Euros
hi guys, i have a radeon hd 4870 x2, its a 2 gb gddr5 card but when i play and see graphic options, i only see about half of it. Ive seen videos also like the gtx 295 i see their vram on the game is only half of it. Is it that gta iv does not support dual gpus? Single gpus in crossfire and sli mode is better? Did i just waste my money buying this card?
JeddyH
The 4870 x2 is 2 cards joined together, so its 1gb x 2 All the other 1gb is doing is mirroring the data on the first 1gb

Maybe some one else who knows more about SLI will give you a more detailed response. SLI is not a waste of money though because the processing power of the Dual GPU's can improve performance a lot in some games.
Extortionate
You only wasted your money if you intended to use SLI with GTA IV. I'd enjoy your other SLI enabled games though.
Jigglyass
If you bough this card in hopes that you can max out GTA 4 without any command lines, then yes you wasted your money.
Girish
SLI? The OP doesn't even have a Nvidia card. You mean Crossfire. Lodis is right though. 2 video cards does not double the VRAM. It's a common mistake people make. This is why you should always consult someone with a little bit of technical knowledge before splashing out your hard earned money. Euros
yes crossfire not sli. What command lines? Can it improve my performance however? Nvm about the waste money thing theres still games out there rather than gta iv that i can play with this card

supermortalhuman
You should have no problem with that card. Basically, if you can't play GTA IV, it's NOT your video card (I have a 3850 and it runs excellently) What is your CPU (this is the problem)? To max GTA out you will need either a GTX275 or 260 with 1792 MB not GTX295. Then you can also use GTX285 2GB. As for ATi the best option is a 4890 2GB. If you're not worried about the cash too much, I'm sure GTA would LOVE one of those in a 2GB version. It'd be no contest matched with your CPU at that point I'd think. Yeah get one of those 5870 2GB if you got cash. If not the price of GTX285 should fall very soon due to these cards so it will cost less.

Well, that's nice to hear, can I ask, what frames per second you get with that card/cpu? thanks if it's possible (in the market again soon). anus
Wow you're planning on getting another card just to max out IV when you have a HD4870X2 ? VRAM isn't everything. Sure more VRAM helps, but a card as beastly as the 4870X2 would be able to make up for the less VRAM with it's speed. To max out the game, go to the folder where IV is installed and create a new text document (right click a blank space in the folder window, go to New> New Text Document). Now type "-norestrictions" in the text document without the quotations and save the file as "commandline.txt" without the quotations. Now start up IV and max out your settings. I'm sure the card would be able to handle it with ease.
mkey82
Better use availablevidmem and set the exact amount you need. For instance, use norestrictions, then choose all the settings you need/want. Now note the required amount of VRAM as the game tells you. All that remains is to calculate: <required VRAM>/<available VRAM> and use that as avaliablevidmem parameter. Ex: -avaialblevidmem 1.
Chris_Waddle
What operating system are you running? Don't forget that if you are using XP32, some of the video ram is also taken into account with the system ram. XP32 can only handle around 3.5 - 3.8gig of ram in total. If you have a 2gig graphics card, you are seriously taking a chunk out of your system ram.
Euros
thx for the answers. I configured it out myself, didnt use command line. Getting good fps, 40~50. I think its ok now
