SWEETSAPRIK
Avira AntiVir is the best free antivirus imho. ^This. http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html For free firewalls there are a few, but it goes by personal experience. Zonealarm, comodo, outpost, sygate, etc. Personally I always used Zonealarm before I got Vista, and even after trying all the other free ones I still preferred it. My ISP offers an av/firewall/antispam/etc suite, but it's CA which I don't care for, and it's a suite, which I hate. PяopagaиdaIиc.

SWEETSAPRIK
On XP I use Avira and Zonealarm, on Vista(64) I use Avira and Windows Firewall. I do not suggest trusting Windows Firewall if you're still on XP, as it's basically just an on/off checkbox with no real control other than that, and it can't block outgoing connections. It's better than nothing, but not by much. PяopagaиdaIиc.

Pico
hm, then I've got nothing sorry lol. I've always gotten anti-virus through my ISP Hahah, oh wow. And NO, DO NOT use Norton. First of all, like he said it's just a 30 day trial. So in 30 days it stops working then you pay for it... and it's bloated and sh*tty. Use Avira or AVG, I prefer Avira. Again with the people coming into tech chat out of no where with bad advice...
Ryan
I've had nothing but problems with Norton. On my previous computer, I installed Norton and it made the whole computer go to sh*t. MSN wouldn't work, it wouldn't let me access the internet, wouldn't let me play certain games, and whole bunch of other annoying inconveniences. After that incident with Norton, I installed AVG and I haven't had a single problem on my previous computer or this one. As long as you don't need an anti-virus program that does tricks or sings, AVG is definitely worth considering. Girish
Again with the people coming into tech chat out of no where with bad advice... I wouldn't blame him. He probably hasn't heard of any other AVs. Prior to 2006, when I didn't have internet at home, I used to think McAfee was the best anti-virus out there. It was only when I found out about the existence of other awesome AVs like Avira, AVG, Kaspersky that I realized how sh*tty McAfee was. I have also noticed that Norton and McAfee take up way too much memory than any other AVs; almost about 50-60 MB. I have no idea what it requires so much memory for. Kimd41
I think the best antivirus out there is Nod32, its light and good. It's not free, but you can get a trial of that. Actually, I've found Norton is the worst antivirus I ever used. Computer started loading slow, programs not opening, etc...

Fozzy Fozborne
Yep AVG has protected my computers for over 3 years now without a single virus or spyware coming through. Norton and Mcaffee always slowed my computers down to a crawl, Mcaffee being especially bad.
Pico
the only antivirus i have ever used is norton See, there's your problem. Try some of the other anti-viruses mentioned in this topic and you'll realize how much better they're than Norton. And another problem is thinking that memory is storage space. Memory = RAM. Random Access Memory. This is data kept for running applications. Programs like Norton take up more than other AVs. And they just don't work as good, don't detect as much. Storage space = hard drive space. This is what stores passwords. Not trying to be a dick, it's just that not knowing the difference shows the level of technical skills/knowledge. Not the best idea to take advice from some one who doesn't know the difference. Reminds me of the pic of a facebook wall, were the guy says he's removing his facebook because it's taking up too much memory and how it "runs out fast"... I'll try and post it when I can. Dude seriously, if you're going to spend money, get the Kaspersky Internet Security Suite. THE BEST security suite of all time! When your Norton subscription runs out, give Kaspersky a shot. You won't be disappointed at all. And btw, I have ran all the AVs and security suites mentioned in this topic, so I know what I'm saying and I ain't fooling around. Pico
I actually just read something about Kapersky having a lower detection rate than Norton, but I don't know how reliable the source was. The tech guy at my office just recommend an AV that was needed a subscription, but I can't recall what it was exactly. All I remember is it used two AVs at once, I believe one was Avast!. I'll try and ask him again which one it was, I need to recommend it to some one who's computer I just fixed because she, for some reason, feels free AVs aren't enough. Which I find funny... combine a free AV with common sense and you're fine. I haven't had trouble with any viruses for a long time and I only use Avira. And that detects things a lot, saved my ass a few times. @mincemate003, johnathon956 didn't know, as evident when he said "...all the memory it uses is for filling in passwords..." Girish
I actually just read something about Kapersky having a lower detection rate than Norton, but I don't know how reliable the source was. Was that the anti-virus or the security suite? Because I'm running the Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2010 and trust me, it does not let a single damn thing get into my computer. It constantly monitors and scans my PC activity too. Every single file/application is scanned before I open it. And trust me, my friends bring over some nasty viruses and trojans via pen drives but Kaspersky always cleans them all. Never has it told me that it was unable to disinfect a certain type of virus which is pretty impressive since I've been using it for almost a year now. Also, it updates every day because it always keeps adding new definitions to the virus database keeping me protected from every new virus out there. I'm not sure how good the Kaspersky Anti-Virus is though. But if the Internet Security Suite is this good, then the AV should be equally good too. Girish
i dont know how far it is true about kasperskybut my friend said that its server is hacked then how can it protect ur system from hacker and viruses if it cannot able 2 protect itself It was no big deal. It was just the software on one of their servers that was hacked into. It was quite a few months back though and Kaspersky have since multiplied their server security many times. Also, you have to know that viruses and hacking is a different thing. If some talented hacker wanted to hack into your system, no anti-virus will be able to prevent it. That is the same for every web server out there. Any server can be hacked into; just the level of difficulty varies. This is why you should always update your anti-virus but it does not guarantee a fool-proof protection against dedicated hackers. But hackers don't generally target personal PCs, so you're safe. 3niX
Well... According to reviews/benchmarks NOD 32 and Avast! (which I have on my home PC and the PC I have at the university) are the best ones when it comes down to protection. I have used Kaspersky, Norton, F-Secure, NOD 32 (and obviously Avast! too) and I can safely say that they really are the best of the best. NOD 32 might be a bit more intrusive at times but neither hogs too much resources and both detection rates are highest. NOD 32 is only available as a free demo (30 days) but Avast! is completely free (you just have to register your copy).
