anyhow..

another way to enable 4 gigs on 32 win is creating a ramdisk and putting ur pagefile on that..

yes u can create a ramdisk of the portion not used by the os w/ many utilities.. this is what i'd do if i'd go back to 32 os at some point.

What was the bold for?

I already stated that I lowered the view distance on Win7 and it still showed worse results, jesus. confused.gif

ah, k.. [i didn't read thoroughly and was half asleep]

i've sometimes gotten better benchmarks w/ some specific higher settings compared to lower settings, but since u tried, ok.

for me tho, xp was quite equal in results w/ win 7..

Just thought I'd add, although there's a 100% chance that someone has said this before.

GTA 4 runs as a 32 bit app says my task manager. confused.gif

This could be the cause on why my gta4 has ran slower on Win7 64 bit? I should try the other games that had a decrease in FPS or games that run as 32 bit and compare them to the 32 bit OS I have to see if there is any difference in FPS.

Also the first twenty seconds I start gta4 there seems to be a sh*t load of stuttering whenever I move the mouse around, ehh maybe I should do another defrag.

Explain to me then as to why someone with 2 GB RAM should switch over to a 64-bit OS?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/64-bit#Pros_and_cons

There are many other reasons to use a 64bit OS that have nothing to do with RAM, but quite a few of them aren't really related to the "64bit vs 32bit" argument at all, so much as being specific to 32bit vs 64bit Windows OSes.

PAE tends to be hit or miss for a few reasons. You can run into compatibility problems, especially with (but not limited to) drivers that are "dodgy", for lack of a better term. It can also end up being a waste of time depending on the amount of RAM you're talking about, as PAE adds a layer of translation which can have a negative effect on performance. There are also many processes which will get no increase in performance with PAE.

A 64bit process can be much larger in size than a 32bit version that does the same thing, which can hurt its performance (though rarely and slightly) compared to its 32bit version. Just as PAE can actually hurt performance, running a 32bit process in a 64bit version of Windows means translation via wow64, that can also hurt performance.

It's also not as simple as "64bit r moar ram".

Take a specific process running on a 32bit Windows system with 3.?GB, the same process running on a 32bit Windows system with 4GB and PAE enabled, and that same process running on a 64bit Windows system with 4-5GB. In the end the one that performs the best depends on the specific process, not just which system has access to more RAM. That said, I'd still probably bet on the latter. If a process has a version that is 64bit that would probably be the one I'd bet on, but IV runs 32bit anyway, so that's moot.

While I wouldn't advise someone with 2GB of RAM to switch from XP to Vista or 7, I wouldn't advise anyone, anywhere to switch to XP 64 at this point, for many reasons, but mostly because of compatibility.

Some comparisons of 64bit Windows OSes.

A google search would probably bring up some pages much more useful to you than anything said here.

Anyway, all of that (like a few of the posts in here) are about 64bit/32bit, but aren't really about your question at all.

If you're thinking of switching to 64bit just to get better performance out of IV, then I'd advise against it. If you were getting more RAM that would be one thing, if you had 4GB of RAM and a 1GB videocard that would be a completely different thing, but with 2GB of RAM I doubt the switch will give you any noticeable improvement.

My question was more GTA IV oriented, Sweets. Of course, I'm aware of the pros and cons of a 64-bit OS but the fact being that GTA IV isn't specifically coded for 64-bit, there is absolutely no advantage in switching over to a 64-bit OS. The only real advantage in this case, as said several times before, is if you have more than 3 GB RAM. And that is what we're both agreeing on, basically. tounge.gif

Who's with me for filing a class action lawsuit against R* for lieing about 64bit optimization? anuj_cop.gif

rdbx1234 pointed out that GTAIV runs as a 32 bit process. I forgot about that. So how could it be optimized for 64 bit if its 32 bitt? That's the smoking gun right there. Even the most computer illiterate juror would understand that. Even a public defender lawyer could win this case. Any law students here? Even you could win this case, and it would put on the map. You could skip being a public defender and go straight to being an evil insurance company lawyer or Johnny Cochran.

I'm only half serious about this, but it seems to be an open and shut case.

It's not that easy, my friend. Rockstar have been very careful about what they have put on the box. It says 'enhanced' for 64-bit, not 'optimised for'. This does not necessarily mean that the game was coded to run better on 64-bit systems or was coded specifically for 64-bit systems. If the game does not run better on your 64-bit system, Rockstar will most probably blame your hardware in one way or the other. Even a person with an Intel i7, 12 GB RAM and a HD 5870 wouldn't win this case because of the diplomatic 'enhanced' comment.

i beg to differ, we can sue... because in what way is it enhanced? ive been testing and testing and testing....and though i find it runs better in 64 bit in my experience (thats an os thing, not the game itself) i see no differences in the game at all between 32 and 64 bit for this game. so to have any enhancements or even optimizations or anything it would either have to have a 64 bit exe, or at least a 64 bit wrapper/ handler... i spoke to my wife about this (shes a trial lawyer) and even though this is not her forte, all that has to be proven is there is no difference with the game on either platform and it is labled misleading advertising.

so yeah id sue rockstar over this, anyone alse want in?

and girishb, i respect you a great deal, but american law is very different and to sue someone these days is very easy.

You can sue but you'll most likely lose. There might be some hidden code in the game files that probably makes the game run better (although it's negligible) on 64-bit systems. We don't know if any such code exists but R* could use that as evidence to point out that their statement of the game being enhanced for 64-bit is true. Besides, you yourself said that the game runs better on a 64-bit OS. Again, that's a point to Rockstar. They could probably bring their own 32-bit and 64-bit systems and show the court the difference in performance, in which case, once again their 'enhanced for 64-bit' statement becomes valid. Don't you think R* would have thought this over before putting that enhanced crap on the game box? Surely, they must have some way to prove it in case of any legal issue or they wouldn't have risked it.

In short, suing them for this would be pointless and a waste of your own time. If you still wish to sue them, it's your choice. I can only wish you good luck.
