New drivers from Nvidia - 190.62

All the latest drivers from NVIDIA f*cked up my GTA IV. A lot of stuttering, low frame rates and eventually the game would crash to the desktop.

The last driver from them f*cked my computer even more. Everytime I would play, the cooler of the graphics card would go to the maximum power, doing a lot of noise. That was OK, because it was a hot summer day (even though the temperature of the card was 60/62º). But then, even if I wasn't playing, the cooler would still be going at full power, making a lot of noise. The temperature was below 50º then, but it wouldn't stop. Rebooting the computer was the only solution.

I installed the old drivers (180.84) and all was back to normal. I won't ever update drivers for my card, it's over. NVIDIA's doing a sh*tty work. confused.gif

You know, I bought an Asus G51VX-RX05 from Best buy and it has an Nvidia 260M card that seemed to have a sh*t load of problems. There would be little displaced green pixels that would pop up out of no where, I kept getting an error that said nvlddmkm has stopped responind and has successfully recovered.

That driver is one that comes with the Nvidia driver packages, on top of that, check out the forums at Nvidia and see the problems people are having and not getting any response or support for.

I kept trying to install the newest driver for this particular series video card, but the application to install the driver kept giving me an error saying that I am running a 64 bit version of invidia uninstaller on a 32 bit system, when I had a 64 bit version of windows vista. Then after that message I got the complete opposite message after I clicked ok.

Nvidia doesn't seem to give any support to their customers.

Turns out there was something wrong with the graphics card installed on the laptop, so i took it back and got a refund.

I am going to get another laptop of the same brand on monday, so hoepfully this one isn;t a piece of crap like the last.

That sounds like the laptop's video card is bad. The green pixels popping up sound like artifacts and the driver not responding can also be caused by a bad video card.

Edit: Just saw your edit tounge.gif.

Yeah, it was a really good laptop for the price and its a shame that it had to crap out frsh out of the box. I got a few minutes of really good gameplay out of GTA IV and the graphics were almost all on high without a lot of noticeable loss of FPS.

I am definitely going to get this laptop again though, b/c both the processor and the video card is upgradable.

I still feel bad for the people on Nvidia forums that aren;t getting any support from the people at Nvidia.

That laptop is known to have unnecessarily high GPU temperatures into the 90+'s but apart from that it should game really well. If you want to play GTA IV on that, you should get one with a Q9000. Unless I am mistaken, the current model comes with a Core2Duo.

ATI makes much better drivers than Nvidia these days. Look at the Catalyst 9.8. Most people get massive boosts in performance, and the few people who do have problems with, the problems are usually minor. Nvidia drivers seem to have HUGE problems and barely no performance increase.

ATI 9.8 did help mine thank you very much lol.gif . Sorry but seriously though, this game can be fixed. I was reading about compilers today and technically this game can, be fixed. It would take a couple of months at the most.

I noticed the high temperature and read a lot about how that particular model has heat issues, thats why I will definitely get the Black tie warranty when I purchase this model a second time, luckily Best Buy has a 14 day return policy for defective computers, otherwise I would have voided the black tie warranty I bought the first time if it had kicked the bucket outside that 14 day window.

And I will be sure to upgrade the GPU and the processor as soon as funds are available and I have found the new machine to be reliable.

On a side note, I am so glad that notebooks are becoming more and more user friendly with the upgrades, I have a crappy old acer at the moment and dropped an extra Gig of RAM into it over a year ago and am now up to TWO gigs and that maxes it out.

Hope that notebooks become the new standard and Desktops just become a furniture item, but I doubt desktops will ever comepletely be done away with, there is something to be said about larger housings, I think that the limitations of machines are due to size more than the technology.

I am sure that there are things far beyond our consumer obtainanility.

I think I made words up and am quite drunk ATM. Shifty41s_beerhatsmilie2.giframpage_ani.gifalien.gifsleepy.gif

With my 8800Ultra i had problems with newer drivers. Lagging and crashes.

But since i got a GTX285 the new drivers is working perfect.

Not one single crash or problem with GTA4!

GTA4 requires ALOT!

Running on Vista 64.

Lollercoaster

nVidia only releases crappy drivers...their software department must be full of idiots.

They make good GFX cards, but the drivers suck so much it's not even fun.

All the newest drivers do, is cause overheating problems, stuttering problems and other issues.

The problem with upgrading the GPU in that model is the poor design of the cooling system and the heatsink. If you upgraded to a better more powerful GPU in the future, you might get worse temperatures.

I have exactly the same GPU in my gaming laptop but it idles at 40C and maxes out at 78C for example. They have even down clocked the GPU slightly in that model yet it still runs at such a high temperature.

However, I don't know if there is any real evidence that shows whether running at those temperatures compared to the ones mine runs at significantly affect its life span in a negative way. It is more an assumption that cooler temperatures will increase the lifespan.
