ryuclan
Ok I'm really looking for software to help me write my music. I've heard tale of a music writing software where you can play into a microphone and the software writes the music automatically. If anyone could tell me the name of this software and a price that would be much appreciated. Also if there is any better software I would like to hear about it. I haven't really written much music because I had no reason to, but now I'm thinking about composing my own stuff (or our own stuff). Just so you know I play Alto Sax, B(flat) clarinet), Guitar, Electric Bass, Drums, a little trumpet (or coronet), and working on a few other instruments. Me and a couple friends are trying to start a little jazz thing and this software would help a bit.
SIKKS66
Try GuitarPro5. You can compose stuff in that (almost any instrument can be used). You have to know how to use and read tablature, however.
ryuclan
That's not a problem and thanks. I knew there wouldn't be many replies to this but thanks.
Canoxa
Jesus f*ck, not Guitar Pro. It's godawful for even for guitar tabs, let alone dealing with other instruments. What you are talking about is done by MIDI. As far as I'm aware, no software does audio recognition. My favourite notation software is Sibelius. Though it's so good, I end up using Finale for the smaller things. For the real small things, you've got Finale Notepad, which is freeware. You could also google around for more obscure, and potentially free, good notation programs. May I ask you what kind of jazz you'll be experimenting with? Vive La France
I'd move this to Tech chat... I personally use FL Studio 9. Try it. It works great.
livejoker
I'd move this to Tech chat... I personally use FL Studio 9. Try it. It works great. Isn't FL more for techno music? I've tried out the demo and I only got drums (techno-based drums). So, not sure if it plays guitar but you must know more than I do.

I mean, clearly the other instruments are just lame MIDI effects, and even the guitars are just on the same key as a piano. However, I don't see the problem with it other than it's got kind of crappy interface. QUOTE (K^2) ...not only is it legal for you to go around with a concealed penis, it requires absolutely no registration!

I still use it occasionally because normal tabs lack rhythm. I remember downloading stuff off UG and ending up hating the notation. After trying to tab some things of my own, I understood why. Bottom line, I for a rock band setup, guitars, bass, drums, wouldn't be too bad. He'll be handling a different kind of group, for which GuitarPro is absolutely terrible. I actually have Finale Notepad, it comes with the EE books people buy for instruments. I was thinking of trying something like the Hidden Beach albums. I've loved their music for a while and always wanted to play jazz anyway. For the most part we're mainly gonna do Jazz covers of songs we like. Depending on if we can find the guy we may have someone playing violin. I'll have to look into it more, I'm sure there was some software that did that, but maybe it was used with MIDI. It was a long time ago when I saw the guy do it. @Vive La France: I want to WRITE my own music. Also I can never figure out FL Studios anyway. Ascer
Music writing software works with MIDI signals, so you need a MIDI instrument to record score into computer. If you play all those instruments you shouldn't have problems with writing sheet music with a pencil. If you want to record your songs (audio, not midi score) you should buy a microphone, an audio interface, and use a software like Nuendo or Pro Tools, they are both professional softwares that are used in music industry to record, arrange, mix and master songs. Then it's up to you to learn audio mixing and mastering techniques.
Superb
I'd move this to Tech chat... I personally use FL Studio 9. Try it. It works great. +1 - FL Studio is great, you can use your own samples, VST's and also record live.
Canofceleri
Not to plug my own bullsh*t here, but I can't resist it after the "FL is for making techno" comment. myspace.com/frankmultari has about 9 of my songs all made on FL8. I'd describe myself as beginner-intermediate user but I've been able to use the program to make some tracks that I enjoy. Definitely not techno, you can do a lot. I've now got FL9 XXL and it's really daunting... you can really go as far as you want with it. There are very nice plugins for pianos, organs, guitars, samplers, all manner of things. Canoxa
Audacity is the best... Audacity allows you to record and edit, not write.
Mikeol1987
Sibelius or Sibelus I think its called, is apparently meant to be one of the best music writing softwares available RIP Rockstar Games 1998 - 2021
Canoxa
Sibelius or Sibelus I think its called, is apparently meant to be one of the best music writing softwares available Sibelius, named after the Finnish composer. I find it the best, but it's also the most expensive.

Virtual DJ would be good to use in Mixing. He said he wants software to write music not mix other songs. Stick at FL Studio, it may seem difficult to understand but there is a manual with it and many free tutorials online.
