Could you be more precise about your computer specs? You're not giving enough information about what CPU and GPU you have (there are a lot of Core 2 Duo models and 1GB Nvidia cards).

Here are the minimum system requirements for GTA IV. If you're below them, it's normal that the game will run slowly, or don't even run.

Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3

1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2 64

1 GB of RAM (Windows XP) or 1.5 GB of RAM (Windows Vista)

16 GB free hard drive space

256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

If you're above the minimum system requirements, probably something is wrong and you could try some tweaks or solutions. But first you need to be more specific about your specs.

Well your graphics card isn't really good for this game, but I think it's good enough to run it at the lowest possible settings with a reasonable framerate. Not sure though, the 9400GT isn't powerful, and GTA IV is a very demanding game.

Btw, what settings are you using? Can you post a benchmark? How many FPS are you getting?

Anyway, here are some things you can try:

- Update the game to the latest version (1.0.4.0)

- Update your drivers;

- Clean your disk with CCleaner or TuneUp Utilities or other similar program;

- Defrag;

Hope it helps. smile.gif

You say you have a dual core processor running at 3.4 Ghz. Is that overclocked? Or do you mean 1.7Ghz x 2?

Also you have 2560Mb of Ram, so is that 1Gb +1Gb + 512Mb? If so, it is not running DDR2. they need to be matched pairs. Remove the 512MB strip.

Your card is not much good I think, lower than the rockstar recommended 8600GT. Upgrading to at least 8800GT or 4830 is better.

He said he has a 9400 GT 1GB so why would he want to go down to an 8800 GT? 9 Series to an 8 Series, your comment makes no sense.

The game should run ok on low-med settings on those specs but dont expect too much from GTA IV, very demanding on your system

You're running too high settings. Decrease texture quality to low, render quality to low, view distance to 0 and detail distance to 0. Also set your resolution to 800 x 600.

You really need to use the lowest settings possible, use LOW or OFF on everything and 0 on all sliders. Also patch your game to version 1.0.4.0. Only this way you can be sure you can run the game at the minimum. Then start raising things slowly until you find a good balance between performance and graphics.

Don't worry about overclocking your graphics card yet. You won't get much more performance out of it, and you risk damaging it.

Still, having a framerate of 3 FPS is indeed too low. Your computer is not good, and your CPU is below the minimum system requirements, but your graphics card should perform better, and you also have enough RAM to at least run the game better.

Did you try reinstalling the game? Or then go Documents and Settings\YOUR USERNAME\Local Definition\Application Data\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\Settings and delete the file "settings.cfg".

You can also try the following commandline: -safemode

Create a normal .txt file (notepad) with the name "commandline" (don't use the ""), then write "-safemode" insite it (again without the ""). Save the file and place it on GTA IV directory.

That 9400GT is weak because it only has a 128 bit memory interface. Get a card with a 256bit memory interface, like a 9600GT, they're well worth it.

BTW, no amount of overclocking will make that card work better. Stay clear of cards with a 128 bit memory interface, if you do any kind of serious gaming.

It seems you don't have much idea about Nvidia's numbering system. Higher the number does NOT mean the card is better (it's not like ATI). The first number only represents the series, the next 3 numbers will tell you which card is better (higher the number better the card). So, a 8800GT is way better than a 9400GT since 800 > 400. wink.gif

Need I say anymore?

Regardless of the game, it just shows you how bad the card is. 60fps with a 9600GT, 11fps with a 9400GT.

You're welcome. colgate.gif I'm glad it's working better.

Yeah the graphics suck when you play at the minimum settings. But at least you can play...
