So, I recently got GTA4, I have the 1.0.0.4 patch, and my FPS hopes didn't live up to its expectations, which is quite odd really as there is the same guy on youtube with the same specs(prob diff mobo, ram, etc) and can run it perfectly on medium settings, and this is this video, can't speak his language, so, I umm didn't ask anything confused.gif :

Now of course my game doesn't run like that, and from what I've noticed several other games don't run the same way as it should too, notably NFSUC, now maybe that's the games fault itself, but I've seen people with little bit under my specs still get to run NFSUC on max settings. I mean, I can run NFSUC on max, I just have to put shadows on off for some odd reason because whenever I max it out I get noticeable FPS drops when there are like 4-5 cars and it goes around like 18-40FPS if my memory serves me right, which doesn't happen on other systems, but it may be different this time as from what all I've done(defragged and all that).

Now due to all this notable difference than other systems in terms of FPS in games I actually tried to bother and fix it.

So I did some CCleaner, defragged my HDD, got Vista SP1, and still no difference, so I was thinking if maybe if I try Win7 or XP, in which I haven't tried yet.

So, I resulted on thinking on buying a quad core, cause afaik my mobo can support quad cores. I only have 60 bucks so I probably won't get anything yet but I can wait, and I wouldn't mind a good suggestion from this board(coughwarlordcough). I asked my brother and see if he can sell my CPU as of now and so I can have more money to spend on, but he thought about getting some more ram or better ram to be exact, in which I haven't thought about and I do not know what does ram help with GTA4, so.

Now about GTA4, I do get random hiccups very randomly after some while but no crashes whatsoever, and I run the game at:

Statistics

Average FPS: 37.09

Duration: 37.34 sec

CPU Usage: 85%

System memory usage: 92%

Video memory usage: 80%

Graphics Settings

Video Mode: 1280 x 1024 (60 Hz)

Reflection Quality: Medium

Water Quality: Low

Shadow Quality: High(shadows look like sh*t, have to keep em high D:)

Texture Quality: Medium

Texture Filter Quality: High

View Distance: 1

Detail Distance: 1

Vehicle Density: 15

Shadow Density: 0

Definition: On

Now as you see it only shows AVG FPS, and that benchmark is totally nothing compared to what I get when I play the game sigh.gif

Just so you guys know I hate it when my FPS dips below the 25mark and it happens from time to time at places, and with these settings for the game I'm pretty sure I should be getting better, maybe I just need to play around with the settings more, or maybe I'm just whining too much. Must say though this game is just as addicting as its predecessor. tounge.gif

As of now really I just have 3 options.

1. Buy a aftermarket cooler for my CPU and try overclocking it, of course with the general knowledge and some patience.(cheaper)

2. Ask you guys/girls what's the best thing to do as of now, like run this program etc etc, might help.(great idea)

3. Install Win7 or WinXP and start again.

4. Buy a quad(trying to avoid this one)

Also, my PC specs

AMD X2 7750 BE @ 2.7

2GB of DDR2 800 ram

ATI 4850 512mb

Gigabyte MA770-UD3

Vista Home Prem 64bit

If you are able to get this far on this post, well congratulations and thank you for anyone who replies. smile.gif

~oh and also I have the 9.8 ati drivers.

You can run it at 37 FPs and its not enough for you? son i cant run it at all so be a little grateful. and lower the screen resolution!

EDIT: lower your shadow and texture quality too. people think texture quality doesnt matter but it actually DOES.

if you wanna play this game at higher FPs set some things lower. its the game that matters not how pleasent to the eye it is.

A quad core processor would really help since I have a Q6600 2.4 GHz and a HD 4850 and my fps rarely drops below 30 on medium settings. But if you're not in a position to upgrade, overclocking would be the second best option. You should see a considerable boost in performance.

Also, turn off shadows and VSync. For the most part, shadows are killing your performance.

Try the -memrestrict command as suggested in the pinned topic.

You can also upgrade to the latest SP2 for Vista.

Please re-read my post, I certainly don't get 37 AVG FPS and if I did, I wouldn't be whining right now. tounge.gif

Thank you, I tried that memrestrict yesterday and it certainly stop most of my stutters in-game, I just finished doing a mission for brucie and the less stutters really f*cking helps inlove.gif , I'll also look into downloading SP2 for Vista asap, and maybe even overclocking my processor.

Thank you for the replys, I appreciate your time, and if anyone has any more information or something to tell me, please reply. smile.gif

edit ~oh btw girish, if you're able to see this topic again, if you don't mind telling me the drivers you got for your vid card? thanks. smile.gif

The game actually performs better on high textures then it does on med confused.gif On machines that can take it, that is.

rdbx1234, you should always use the latest ATI driver, in my case, the latest runs the game the best. And you're right, you should be doing better on those settings, those are pretty much below medium. I didn't understand, that vista you have installed is freshly installed or not? Usually, if you get huge FPS changes (like in my cse, it vried from 2 to 50 tounge2.gif) a fresh OS install fixes it while windows 7 gave me the least stutter, but FPS has not radically changed.

I actually just finished installing XP right now and the drivers, so, hopefully what you're saying will come true when I try it after school. tounge.gif

My Vista isn't a fresh install, I installed it like, 3 months ago. cry.gif

Oh and maybe I should go check out Win7 if that is the case, thank you, mkey. smile.gif

Well, XP for me didn't work well. It gave me good (standard) FPS but with a lot of stalling and stuttering, it was unplayable.

OS old three months might not be fresh enough for GTAIV, especially if you use it for internet and stuff.

Stuttering is so small and so random I don't even notice it, only thing I noticed is that sometimes textures popup(which doesnt happen frequently as well). There is no such thing as low in my options now(except for the view distance, detail distance, and shadow density), all are either medium or high(shadows are on high inlove.gif ), and I get about 28-49FPS outdoors. tounge.gif

So really, thank you for the people who helped/replyed on here, oh and I re-installed GTA4 and I used the 1.0.0.3 patch, unfortunately I can't play online without having the latest patch, so my question is, will I be able to downgrade patches? I assume the answer is no? Just incase 1.0.0.4 gives me a decrease in FPS. tounge.gif

Good day everyone, time to play GTA4 for me. moto_whistle.gif

As we all know 1.0.3.0 gave us all better FPS so it might decrease. For me the 4.0 gave me better FPS but shadows look crap oil paint.

About FPS.

Just tried playing GTA4 again after defrag, wasn't pleased. confused.gif

I can't really tell if my FPS decrease or it's just me being too concerned about it and having my FPS display on, and for some odd reason I feel like the shadows have become, well, uglier, but that doesn't make sense to me because I'm pretty sure a defrag wouldn't mess something up like shadows. Also, it looks like I get more pop-up with textures but after I did quite a long cop chase it just magically disappeared. turn.gif

~edit; also, i used auslogics defrag.

and um, multiplayer wasn't all that great, wasn't bad either. It was just the amount of players, so few for such a game. Although I must say even though I sometimes dipped below 20, it was still f*cking awesome.

Anyways, 1.0.4.0 had a slight decrease in my FPS(prob 4-6) and um, I just really hope I don't need to re-install GTA4 just to use 1.0.3.0.

Install 1.0.3.0 on top of 1.0.4.0. Not too recommended but it works with no reinstalls.

Yup, tried it and it works, thanks! smile.gif

Only problem was that this one particular taxi, something in it's wheel was well, a grey circle in the middle. But oh well.

Also, I can't believe how much of an increase in FPS a OC could give, I mean, I oc'ed my CPU to 3.2 from 2.7 and I got like a 10 FPS increase. wow.gif

Well, I got only 10% better FPS for a 20% OC so that's a lot.

I got it to work with veh density at 100 and med high settings with rarely any dips below 20 and hangs around 25-40 range, but then I finished the game(was actually thinking about repeating it twice). I also had the farclip @ 500 and xliveless. Of course I got a little interested on how multiplayer is again, so I put back the original timecyc, take out xliveless, and installed 1.0.4.0.

Now from what I've noticed I am able to play correctly when there is like 4-6 people, on every mode that I've tried(except race and others that I haven't tried because there was no people confused.gif ), that I get an avg FPS of 28-45. Now, when I try something like race, on any amount of people, I get FPS like 15-25, and that's quite irritating, same goes for the other modes, except theirs happen when there is a lot of people(more than 10-12, I assume?).

So, I was wondering, if there is anyway, you know, to make it go a lil faster, or if it's possible to use mods online so I could use the farclip and maybe bring some of my FPS back up, or if that isn't possible, use the lowest settings possible I assume?

I must say I'm quite enjoying the GTA Race and cops and crooks, just needs more people! Maybe I'm just playing the game at the wrong time.

~edit; also, is there any f*cking way to turn down the voice chat volume or something, I can't play my music with people speaking language I do not know of or dumb kids saying stupid sh*t.

Don't know about the volume (maybe in the menu where you can adjust the loudness of the car stereo and background noise), but mods are partially supported. You can edit some files that don't give you the edge over other players (I assume farclip falls into that category). Check out this http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=380830

As I see from a quick read in Alexanders post, it seems timecyc isn't part of it. So, YAY!!!! tounge.gif
