Would You Recommend Getting IV First? Before the DLC's?

  1. 1. Would You Recommend Getting IV First? Before the DLC's?

    • Play through and beat IV before picking up the 2 DLC Packages

    • The 2 DLC's blow IV out of the water, and not even worth the money to buy and play through IV

I've been talking to a few of my friends who have a 360 about GTA. They dont have IV, so they couldn't get TLAD, but now they have these 2 DLC's coming as a game in itself, where you wont need IV to play them.

I tried talking them into getting IV and playing and beating it in the mean time until the DLC package comes out. But they're so pumped for TLAD and BOGT game they feel like they'll be wasting their money buying IV because everything that was in IV comes in these new games on top of a bunch of new features.

Thats why I tried to tell them, once you do get TLAD and TBOGT there really wont be a point to go back and play IV, because you'll just feel it's not as good of a game, because it's lacking everything the new DLC's are giving us. But until then, I think it'd help them understand the game thoroughly, and IV was a pretty damn good game by itself, it had me into the story. It's just cool to play through IV to see how the new stories tie into eachother, being that they take place during the same time frame.

That being said. Should I tell my friends to go ahead and save their money, and just get the stand alone DLC game package? Or should I tell them it's worth it to go buy IV play through it, and beat it, then get the DLC's when they come out? It'd be dumb for them to buy it and play it after they go and pick up TLAD and TBOGT, so really by that point, they'd be getting it to just be let down.

BTW, they're more into the fun and cool sh*t you can do in GTA, as opposed to buying it for the story. I mean they loved Saints Row 2, and that's what ultimately stopped them from getting IV. They just saw everything that both games had to offer, so they decided to side with SR2. But that's what's so great about the GTA franchise, their storylines, along with all the cool additions they gave you. But I think IV was focused mainly on the story, and introducing us to the new graphics and game engine, and building on that platform, instead of going all out right from the get go, and leaving themselves no room for improvement, except for more awesome storylines.

What do you guys think? Talk them into playing through IV, or the stand alone DLC's are good enough on their own you dont need to play IV to understand them?

Nikos story acts as a kind of bass, and prelude to teh others. Without it thetwists that TLAD and TBoGT make mean nothing.

If your a fan of the series you can't miss out on IV.

If your happy going on a rampage and wanna ignore the missons and story sure go ahead with the DLC disc.

Playing IV will let you get the feel for the city the rest of us have. Don't forget, R* assume you already know the city well enough by the time you come to play the DLC episodes, and even playing for a month or two can help vastly in terms of understanding the controls and physics, as well as getting your head around the often confusing map.

True that.. Good point. They're going to have a tough time with direction if they dont play IV first. IV breaks you in, and helps you understand the city. They're going to be failing missions left and right if they have to make it to a location by a certain time. They're going to end up getting pissed. Hahah, Im going to tell them that.

I hate to be a stick in the mud, but this is America do whatever the hell you want.

He asked opinions, and he got them. It's not like I'm going to hunt him down and kill him if he doesn't do what I say.

It's pretty obvious, tell them to go play IV first. It's a great setup for the DLC package.

I would definitely recommend trying out the original game before playing the DLC. The story acts as a kind of base for the other two, and it also allows you to get a feel for the game as well as getting used to the features of the original before trying all of the new content.

Play IV first.. you'll understand a whole lot more of the story then. TBoGT will probarly kick vanilla's ass, but the first time playing the story isn't so bad wink.gif

The episodes assume you are familiar with the game and the layout of the city, and throws you straight into the thick of the action. I imagine that it would be rather confusing and difficult if one has not gotten to grips with GTA IV.

Besides, you wouldn't be able to appreciate the parts where the plot intertwines with GTA IV.

R* made the games in this order because we are meant to play them that way. But of course it's your choice. However I would recommend you playing GTA IV before the DLC episodes.

Yup, I'll definitely get the original GTA IV first before playing the TLAD and BOGT if I were them. To get familiar with the city and controls, have some fun and training before entering the DLCs' multiplayer games. Storylines are indeed important to me. If not I'll kind of get lost of what's happening in TLAD or BOGT without playing the first game of GTA IV. If they're a fan of GTA and have an Xbox360, recommend them to get it! It is worth the money and for collections. Unless they're going for the killings and missions and doesn't care for story, save their money then.

After all, Niko Bellic kick ass!!!

No doubt that you should get and play GTA IV the most you can before picking up the DLCs. Reasons:

1 - Niko's story is the base of the other two stories. Without playing IV you won't understand the episodes at all. Both TLAD and TBOGT are like "side stories" compared to Niko's story. They help you understand some of the things that weren't well explained in the main game.

2 - You'll be able to know the entire city, how to drive, fight, all the characters, etc. Basically you'll know how the game works, which is something useful, because Rockstar presumes that you already know how the game works, so they won't give you "tutorial missions".

3 - GTA IV is a great game! It's well worth the money. biggrin.gif

4 - If you buy it now and start playing, you can then buy the Episodes from Liberty City pack and play TLAD and TBOGT in a row, which is great. I still remember when I played all Half-Life games in 2 weeks. tounge.gif

Why are there no more than two options in this poll.

Actually, it would be quite interesting to see play the DLCs first and then play IV. Just like the other way around, it would interesting for someone who has never played IV to see how its story overlaps with TLAD and TBOGT. I'm sure there will be atleast one person who does this once the EFLC disc set comes out.

Don't mean to burst your bullsh*t, but not everyone who plays the game is in America.
