xTRLx
Hey, I bought an Nvidia Geforce 9600GT online, and I'm worrying It's a PCI-E card, when I think the card I'm currently using (8200) is just a PCI. Will the 9600 be compatibable with my PC?
supermortalhuman
I think your card is PCIe but it could be PCI. Thing is, I think Nvidia stopped making PCI cards since before they dropped AGP, so I really think you're safe. The only thing I can imagine is if the card is PCIe 2.0 and should work in pcie old slots, but your mobo might complain. Can you take a picture of the inside of the case or tell me which of these it uses: http://media.hardwareanalysis.com/articles/large/11308.jpg The white ones are PCI, the black one is PCIe
randir14
The Nvidia 8200 is an integrated card (I know because my motherboard has it). I'm 100% sure you have a PCI-E slot to put that 9600 in.
xTRLx
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm currently at my dads house, so I can't look inside, but I'm kinda thinking it might be white slots, but then again, when I say that, I can't be 100% sure. Actually, I think they're black slots. Damn, looks like I'm gonna have to wait a day or two. Thanks for the help man. Could you possibly look up for me if the 8200 is PCI or PCI-E? Thanks. EDIT: Thanks Randir, I think you're right, the 8200 is an integrated card. Meaning my PC should have a PCI-E slot. xTRLx
One last question, sorry. How many watts/volts (I'm not sure, I'm crap at knowing the difference) does the 9600 use? My PC uses 450 I think, will the card be alright?

Wolf68k
Ok so we know the 8200 is an on-board card that however does NOT mean you have a PCIE slot. You might not have any graphics slot at all, AGP or PCIE. We need to know the make and model number of your motherboard @randir14 How can you be so sure? If it's a Dell or HP (or the alike) it's likely, to save money, that they ordered their mobo maker to not include any graphic slot because the video would be on-board. Meaning no PCIE or AGP slot. There should be PCI slots and a slim chance of a PCIE 1x slot.

Wolf: Chances are he does, I'd be saying that if it was a x4500HD as his old GPU or something, but the majority of nVidia integrated boards have PCIe, due to them being used by competent manufacturers or by smaller businesses who just use retail motherboards in their systems. Wolf68k
Good chance, sure I could agree with that, but not 100% http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813500021 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813153114

There are no 8 series at my local outlet, which astounds me, frankly! They offer mostly AGP which IS going to be faster then PCI slots. I'm not recalling a Dell with only integrated video, it would have PCI if nothing else. BTW, a newer gen product on the market makes a spare USB port a DVI output that adapts to VGA!!! I plan to get one of those. Edited September 3, 2009 by Slamman

You're quoting someone that looks like they kinda misread something, then you babble about something no one cares about, then you top it off with some really whack which has nothing to do with anything. Not only do you not even know what you're talking about, but you're just babbling about random sh*t that nobody f*cking cares about. You don't NEED a PCI card to run Vista Aero, there are integrated graphics chips such as the Geforce 7050 that run Aero just fine.
