GTA4 causes immediate PC shutdown

I'm having an issue with GTA4 and hoping someone can help me out.

I just bought the game yesterday, everything was working perfectly. No glitches, running smooth.

Today when I launched the game, the entire computer shut down (immediately when the "Grand Theft Auto 4" logo first appeared), one second and the PC is off and rebooting. I've tried launching the game five times now, and it keeps happening every time.

This is not a RAM, overheating, or power problem. I can play other power intensive games (Crysis, Far Cry 2) for hours and hours without any problems. I've done memory tests and the RAM is stable. Thanks in advance for the help.

Specs-

i7 975

6gb of RAM

GTX 295

1000W PSU (plenty of juice on the +12v rail)

Vista 64-bit SP2

EDIT- I just got past the GTA4 logo, it finally loaded the menu without shutting down. I hit "Start" to load the game, and then it shut the computer down immediately, again.

Try deleting all files from the Settings folder. More info here.

If that doesn't help, reinstall everything. Uninstall the game, delete everything related to it and reinstall it. Also, reinstall your video drivers. Make sure they're up-to-date.

Also, ensure that you close all running application while starting the game.

Thanks for the response.

I deleted the settings folder, still having the problem unfortunately. Drivers are the latest from nvidia's website. Closed all background applications, no luck with that either.

I'm reinstalling the game now. Hopefully all goes well.

After the reinstall, everything seems to be working!

Thanks for all the help. Hopefully I won't run into this issue anymore.

The game seems to be doing the same thing again....quite a disappointment.

Can't believe I just spent $50 on a game that is completely unplayable.

Have you actually checked the temperatures while the game is running?

Remember, this game is more intensive and demanding than Crysis or Far Cry 2. You might require some additional cooling.

Also, can you run it on all low settings?

Are your other drivers up to date as well? Disable any overclocking you've done and return it all back to stock speeds, sometimes overclocks can cause unexplainable problems.

(Nice system you got there wink.gif)

I have a Zalman CPU cooler with AS5, so the temps are actually lower than they should be. GPU temp is also normal (compared with other 295gtx owners). No overclocking here, everything is at stock settings.

All drivers are up to date; sound, gpu, chipset, etc...

I was lucky enough to load the menu this morning, so I put all the settings to low. Still shutdown my PC unfortunately.

When the game shuts it down, I don't get any error. Just a black screen for a few seconds, then the computer is back on and booting up.

*The thing that confuses me the most is when it shuts down. It's not like I can play the game for 5 minutes and then it possibly over heats.

The fact that it's happening repeatedly at the menu leads me to believe this definitely isn't a heating issue.

So, you're not getting a BSOD?

This is not a temp problem, not it's a power problem, obviously. And you can set your settings via commandline.txt file. Have you tried running some benchmarks? orthos, lynx, prime and the likes? This might be some minor issue that is causing major problems.

I've reinstalled the game several times now and I noticed something.

The first time booting up the game (after reinstall), everything will run fine. I played for 3-4 hours yesterday with no problems.

However, once I quit out of the game and try to relaunch it, that's when the crashing starts.

I've tested this several times and it produces the same results each time.

I'm going to be doing several stress tests throughout today and see how they hold up.

Thanks again for all the help, it is much appreciated.

Ran Prime95 with FFT of 4096k, four workers; for a total of seven hours.

PC was at 100% CPU activity and 5.7gb of ram was being used the entire time.

No errors, everything ran fine.

This is really boggling me mercie_blink.gif

Have you tried doing an Anti-Virus scan, it kind of sounds like you may have a Virus or something on your computer that is interfering with your programs.? Also, this works for SA, might be worth a try here, but have you tried deleting the .set file in the User Files Folder in Documents?-This works for SA sometimes, so it might work for IV-worth a shot. Also, try "rolling" back to the previous driver version and see if that helps-the game might not be compatible with the driver version that you have installed. Hope this helps.
