Girish
Turn Auto update off then. I only update once a month or so. If you think it's the same update, note down the update details and compare them with your update history.

Edmachine
Check if they are the same updates. Write down the update number and/or name, install it, reboot. If the updates show up again, check if they are the same. If they are: Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Check "Show updates" and just look for the updates. Usually under "Windows XP - Software updates" at the bottom of the list. Find the bad updates and uninstall them. Then either run or don't run Windows Update again. If you run it and the problem re-appears, just do this and don't install it (you can also check to forget about the update). Girish
Asking you to re-download SP2? Did it install properly? Right-click My Computer > Properties > and check if it shows up as Service Pack 2.

Slamman
I'll add here a situation I encountered on my laptops, being portable and all... I was going to Dell's Support site for drivers, when I hit download, Windows prompted me without warning that it needed Microsoft NET 3.5 Service Pack 1, and I wonder, is this made part of normal Service Packs or are they going to prompt this on virtually any machine without it? .NET is part of the programming 'subroutines', I assume are like Dynamic Direct Links to aid programming done in an online environment, like Sun Micro's JAVA. The Wiki definition I found confusing for the laymen to understand. (DDLs in Windows are short programming algorithms used for common tasks so they can be used in various manners rather then written into any code for a specific task. I think what NET does is negate the factors of individual machines so the Internet based code runs efficiently, but it still must be added to Windows' OS. I think what NET does is negate the factors of individual machines so the Internet based code runs efficiently, but it still must be added to Windows' OS. This is one of the main reason XP machines crash. Let's say you download a program that requires Microsoft framework 2.0 (for the sake of argument) for example Paint.net, OK however Windows Update will download Microsoft frame work 3.0 or 3.5 and overlook that you already have a version of framework running. OK so the minute you try to run Paint.net the program will crash or you will get Windows Explorer right -click error or freezes up. Don't allow Windows Update to upgrade your framework until you have uninstall the old. By going to your control panel-add/remove, check to see how many frameworks you have installed if their are two remove the oldest. You don't not need different versions for every program that requires runtime management. A program like Paint.net will work find with the latest version and so will others. Slamman
Like Windows 2000 in the Add Remove control panel, there are likely a literal DOZEN or more add in module updates for security, and if only one could just replace all those files with a Service Pack, when available... A lot smoother, but still more work then the average user who buys into the Mac vs PC ads, will know how to do. I mean, saw one of those ads tonight where viruses and running smooth were the factors to pick a Mac over PC, but we all know the real story there! Tonight I was buying some discounted Ram at Microcenter, some real good older SODIMM deals, I'm getting what I can of those. Anywho, they have a large computer book section and I notice more books about Java then the Net Framework, however, there are at least two Microsoft Press books they carry, however, they jointly cover areas there .Net is used, and my description is slightly off, it seems MS introduced .NET version one in the year 2000, for Win2000 and NT so basically all future NTFS systems OS, however, the intent is directed at programmers and developers, and there is a tie in to some IBM employees who formed the company/coalition; SAP. Stands for Software Applications, Programs or something, my memory is fading on that, Anyway, that German company formed in 1973 or thereabouts and Microsoft worked closely with them in the 1980s. Bill Gates was basically working towards the MS empire during the 70s but these guys were groundbreaking some of the ideas for Network based coding, and the results were not commercial but for large companies, and still aimed at a business model by and large. Just from my reading, thought I'd bring that up... The books detail that .Net Runtime is large and seemingly complicated even to experts, and anyone downloading it can tell it's large! They suggest that it offers many uses due to it's size however, the book details ways to use these applications and software that works across hardware and across various browsers. Cross-platforming, they say. Just to add if you wish to question MS on their books, they offer an email as well; mspfeedback or something (MSP is MicrosoftPress) @microsoft.com Anyone recall the exact email? It maybe "info", It's slipped my mind now. Looking within Windows Programs, it appeared I had three folders for revisions to .Net on one laptop here, and the prior folders seemed to be empty...holding the mouse over them didn't do anything.
