Never understood the whole RAM hack thing... like 10MB or something? Is that was is freed up for RAM? If so... somewhat negligible of an amount to utilize. But if it's there, why not. Or is it a limit or way the phone manages RAM usage per app?

Ouch on the class 2. I got my class 6, 8GB microSD from Newegg a while back for like $17 with shipping. You should treat yourself, lol. It definitely helped with speeding up the phone while utilizing a Swap partition.

How on earth do you go about creating a swap partition?

Since I'm running Windows and I needed to create a Linux-formatted partition (Ext-3 or Ext-4 and a Swap) I used Paragon Partition manager. It basically sets it all up, reboots into a Paragon Partition Manager environment then creates it. On my G1, I believe my SD card had the regular FAT32 for saving files, Ext 4 for apps, and Swap as swap memory (if that's the correct term). So 3 partitions in total. I think I did something like 256MB for the Swap, 512 for the Ext and the rest for regular data.

Paragon Partition Manager makes it a breeze to set it all up. It's all visual. If you've played around with Disk Management in Windows you shouldn't have too hard of a time with Paragon.

And Android recognizes all that? Very cool, can't wait to try it out!

I don't think it does naturally. I'm pretty sure it was a feature built into the custom ROMs I was using on my G1. I think the kernal needs to be modified to utilize any other kinds of partitions on an SD card. As far as EXT partitions, the only ones it utilizes on a standard phone is built in to the onboard memory. Which, doesn't seem to be completely necessary since apps can be stored on the SD on newer Android phones with 2.2. I would assume there's a reason they still use an EXT partition for the built in memory. Probably provides better performance since Android was designed that way originally.

Speaking of apps to sd being built in... I don't see the point. Most higher end Android phones that already come with 2.2 have at least 2GB of built in storage for apps. You can fit a sh*t load of apps on 2GB. My phone for example has 8GB for apps and app related files. I laughed out loud when I read a comment on an app where the person said something like "this file is huge, please allow apps to sd!" It was 5MB. lol.gif

If you're rocking a G1 and have like 128MB (I think) for storing apps, I can understand 5MB being huge, but then if you have that and you're bringing up apps to sd, it'd be up to you to have a large enough partition and you can move ANY app that you'd like. So he was probably some moron with a Galaxy S, Droid X/2/Pro, etc that has at least 512MB of space for apps and is sucked into the saving apps on the SD fad.

Motorola Backflip finally arrived today smile.gif Loving the Android.

One problem. When I take out the 2GB Micro SD card that came with it, and put in an 8GB Micro SD card from my old phone (Nokia 5800) It doesn't recognize it.. I've tried everything. What should I do? Just stay with 2GB?

Just got a present for xmas: Motorola Defy. Tried it a bit though i won't have much time for it this week, and it is awesome. Loving android so far, the only sad thing i've found is that I tried installing APNdroid as i read on some forums to disable internet and stuff and it doesn't work, displayed an error message and forced to close... installed Quick Settings that I think that does the same thing.

Still a long way to go, a lot of apps to install tounge.gif loving it so far! anyone with the same phone?

Defy here.

You can just disable mobile data in the settings, you don't need an app to do that..

You're probably going to need to format the card in the Backflip. Back up all the data to a computer first. You should be able to plug the Backflip into the computer with the 8GB SD card in it. Put the phone into Mass Storage mode (open the notification bar from the top, tap on the USB notification, select USB Mass Storage mode and apply/ok it). Then it'll show up as a drive on the computer. If it doesn't work in the Backflip, you'll need to do it through your old phone or a card reader. If that doesn't work, then I have no clue what you had previously formatted the SD card to.

Anyway, after that, on the Backflip with the 8GB SD card in, go to Settings>SD Card and Phone Storage. Then unmount it, then format it. It will wipe all the data, but it'll now be recognized on the phone and you can copy all your old data back on it if you'd like.

When I put it in, in the notifications bar it says "SD Card removed, Please insert new one" even after I've insterted the 8GB one. It doesn't even recognize it's there, so when I plug it in the computer nothing happens...

Did you try looking in the settings on the phone? If it doesn't show there, or give you the "Format card" option then you'll need to format it via a computer to FAT32.

I did, the settings for the memory card are faded out and you can't click them, because apparently theres no memory card lol. How do you format it to FAT32?

You'll need to load it onto your computer some how. After you do that, right click on My Computer, click on Manage, then go to Disk Management and you'll see it there, right click that drive, Format, and select FAT32.

Ok, I plugged the memory card in my Nokia 5800, and then plugged that into the PC. Then the file thing came up on the computer for the memory card, so I went on My Computer, right clicked on the memory card, went Format and formatted it to the FAT32 thing. Once it was done, I put it in the Motorola Backflip, and it still didn't recognise it! damn

Hands down the best app I have found thus far is Home++. I have been waiting for the Kyocera Zio to get updated from 1.6 to 2.x and this takes my stock 1.6 from this:

I love my android but I hated that sh*tty little tab and the impossible to modify info/task bar at the top of the screen. They just looked too bland and crappy.

I prefer zeamlauncher myself so far but yeah, any kind of third party launcher is gonna improve the device (unless it's a Nexus of course).

Meh, I hate Home++. I hate the little dock thing, and I like a notification bar. Of course, mine has a Gingerbread theme which makes it look very sleek. Less child-ish than the stock Motorola theme.

Never tried zeamlauncher, and tbh the name sounds dumb, lol. But I always like trying out new home launchers, I'll check it out.

Launcher Pro and ADW.Launcher are by far the best home launcher replacements. If not the best as a fact, by popularity and general con census. They provide excellent performance and add some great features the standard launcher doesn't provide. Most other launchers have odd gimmicky features that usually look ugly or perform poorly/awkwardly.

edit: Here's a page-widener.

I took some screen shots of my phone. Tell me this isn't a sleek home screen!

Resized since all 5 home panels come out to 2,400px wide, lol. Seeing them all laid out like this gives me a better idea of all the things I use frequently on my phone.

I hate the redundancy in having a GIANT F*CKING CLOCK widget with a clock 1/2 an inch away from it in the top corner. Also, the little thought bubble in the icon tray at the bottom of the screen pulls it out of hiding at one tap...and if you drag the icon tray, the signal/battery/clock info is at the end.

Are you saying on your phone you get the battery, signal and clock info when you drag the notification bar down? Probably specific to your phone, I don't have that.

As for the clock, I primarily use it for the weather widget. And it does make looking at the time easier. The clock in the corner is tiny, even on my large screen lol.

No. Even though my taskbar is solid and yours is clear, we both still have the clock at the top corner of the screen. Having that clock AND the clock widget is just retarded.

See the red circles? Yeah, two clocks. Whats the f*cking point.

No I got that. I think you just missed what I was saying. That Home++ app hides that bar totally. Pretty much an autohide feature like windows can do with your start bar. The only use it has, after you have a battery and time widget, is to notify you of cellular/data/wifi signal. With 1.6 you are stuck with a sh*tty standard texture, an inability to hide it, and an inability to customize it. I just think it looks better, less redundant, and cleaner with the bar hidden.

Also, this Home++ gives my phone the ability to turn the home screen to landscaped mode when the phone is turned. Now I dunno if any other phones can do that but its nice looking and handy in some instances.

How do you take screenshots of the interface? Is it an app?

Um...this is kinda odd to explain. I dunno if this was a feature added on with Home++ or if it came stock but:

While on the home screen, hit the menu button. It brings up the options to click Add (widget/folder/ect), Wallpaper Preferences, Quick Start, and Settings.

Click the Preferences button. It brings you to a settings menu i which the first choice is "Graphics".

Choose "Graphics". In the Graphics options, there is an option to "Screenshot on Camera Key" that lets you take screenshots by clicking your Camera's quick button on your phone.

Thats how I do it.

Oh I see what you're saying Kevin. I agree it's less redundant the way you have it, however I like the notification bar. Having been using Android since the beginning I've become dependent on it's functions and it just being there. I hate when apps hide it, not just home replacement ones but even other ones like games. Makes switching to incoming texts too much trouble.

@Piperka, as far as I know you can either be rooted for apps to do it, or use Droid Explorer on your computer with your phone plugged in. Kevin may have found a simpler way to do it.

As for the battery widget, I primarily use it for the % readout. I hate just having an ill-defined icon to determine the battery life. I hate that Motorola applies it in 10% increments. HTC understands people like seeing 1% increments. I'm sure I'll enjoy that soon enough with a shocking phone that will be as fast as lightning, possibly coming out soon, from HTC.

The nice thing about the notification bar being hidden in Home++ is that they have gone about it quite logically.

If you look at my screenshot, there is a little comic style speech bubble icon. If you click that, the bar comes out of hiding. If you get any notifications the bar comes out of hiding long enough for you to have time to look at it and/or drag it down. I still have all the convenience when it comes to its function while avoiding the inconvenience of how f*cking ugly it is lol

Yeah I've always been able to do that on my Droid. Both stock and custom ROMs. I actually like ADW because I can set it to not turn to landscape.

Yeah, landscape mode on the home screen can be convenient. Although I always have it turned off in ADW like Rex does. It's become too bothersome when it goes into landscape when I don't want it to.

Also, I'm getting too much of an itch for a new phone. It's no good! I just got the Droid X back on June 16th, so only been like 7 months. I think the fact that I'll have an upgrade pretty much every 3-5 months is going to put me in debt spending ~$200 on a new phone each time, lol. Manufacturers need to quit making newer, better phones so often, lol. I can't stop thinking about a new phone every time I pull out my X. Hopefully next month the phone I think will be out, will actually be out so I can get it.

I feel bad for you guys who have to wait 2 years to get a new one on contract. I don't know how I'd live with that... it definitely was a bitch hanging on to my G1 and watching generation after generation of new Android phones coming out.
