JOSEPH X
INFO: Yakuza 4 is a PS3 excusive, It is an open world crime drama in the vein of GTA. Players take control of fou characters whose stories intertwine. At this moment in time it is unconfirmed as to whether it will see an english language version. IGN eyes-on preview US, September 26, 2009 - It seems every once in a while, a news story will pop up here either confirming that Yakuza 4 is totally coming to the United States or that there's no way in hell Yakuza 4 is coming to the United States. After seeing the behind-closed-doors TGS presentation, SEGA is the dumbest company on the face of the planet if it doesn't bring this game to the United States. If you're looking for the story of Yakuza 4, you're in the wrong place. The 15-minute video montage I watched for it today was completely in Japanese, but it did drive home enough of the game's theme, action, and depth to tell you this is the kind of game that will make me learn Japanese if it doesn't come here. Still, keep in mind that I don't know exact details so some of the assumptions below are bound to be wrong. Shown mostly in cutscenes, the presentation introduced me to four playable characters -- a big ol' burly dude, a guy wearing a purple jacket, a kid in a tie who seems to be a young police officer, and the white suit wearing guy you've probably seen before. The purple-clad dude seems to be a detective trying to help a woman in a trench coat, the cop kid is just out for justice, the white suit guy appears to be the leader, and the burly man is on a quest for revenge. Somehow, all of these stories intersect for the game. The burly guy's story seems to be the most interesting. There's a scene of him overlooking the city and talking to another guy; it looks like he's talking about revenge, and that appears to be driven home by the bag of handguns the other guy gives him. Jump to a ramen shop, and the burly guy walks in loaded with them there guns -- he's got two in his waistband, two in his hands, some tucked in his jacket, and one in his mouth. Once inside the shop, you can see the rage in his eyes and he lifts the gun and begins unloading. The camera cuts to his point of view as all the people in ramen shop flip out. Then the camera turns to an Old Boy-esque perspective where we're seeing him make his way into the shop from the side so he comes from one side of the screen and the enemies come from another. One guy tries to grab the gun, the burly guy lifts his other hand, and pops the grabbing guy in the gut. It's a graphic, slow motion move that was simply awesome. Now, it's worth pointing out here that these scenes seem to be incredibly well done. The action is fluid and looks like a movie at some points in terms of how lifelike the characters are. Sure, there are some angles that let us look in their mouths and that kind pulls you out of the experience, but for the most part I was totally wrapped up in these movies… movies that I couldn't even understand. There's even really well done sound for footsteps and rain. Eventually, the video got to some of the brawling in-game action, and that looks just as sweet. There were people getting kicked in the balls before catching a backwards spin kick to the head, big old combos that ended with guys spraying fountains of blood out of their mouths, and even the big guy swinging a motorcycle as a weapon. If the story and its movie-like presentation weren't getting me going, the fact that this game looks like it had GTA IV beat in stuff to do in an open world does. There was a montage of restaurants you can eat in, items in local shops you can buy, dates you can go on, women you can dress, numbers you can get, and mini-games you can play. I saw darts, grab-claw games, trivia, and ping pong that ended with the ball whacking a scantily clad woman in the chest. Speaking of chests, there's a homerun game where your shots illuminate squares of a board that show a woman in a bathing suit. Seriously, I wish I had studied Japanese in college just so I could tell you more about Yakuza 4. It looks great and SEGA needs to do whatever needs to be done to make sure we play it in English one day. ..editing this topic now, more info coming Edited September 26, 2009 by II J0SePh X II
Don Garcia
Uh, wow, I was oblivious to the fact that a Yakuza 2 and 3 even existed. I beat the first one though, really enjoyed it. Fun beat 'em up with some cool side sh*t thrown in like random events and mini-games.
JOSEPH X
Yakuza 3 is also a PS3 exclusive and is confirmed as coming to the west Source TRAILER for Yakuza
Creed Bratton
I played Yakuza 1 on PS2 and it was amazing. I wanted to play Yakuza 2 but as far as I know it was never released in Europe. Shame really. Kazuma is probably the most underrated game character ever. It's probably because of the exclusiveness to PS3 and Japan. They should really try to release the game on all major platforms everywhere in the world simultaneously. I can say these games make PS3 well worth buying. It's a great exclusive. Don Garcia
I just now watched the trailer in the OP. WOW. Those are some impressive graphics. And even though little gameplay was shown, I know I really want to play it. So Yakuza 2 and 3, were those even produced in English? I don't remember hearing about 'em ever. So 3 is coming? And what of 2? Sorry for being slow.
Carnage1120
Never heard of it...Is this like the Asian version of the "Driver" series? Driv3r had kickass car destruction EDIT: For a last gen game
Don Garcia
Not, not Driver. There is no driving, far as I know. You might label it a "GTA Clone", I wouldn't.
AndyGanteks
I played the first Yakuza, always wanted to play Yakuza 2, and i heard some pirates actually transtaled it and make an english version. As far as i know, Yakuza 3 english version will be released in the time when Y4 is released in Japan. Y3 should be set in some old age if i remember it. Also,, in the trailer in the first post, isn't that building explosion, and that money falling from it from the first Yakuza?
Creed Bratton
Also,, in the trailer in the first post, isn't that building explosion, and that money falling from it from the first Yakuza? Indeed it is. Maybe it's a flashback in the story or something like that. Remember The Purgatory? I loved those underground fights
Don Garcia
The first Yakuza's ending was so beast, haha. You and the other dude ripping off your shirts and going apesh*t on each other around the penthouse. I really liked the game. The baseball was fun... saintdave
They (SEGA) confirmed that Yakuza 4 will be coming to north America (and hopefully Europe) in Spring 2011. Article link here.
CryptReaperDorian
Damn, the Yakuza games are very story driven. While GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption have great storylines, they are definately not as emotion packed as the Yakuza games and let alone MGS4. Yakuza 3's ending almost made me cry, and that's quite a difficult thing for me to do. Also, the cutscenes are amazing! I don't know what GameInformer was thinking when they gave Yakuza 3 a 6.5 or something like that.
junkpile
good to see there's a topic about this great game. i finished YAKUZA a couple of weeks ago. it was simply fantastic. and you could see some ideas rockstar borrowed from it. however, even though the map is really small, you always walk by foot (except the car chase), the storyline and town is impressing. it appears to be more vivid than liberty city. you have lots of side missions like in RDR. many random fights (they can be repetetive and boring), this is something gta 4 lacks. i also like the idea of beating up your opponent. i'm not a martial arts or beat'em up-fanatic, but i don't want to shot anyone who crosses my way. in gta 4, some guys i'd rather knock out than kill them. bad news for me, good news for all zombie fans: yakuza will have a spin off including a zombie attack.
