Hello all,

When GTA4 first came out, I tried it on my then brand-spanking new laptop, which was NOT designed for gaming but kept well up to pace with any games of that time. I bought GTA4, and could barely get it past a slideshow, even with all settings set at their lowest.

I come to the GTAForums community again nearly a year on, asking the same questions as I did a year ago..

What can you think of to allow me to get GTA4 running with reasonable playing performance (i.e. ~20fps) that doesn't involve hardware changes (I'm a student, so finances aren't at their premium).

I've applied the latest patch, tried various commandline and GTA4.exe target tweaks, and none give a reasonable rise in performance.

It may well be that all is lost and there IS nothing I can do, despite the year the community has had to come up with ways round GTA4's hungry ways..

I do hope not.

My system specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 2.4Ghz

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS

4GB RAM

Vista Home 32-bit

All drivers are up to date, if I've missed anything off the system specs, let me know and I'll fetch it for you.

I've managed to get this machine, which was not really designed for up-to-date gaming, able to run things like Fallout 3 and Burnout Paradise at very acceptable fps, despite the video card being really suited more for multimedia than gaming.

ANY help would be massively appreciated. Even if I rise to fps that just allows me to simply drive around like a lunatic, that'd be fine by me. Atm the game is pretty much unplayable.

Many thanks, in advance, and sorry for the length of this post.

The Horror Is Alive

There really isn't much you CAN do, I have a pretty similar laptop, and I get sub-30FPS performance with medium settings. Try applying the latest patch, then taking everything down to low and 800x600.

As I said,

ALL my settings are at their lowest possible levels.

If you have a similar laptop and are running 30fps, or there abouts, do tell me how.

I'm struggling to manage 10, at BEST

Benedict

Update the game to the latest patch and update your video drivers too.

Try the -memrestrict command as suggested in the pinned topic.

Also, try defragging the hard drive you've installed the game on.

You can also try running the game in windowed mode or using the -height and -width commands to run the game at a resolution lower than 800x600. That should help you gain a few more fps.

Switch to a 64 bit XP Pro install if you can, THAT hardware is going to most likely do it's very best from here on out, on that platform, with not many other options (in windows), and it's not a bad option at all. Taking vista out of that equation, and mixing another 32 bits up in there, might really renew your system, and you'll actually get that 4gb of ram.

I would say Windows 7 64 bit. smile.gif

Always been using XP (it's epic for lowspec PCs), then Vista but Windows 7 now (faster than my clean Vista install, for me) - going back to XP is a nono here and your laptop can definitely run it.

XP x64 sucks ass anyway, I have tried it once and it couldn't find drivers for like halve of my drivers.

Aka, if I were you I would do a CLEAN install of Windows 7 64 bit.

That way you get rid of any current drive issues, fragmentation and whatnot, while you get a better OS aswell. biggrin.gif

Start with a clean OS install and go from there. Like Nillus suggests, go with Windows 7 64 bit.
