Sure, for phones with a 2.2 build available. Some of us can't get 2.2, whether OEM or third party..

In other news, a public service announcement: The realcalc app is utterly useless. If you want a calculator, get handyCalc. It does.. everything.

Charlie, the Froyo 2.2 update included full flash! I can view flash sites in full. (e.g Deadmau5.com music player. I have yet to try flash games though.

Thus we get into another weakness of Android, why the hell is flash only available in 2.2 builds onwards ? It should have been made available from version 2.1 onwards. As it stands I think I was lucky that LG updated the phone from 1.6 to 2.1, it took them nearly a year to do it as well. So I don't think there is going to be a 2.2 any time this side of eternity. It is a pretty big oversight on Google's behalf to incorporate flash so late into the game.

As it stands I will probably only end up with 2.2 when I get a new phone which isn't going to happen till this one dies.

You can definitely tell LG skimped on the GPS though tounge2.gif by the time the phone gets it's location by satellite you have arrived at your destination lol.

You could always try rooting it and installing the official 2.2 ROM. Haven't a clue when it comes to rooting though but i'm sure Pico or one of the other lads do. They are indeed very odd with the updates, i myself am lucky that my Legend received 2.2.

Ok anyone know why GPS works so much better on WiFi? I figured it would work better off 3G using the triangulation to get an idea of where it was. I got f*ck all of a clue how the ins and outs of phone GPS work though. Just seemed backward to me.

@Tornado, could it mainly be that Maps just load faster when you're on wifi? Just a thought... if not, and you mean the accuracy is actually better, not sure.

Regular location on a phone with out GPS on works by triangulation. Basically if 3 towers see your phone the response time of the signal will vary. Let's say your phone is detected in a 5 mile radius of one tower, 3 of another, and 1 of another the point at which these circles (edge of the radius signal from the towers) meet is where your phone is. It basically calculates signal time between three towers to find you.

With a GPS signal, it actually sends a signal to a GPS satellite, so the two are communicating. This is why GPS doesn't work well inside a building, the GPS signal isn't good at penetrating much more than a windshield.

Over Wifi... well if GPS is off, then it's going either by the Wifi's source location (doubtful, as it'd be the ISP's originating area, most likely) or the regular phone triangulated location (most likely), which shouldn't make a difference if Wifi is on or off aside from a possible quicker response time between Maps and your location to more easily pin point it on the map's latitude and longitude.

@Charming, I definitely dislike resistive. Not responsive enough, but to each their own.

As for multitasking, you'd be even more surprised with a high end Android phone. My G1 struggled to do half of what I can with the X. Not knocking your phone or rubbing it in, not trying to be an ass. Just stating what I've found to be amazing about a superphone.

The browser in Android is hands down the most advanced mobile phone browser out there. It can load any sight as if a computer would. Navigating it properly is a different thing though, but that's a hardware, or lack thereof, issue. As for Flash, yep, it's on Android 2.2.

Why just 2.2 (and eventually up)? Most likely due to the fact that phones running Android 2.2 likely are newer meaning higher end hardware capable of running flash. If they released it for versions all the way back to 1.5 you'd have people with out of date G1s and Motorola CLIQs trying to run flash and complaining at how horrid the performance is. Hell, I get a slight delay in video playback on lag.

Another reason would probably be the coding time. Fragmentation has allowed manufacturers to churn out new phones faster at an acceptable rate, as far as the sales show since consumers keep buying Android phones with old versions of Android. Some lady on the phone at work refused to UPGRADE to a newer Android phone and pay for another Devour. I couldn't believe it. She could have gotten a Citrus or a Vortex for less, and went with a sh*tty Devour. What a dumb knob.

Anyway, point is that with dozens and dozens of Android phones available, all running different (and in some cases various) versions of Android, Flash needs to develop it to load properly on all of them. That's a lot of work, I'm sure.

But, I'm going to pin most of the reasoning towards the hardware aspect. Android 2.2 phones are generally faster phones capable of utilizing Flash.

Yeah see this is why it's weird to me. It's not must maps loading it's accuracy. For example if I'm at work on 3G it works like sh*t and sends me half way across the city no matter how long I let it try to find my location. When I'm at home on my wifi though it nails it perfectly right away. I even got a popup the first time I opened maps saying it would find my location better on wifi. sh*t just seems weird to me is all.

Also @ the flash thing. It runs like sh*t on my D1. Still nice to have it though for the few sites I use it for (hockey team streams games via a flash app).

Dual cores at 1Ghz per core will make Flash like butter, I'm sure. At least I would assume, seeing the performance of my single core.

As for GPS, that's weird. What phone do you have again? Is the accuracy poor with full GPS on? I would never use directions with out GPS on, cell tower triangulation is only good for getting info on things like stores in your general vicinity.

D1. Yeah I always have GPS on. It works most places, my work is just one of the places it acts up. Oddly though it used to work fine until I updated to CM 6.1. I guess it could have something to do with the ROM but you'd think it would be like that everywhere and not just my work. Building size shouldn't matter either as it works fine in malls and other stores the relative same size as my work.

Wow, I'm dumb. You had just said you had a D1 in your previous post, lol.

But yeah, could be the ROM. CM usually makes quality stuff, maybe it installed properly or somehow the GPS portion got f*cked up. If you flash the same ROM over your current one you wouldn't need to wipe and it'd just replace the core components, I doubt you'd lose anything. Might be worth a shot...

I don't even see a mention of the Defy, unless it goes by a different name on that list? It may just not be listed yet.

Oh, and I should probably be receiving a package from my mom today, it should have the Moto Backflip in it as well. Definitely going to f*ck around with that. Should make a good gaming toy (Gameboid, Snesoid, Gensoid, etc).

out of date G1s

Pff, my G1 was only slow with a 2.2 ROM on it, with this 1.6 one its really fast.

Defy is supposed to get 2.2 around summer next year.. So probably around the same time the Nexus phones get Honeycomb. tounge.gif

Hopefully f*cking hopefully there will be custom ROMs by then. I don't have much faith in that though.

Just keep an eye are the more populated Defy forums, I'm sure there are some out there. That'll probably be the first word you get on a 2.2 ROM being out. I'll keep a mental note to read any articles on the Defy during my multiple daily Android blog runs.

@Joe, lol. The G1 is oooold. Ok processor, too little RAM. And the screen... I remember thinking it was a nice size and very clear. Comparing it with my X, well it's night and day.

Although as I said a page or so ago in this thread, I installed the new 6.1CM Froyo ROM on my G1 and it was very, very good. It still locks up from time to time, but nothing some app killing doesn't fix to free up the RAM. I could see it being a much more usable phone with 256MB of RAM. Have ~40MB available at maximum is just no enough room to play with... I barely ever hit that as a MINIMUM on my X. Now if my phone just had one of those Tegras in the link you posted! Oh man!

Yeah, the RAM is too little, Froyo just is too much for it I think, even Eclair is IMO, but with Donut its fine, especially with the RAM hack and some swap space, even with my sh*tty class 2 SD Card

Never understood the whole RAM hack thing... like 10MB or something? Is that was is freed up for RAM? If so... somewhat negligible of an amount to utilize. But if it's there, why not. Or is it a limit or way the phone manages RAM usage per app?

Ouch on the class 2. I got my class 6, 8GB microSD from Newegg a while back for like $17 with shipping. You should treat yourself, lol. It definitely helped with speeding up the phone while utilizing a Swap partition.

Also, my current line up, HTC G1, Motorola Droid X, Motorola Backflip:

Only the Droid X is active. It's funny though, I've got one from T-Mobile, VZW, and AT&T. Now I just need a Sprint phone to even it all out, lol. The G1 was my old phone, the DX my current, and the Backflip is my mom's old one. Since I got her the Droid 2 (which I need to file the insurance claim on, ugh!), she has no use for it so I took it to f*ck around with. Pretty sh*tty phone, lol.

I'm getting the Motorola Backflip today. It comes with Android 1.5, and there's no update for 2.1 in Australia. But you can download the upadate from the US version of the Motorola website here!

So I was wondering, since I'm in Australia, will I be able to update it using that link? Or will it screw it up?

Yeah it's my first biggrin.gif My sister has a HTC Desire which is really good.

I searched on google, and there's no answers! I emailed Motorola, they said it's not recommended since every region uses different configurations, and it could damage my phone sad.gif

Is it still worth trying though? lol

Hopefully 2.1 will come out in Asia Pacific some time in 2011. Anyway Android 1.5 is still an upgrade from my Nokia 5800's Symbian v52.0.007.

If you try it, I would recommend you make 100% positive that you can reflash the original SBF file. Not just a ROM, the entire SBF. That'll be your safest bet. Most likely if you flash the 2.1 update it won't ruin the phone, it just won't connect properly.

But really, it's not released in your area for a reason. Most likely being that it doesn't work, or doesn't work completely at least. So I'd advise against it. Plus, not much support out online for the Backflip, so you'd pretty much be on your own.

Well my Motorola Backflip didn't arrive today, because Australians can't estimate delivery dates for sh*t. Estimated delivery date was 24/12/10 at approximately 17:42. Well it's 18:50 now and wasted the whole day sitting at home waiting for it. Plus, they don't work Saturday and Sunday, and Monday and Tuesday are public holidays, so now I have to wait until Wednesday sad.gif FML

It enables 10MB RAM normally used by the GPU during games or other 3D apps.

I'm Aussie...SDCards are expensive here, besides, the G1's SD Card internals aren't good for much more than 4MB/s max anyway (Which this SD Card tends to reach, class just means the minimum it'll get, not the max)

Dunno if this will interest anyone but I will put it here :-

Everyone knows why VLC is so popular – it can play any audio/video file you throw at it thanks to its almost complete if not complete collection of codecs. Android users will be wondering when will we get our share of the pie. According to GigaOM, who talked with the lead VLC developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf, VLC for Android release will happen in a matter of weeks.

http://www.geekword.net/vlc-android/

You can never have too many video players to choose from and hopefully Android VLC will leave up to it's bigger brother on the PC.

If you want a Rom for the SGS, DocRambones ones are pretty good although they are only customised official roms with bloat taken away etc.

The Cyanogenmod rom for SGS is really buugy at the moment and still really an Alpha, i think although should be awesome as it is built from Googles Source android.

It will take ages for Samsung to port 2.3 to the Galaxy (they have to add all their sh*t first.)

You might be better off sniffing around XDA or Modaco to see if anyone is making a port of the Nexus S 2.3 rom as theat phone is pretty similar to the SGS.

Has anyone tried Appinventor for Android?

As he said, the Nexus S is similar to a Galaxy S phone, by which implying that it will likely get 2.3 soon. He's saying by some people porting it to the Galaxy S, but I'd say it's more likely going to come straight from Samsung quickly.

I have App Inventor, got it during the trial release. It's out for anyone to download now, in case you want it. I gave up on my first app after about 15 minutes, lol. Probably didn't help I didn't have a set functionality in mind for the app.
