SB-X
Does anyone know the reason for this? Does this happen to anyone else? When starting SA, it crashes before loading the main menu. From memory I realized that it happened last time installing the game whenever Audio was not checked in the installer. I don't have enough free disk space to include audio, so through trial and error I figured out that it's "audio/streams/aa" or the lack thereof causing the crash. Copying only that file from the DVD allows the game to start. It may even work with an empty aa file, havn't tested yet. This happens even after a clean reinstall. It might have happened before with the patch, but I'm just using 2.0 now. (is there a newer patch?)
Girish
What patch are you talking about? The 2.0 is not a patch. It's the version of the game that is available in stores, currently. The only patch available is the v1.01 (no more hot coffee patch) which only works with v1 copies of the game.
radioman
If you don't have enough space on your C drive for a "full" install, then install the game on an External Hard drive that does have enough space for a "full" install. If i'm not mistaken, if you move files from the disc, you will get crashes, since the game cannot find the files needed to start the game.?-not sure about this one, but maybe somebody can clarify on this.? That's about your only choice, other than deleting non-used/old programs and files on your C drive to make room for the install. As Girish said, the 1.01 patch is only for V1 games, and there is no patch for V2 games. The only reason the patch came out, to my knowledge, was due to the "hot coffee" situation, that was fixed with V2, but needed a patch to fix on V1. SB-X
I didn't say 2.0 is a patch, I said I'm using 2.0 this time instead of 1.0+any patches (didn't know what was available). Last time I had GTA installed it was the old version and pretty sure the same problem occurred. Guess they never released any fixes for all the bugs people found? I already know how to manage free disk space if necessary, I just didn't want to bother. But thanks for the suggestion. Game works fine just copying the audio over from the DVD. Fortunately the needed file (AA) is only 4MB. So in short nobody knows why the non-full install crashes, why it doesn't just work as expected? EDIT: Oops, you also need (at least) AMBIENT and CUTSCENES for the.. cutscenes, to avoid crashing. Heh. Edited September 28, 2009 by SB-X
