lordjubblydave
TPlug your friends controller into your ps3 with your usb cable, Turn the controller on while it is plugged in. You should be able to then unplug it and play wirelessly.
Slamman
I got a DS3 from the pawnshop here, it was in my actual price range, so look to upgrade around town, it may suit you better. I use a tethered USB I can always attach or detach from, so as above, try that as well. You should be able to press the PS button and have it register with the PS3 via that method. I will be testing a Dell BlueTooth keyboard hoping that will work wirelessly with PS3 as well
asimov
Ignore Slamman. This problem often happens if you charge a controller from flat. If resetting your PS3 doesn't work you can get a toothpick or something and hit the reset button on the back of the controller.
retro213
yeah only thing is i lost my usb cord and @asimov: i pressed the reset button and turned it on and nothing happens and how do i restart i know youo hold down the manual button to turn on the ps3 for 5 seconds but wont that cause a fan test and i hear that causes system damage. asimov
Was the controller already turned on when you hit reset? Make sure it is. Hold the power button down to do a reset, you only do a fan test if you're holding down the eject button when you switch the console on. Besides, the fan test was built in by Sony as a diagnostic test I don't think they would include something like that would damage your system. As long as you don't do it every week you'll be fine. asimov
I wouldn't go plugging it into the wall with a different charger. It could run at a differernt power rating -volts/amps- and burn out the battery. If the above stuff isin't working try calling Sony, the controller may be f*cked. SyphonPayne
A PS3 controller will only charge on a PS3 or a PC. I have tried wall chargers, but they don't work.

Slamman
I've gone that very route as well, my friend, and SADLY, there is NOT. You should try local gaming stores for discounted controllers and see if anyone refurbs them near you. I am not sure where GameStop takes in theirs to resell, but they are a good deal at the local Pawn Shop where I bought mine. I don't know about self-repair, I just know I ain't paying $50 for the damn thing!
