Skyline35
Don't leave it without description and what you like about that movie. "Van Helsing" A definite movie for action-horror fans. The main character is Hugh Jackman, who I would count as one of my favourite actors. You just can't stay off that movie, it's just really good. Van Helsing is in the world to rid all evil, even if not everyone agrees with him. The Vatican send the monster hunter and his ally, Carl to Transylvania. They have been sent to this land to stop the powerful Count Dracula. Whilst, here they join forces with a Gypsy Princess called Anna Valerious, who is determined to end an ancient curse on her family, by destroying the vampire. dxk
Constantine - Man, I loved it. Yes they changed some stuff from the novel, but Reeves was just too good. Best part- the fact that a human shows lucifier the finger!
Vanilla Shake
"Thank You For Smoking". Just all around a brilliant film. TC718 / <629 / CF5
Fnorg
Reeves was just too good Does not compute. I can't think of a single thing to say, since we all have different tastes. Personally I though Van Helsing was incredibly mediocre and Constantine was worthless.
trip
Fantastic Planet Aside from the fantastic art work, this film will really make you think about social positions, and human behavior. It's about a race of 'well to do' beings that keep humans as pets. Trust me - that's not all. Tsar_Smirnoff
"Session 9" directed and written by Brad Anderson comes to mind...definitely if you like psychological horror and not slasher/"boo!" horror movies. If you haven't seen "28 Days Later" I suggest picking that up as well....most realistic zombie movie I thought(although they're not technically zombies). My suggestion for the thread is Brazil - an absolutely incredible film, and quite possibly the best film Gilliam has ever made, or will ever make. trip
I second Otter's suggestion of Brazil...great movie. Fantastic Planet had a weird life. I saw it on screen in a little art theater, then was able to rent the VHS - then it disappeared forever. The good news is it was just released on DVD for the 25th anniversary. I was able to rent it from nextflix. My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens

Slamman
Made a topic for The Emerald Forest and I also love the movie Nomads with Pierce Brosnan, long before Bond, with a score by Ted Nugent, directed my John McTeirnan!!! WIN, and add to that Mary Woronov and Adam Ant to the cast
dxk
....love the movie Nomads with Pierce Brosnan, long before Bond, ... You mean the one where he gets stranded with a guy from a tribe? I love that one, Brosnan tells him that his name is "master" and then feels guilty.(Then reads bible)

iamanevilbastard
V for Vendetta. Its an epic. It mixes a dark atmosphere with some light hearted comedy as well. Fight Club. An awesome plot twist. The ultimate guy movie. Superbad. Hilarious. The second time i watched it, i knew what was coming and laughed at the main character driving his car at the start of the film. Yeah. Good times. Die Hard. Funny action movie. The best Christmas movie I've seen. Kill Bill 1&2-especially if you're a guy. Catch my meaning? The-King
Mirror Mask, an amazing film with an incredible art style, interesting plot and engaging characters. darthYENIK
I'm guessing you mean semi under the radar type movies. Well I would suggest Monster Squad then. This is how kids movies should be. Kids would kick ass when adults couldn't, and do so using language that all kicks use. Especially the word "nards". blitsie
The Shawshank Redemption - Its just a great movie with a few touching scenes. Its also got Morgan Freeman in it. Me,myself and Irene - Its kinda twisted, but its got Jim Carrey and a lot of funny moments Titan AE - Its a good animation movie (not freaky anime) that's not to kiddish but also not too serious. I was going to suggest the english dubbed version for the non-french speaking folks. It's not even noticeable that it is dubbed. Totally glad you got a copy. FullMetal
The Big Lebowski Burn After Reading Both movies by the Coen brothers... I only had seen No Country For Old Men before (which was also a masterpiece). But after seeing these two movies I realised even more how brilliant these guys are. I feel ashamed of not having seen The Big Lebowski before. And Burn After Reading is a MUST SEE.
Qumulys
I'd put in my vote for 'Hero', although some may say its a propoganda film, I think they miss the point which I believe is to create a truely breathtaking cinamatographers wet dream. If you dig crouching tiger, and beautiful art this is a must see film for me.
Toke
Dog Soldiers. Small squad of English soldiers take on werewolves in the woods. The cast is superb. Acting and "special effects" are not as bad as one might think considering the low budget this movie likely had. Only complaint about it that I had was the english accents were often so thick that I could not understand some things that were said.
Jean Capel
I'd like to second some of the recommendations here, most notably Titan AE for being an awesome kid's film and showing that you don't have to sugarcoat it or deal with 'silly' things when you make a film aimed at children. Also, I watched Session 9 on recommendation of another member in this thread, and I must concur that it is one of the better horror films of the last decade. It rarely uses gore and only does so when needed and effective, rather then gratuitously. It plays off of the psychological problems of the characters and develops them well, as well as having multiple interpretations to the ending rather then being strictly linear as most 'horror' films are these days. I especially liked the way Anderson incorporated basic psychology into the fear of the movie, repetitive sounds, altered voices, dialogue and tone of voice, basic fears such as Nyctophobia. Stress and occupation of the characters is also used effectively, as well as classic human drama that we can all relate to being one of the primary fear factors. I'd also recommend Memento, an awesome thriller with a great plot twist and great actors. The Machinist, same as above. American History X, indescribably awesome. A must see for all film fans. Suicide Kings - Christopher Walken, Sean Patrick Flannery, Mobster kidnapping, and snappy/intelligent dialogue. What more could you ask for? Oh yea... "They cut your f*ckin' finger off? f*ckin' sick f*cks, it's all this f*ckin' rap sh*t isn't it?"
