Hey, I have been playing alot of online and multiplayer on GTA IV but nothing of the main story.

The only GTA game I have really played right through is Chinatown Wars and I absolutley loved it but I dont want to the play the main story if it is boring or way to difficult (like... almost impossible to play through)

So is the main story good and worth playing through?

GTA IV has got the best story of every GTA's. It's like watching great gangster movie with italians, russians and every other nations. It is pretty long and interesting. It makes you feel happy, sad, and angry at some moments. It makes you like living in Liberty City, and what's more, going thru the story isn't difficult. If you never played the story you should try right away.

The story is great I think. It mixes drama, action, and makes you feel like you're living the life of a European immigrant that has arrived into a strange new place.

It's slow in some places, but overall it's a well written story.

It's painfully dull and boring,

You're not missing much.

I agree with that; the GTA IV story is very boring… but then I really don’t care about stories in video games anyway; it seems like something a woman would be interested in; that’s just my opinion.

I guess I’m getting too old; when I was a kid the only stories in video games were very simple.

example: Donkey Kong grabs the girl, the little Italian guy recues her, she gets pregnant, begin the next level. That’s all I need.

lol you're so old school. I still remember when video games had very simple stories aswell, but I mainly play games like GTA for their story these days. smile.gif

If you care about games with storylines you should play it. If you don't and just purely play games for the mindless fun aspect (read: your mental abilities are limited which makes you think that GTA = KILLINGSPREEZ AND KEWL FAST CARZ) then don't play the storyline and keep on doing what you were doing...

You should play it! The story is by far the best of all GTA series in my opinion. It's not really very difficult at all. And yes, it mixes of drama, action, etc. It's like you're watching a drama series. It's like a Season 1, 2 and it goes on. If sometimes you find it difficult, try using the cheat codes but do not save your game manually. Let it set as auto-saved.

It's worse than SA but still good. biggrin.gif

The story by itself it's better than SA's but the game is not as funny, besides, the story is kinda tragic, just look at the endings, the other characters of GTA end up as high rollers, but niko, well, niko gets rich but he doesn't enjoy the money as Tommy or CJ. even so this is a GTA, that's all you have to know to play it and love it

This is what happens when you make a primarily single player game, except for fan modifications and two-player on the PS2 version of San Andreas plus on the PSP versions of LCS and VCS, and make it an online multiplayer game, it makes people play the game for it's multiplayer and not the story itself, I mean, for games like World of Warcraft or Counter-Strike: Source, which were made primarily for the multiplayer it's okay. And, for the record, I know most people have played through the story and I have played multiplayer and quite enjoy it. Sorry for the mini-rant, a cookie for your trouble of reading it all cookie.gif .

The story starts well but ends up feeling like it was wrapped up in a hurry, both the story and the missions were disapointing in terms of execution, progression, etc.

It just keeps getting worse, like an excuse to play, explore LC and unlock content and features.

The story lost me after Bohan and the missions never got any good, maybe they saved up for the episodes or something..

Wowww, I call sexism on that one.

I found the overall story really darn engrossing. The amount of emotion and importance placed on even simple missions was very enjoyable and immersive. However, towards the end of the game I started feeling like missions fell into a repetitive "go here, kill that guy for this reason" sort of deal.

To be fair, if you have a game developed for an 18+ market, but you have a helluva lot of players much younger than that, then the younger ones might not be so interested in the storyline as they are in the action. No doubt there are some who are, but I suspect they are in the minority. I would have been the same at their age, so this is not a criticism, just a thought. cool.gif

I'm in the midst of playing through the story missions again, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It might not be a fun game, as in San-Andreas-lunacy-fun, but the dialogue is hilarious at times. If you miss some of this hillariousness in the regular dialogue, you can call up Roman once in a while, pretty much after each completed mission, and have a talk. It's quite amusing.

I wouldn't be able to purchase a GTA game, or any game for that matter, and completely ignore the single player portion of the game. Be it horrible or awesome, I'd have to play it to find out. Just ignoring it completely seems like an awful waste, especially with a game like GTAIV.

The story is probably the most original one in the GTA universe. The other games were mostly based on movie ideas (i.e. GTA III = New York gangster flicks, Vice City = Miami Vice/Scarface types, and San Andreas = Boyz In The Hood/LA gangster films).

Its difficult to categorize IV in one genre like you could with the previous three major GTA games. It certainly has specific references to movies (like the Puerto Rican Connection's chase sequence similar to that of the French Connection), but the story certain has only a "theme" rather than a "genre." This is why I think IV has the best story because it draws away from the standard of other GTA storylines.

San Andreas and vice city by far had the greatest story lines of the series, it seems alot of that was sacrificed in GTA IV in exchange for better graphics/physics/realism.

But the story mode is still very strong, it just lacks the epic feeling you got from San Andreas or Vice City.

The storyline is quite amazing (probably still doesn't beat MGS4's though, but then what does?) and the game is overall easy it seems. My complaint though is that the mission gameplay usually feels quite repetitive despite R* giving you a lot more options to pass missions sometimes. Let's just say you won't have any missions where you're a passenger/riding shotgun/co-pilot and you gun at enemies while somebody else controls the vehicle. I really liked the mission Reuniting the Families in GTA SA.

I bought GTA 4 for the single player!!!!!

You shouldn't go on multiplayer unless you know the story!

I was dissapointed with the missions. The storyline dosen't really have many "strong" distinct points at all. Nothing I could specifically think back to and remember after completing it. No stand out dialogue except that heard in the trailers (and then only so because the trailers were all we had for ages). The cool characters all get killed off way too quickly leaving the boring bland ones.

And the missions sarcasm.gif "drive here and kill this guy" "kill this guy and drive away" "chase this guy and kill him" "drive here and kill this guy then chase this other guy and kill him" "chase this guy and kill him then kill this other guy and then chase this other guy and kill him"

Hardly any missions at all make use of any interesting unique parts of the map. Like a small handful.

I never would have guessed that most of the missions in a GTA game would require to go to certian locations to kill people, and getting involved in chases. sarcasm.gif

The main story was the best GTA story that can be. And only the last missions are kind of hard and long, others are quick and cool. For someone like me who finished the main story about 7 times, I can say that it's not too hard. The best thing I liked, the thing that no other GTA had was the missions where you can choose if to do them or not, and it will effect the story line forever.
