done, just if you didn't know.) I am. and it plays quite smoothly.

Interesting..

Have any benchmarks? And what are your system specifications?

i haven't done any benchmarks. i just adjust the setting until the game plays smooth.

I have 2 ghz processor

9400 m nvidia GeForce

2.7 GB RAM (really 4 but i'm running 32 bit OS)

and in the graphics settings in the game, my max is 488 for resources, but i have it at 340.

But i'd say it looks good. it looks like how it does for xbox 360, only less fps.

with my settings i'd say i get around 23-30 fps

I'd like to get GTAIV for my IMac but I don't want to go out and buy a $200 Windows XP disk just for a $60 game. I'm also afraid that my Mac will be exposed to viruses and malicious software, if I ever decided to install Windows on my Mac.

Your mac is way more vulnerable than a PC, you just happen to have such a small user base that 'no one' is hacking viruses up for it yet on a meaningful level, give it time, the new popularity of those things is putting you in the sights tounge.gif

Just a side note about it, there is nothing "safer" about a mac, it just doesn't threaten free-software like Windows does... yet...

Macs are way less secure than Windows PCs

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/...less-secure.ars

http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/unlo..._security_risks

A PC made for people who can't fix it when it doesn't work and need it to "just work"? The second link's intro caption explains.

And later in the article:

Mac OS X’s Unix underpinnings and the lack of viruses on the platform relative to those that affect Windows lead many Mac users to believe that they are immune just because they use a Mac. The notion of catching a computer virus seems foreign to many Mac users, while Windows users have been dealing with the threat for over
a decade.

However, any discussion of computer security that limits itself to viruses is shortsighted. The real threat to Mac users—right now—is not virulent code. It’s the security holes in applications or the operating system, known and unknown, that attackers could try to exploit. True, such exploits are not technically viruses, but that doesn’t make them good for you or your Mac.

you are right, but that is not the entire answer. macs aren't nearly as targeted as pc's, but it is also harder to create effective viruses for mac, because of their UNIX foundation. But you can only get viruses anyway from opening malicious software or zip or rar files. so you can pretty much easily avoid viruses, on any OS, when you know exactly what you are doing.

But windows pcs aren't way more secure than macs, unless you count the software that you must buy for large amounts of $$. It's all about the 3rd party software when it comes to a pc more secure than a mac. secure, safer, whatever.

yea, it's like, no one is really targeting that yet, i have theories that mac is actually waiting to take hold BIG in the market so that they can be targeted, which will inherently put Unix at risk. The security industry money alone is worth it imo.

But yea, indeed, it is about security flaws elsewhere, and you're right pretty much everything you said too (I can't speak for it all, but it looks spot on to me with all I've read on the subject, I almost switched much but not knowing how to know if I was truly secure or not actually scared me out of it tounge.gif)

Anyway, sorry for sort of bringing the topic in a different direction slightly, even tho it is useful info perhaps for mac users who maybe will go do some research (also, if someone has tips for someone like me who isn't sure how to be sure, or for people who have macs but might not know about the non-viral kind of security risks, please post, because one day I would like to have a nice macbook, cheers if it's not too much, cheers either way)

chicken! it's not the computer that gives you it, it depends on what websites and programs you use. do never use anything that maybe is a virus or a tracingsoftware. windows is for the real users. mac is for people who want it easy to use a computer.

If you enjoy overpaying for the same hardware then macs are just for you!

If you enjoy being smug and like telling everyone about how awesome yet expensive your computer is, mac is for you!!

If you enjoy sitting in coffee shop and trying to have people notice that you are very busy on your computer, then mac is for you!!!

If you enjoy being ignorant and deny to admit the fact that macs are very restricted and since its pointless to write a virus for them because most mac users already are suffering from the incompetent OS then mac is for you!!!!

Damn. No love for the Mac?

Use PC at home, Mac at work. Mac is reliable -- rarely crashes.

Anyway, back to thread: Seconded on posting the benchmarks.

Buy a PC. Macs are for morons that don't know anything about computer science. I built my rig myself. It's cheap AND powerful. I would never buy a comp in a store as I want full control of every aspect of it and don't want anybody touching it except me. And if a game doesn't run well enough, I simply change parts. wink.gif

Exactly.

In fact, I can't wait until Apple's market share increases. Guess why? I want the European Commision to f*uck Apple up like there's no tomorrow. First Micro$oft got its a*ss handed to it. Only recently - Intel. Now it's Apple's turn. When the European Commision a*ss rapes them for not allowing 3rd-party-hardware and forces to pay 1 billion fine, they'll quickly reassess their business model. Oh my, I just can't wait to see that! I wanna see the look on Steve Jobs' face when he suddenly realises: "F*ck, it seems Mac OS was so stable 'cause we only had one set of hardware to program it for. Oh no, I think I have to call Bill Gates and beg for advice." HA HA HA You'll get screwed so hard, my friend... just wait.

ok. the discussion is about booting up a windows OS using Bootcamp on a mac, not mac stereotypes and sort of true statements like that mac's hardware is expensive and outdated when it comes to the laptops but work perfect for everything but non-gaming because macs aren't meant for games because no one makes them for mac. but macs aren't very restrictive, but we're done with the debate.

v

Talk about what the whole discussion is supposed to be about, or get the f*ck out.

@Outoftimer: no. that is false. get your facts straight before you sound like, well, im not going to flame, but we're done with being off topic.

I had a mac book air. I got it as a gift. I began using it and in about 2 hours time i realized using OSx is like having your face being smacked by a dildo back and forth and you cant do anything about it. No dvd drive, one usb port, cant remove the battery, have to jump through some f*cking hoops to upgrade the RAM... f*ck that, i sold it on ebay.

All macs are just plain sad, overpriced, and plain sh*t on head retarded.

look, you people relax. i agree that the macbook air is pretty stupid but whatever. we aren't going to have a debate over macs and pcs. there is a topic for that, so go there. people have their reasons for buying a mac, and people have their reasons for buying a PC. it's all about personal preference. or for some people, whatever they can afford. if you don't have an on topic comment then leave.

Fine, let's sum up what this thread managed to produce so far.

Mac Troll came to the forum. He states he wants to play GTA IV so he installed XP on his Mac using Boot Camp. LOL People ask for benchmarks but are not given any. Everybody just laughs at the guy and tells him that running GTA IV on a Mac is the dumbest idea ever.

OP, one thing i cant cope and understand is that how can anyone play this resource raping game on a dual core processor not clocked more than 2,2GHz and on an interrogated, laptop designed 9400GT. Its obvious trolling because even at the lowest resolutions and lowest settings your frame rate would be crap.

ok. i did the benchmark test and the only thing that it tells me that i don't already know is the framerate, which averaged at 23 fps. not bad i would say. the game runs how i like. the quality after some adjustments to get such rates but still having a near HD resolution is a little less than xbox 360 quality.

and that video is likely cropped for the purpose of a video to make fun of mac users.

i'm not trolling. this topic is serious so quit treating it like a joke.

not xbox 360 settings. it looks close to xbox 360 quality. but just leave dude. this topic is for mac users.

EDIT: keep any comment that has to do with anything negative toward macs, to yourself.

I understand apple doesn't provide good gaming hardware as cheap as for PCs, so if you want to tell me anything like that, there is no need.

Macs are fashion accessories

But are the leading edge in Desktop Publishing, Music creation and HD Video editing. ANYONE that know anything about Macs would know that Quark Express is THE only reason to have a Mac. (and to look cool and impress all the girls....)

But for gaming, it's PC all the way.

Name a Quad Core Mac with a decent Graphics card??!?!

Price?!?!?!

You tend to pay a lot more through the....arse for a Mac and it's not as if you really do get what you pay for....unless you use it for what it is intended (Desktop Publishing, Media Creation and Music editing).

Before you Mac people call me a hater, I really do like Macs...but ONLY when they are used for what they are intended.

Call me a troll if you like, but Mac's are NOT intended to run GTA IV PC

John

you probably make the most sense out of all the other people who are non-mac. playing gta 4 on my mac works for me but if i was really going to get into gaming on a computer, i would buy a PC. Probably an Alienware machine. they sound really great.

well macs are pretty much just pcs anyway now that they even got intel cpus in them, so it's useless to create a separate thread, just post ur benches to the existing benchmark thread.

they're simply more expensive, look cool (supposedly) and designed for ppl who don't really understand what is hardware anyway. well, anyhoo.. i get 40 in benchmark and the fps in game still doesn't satisfy me.. now u tell me 20+ is ok.. whatever.
