GTA IV crashes/freezes at the beginning

I installed GTA IV and applied patch 1.0.4.0. Unfortunately, the game crashes all the time. Sometimes I can start the first mission and play for about a minute, sometimes it already freezes while loading the first mission.

The game also freezes when trying to do a benchmark test.

I then reinstalled the game and tried to play it without applying any patch. It didn’t work. I tried patch 1.0.3.0, but it didn’t make things better.

My specs:

- Intel Core 2 Duo E6750

- Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 (rev 1.0), latest BIOS F14

- 4 GB RAM

- 512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4850 (latest drivers: Catalyst 9.8)

- Windows XP Prof. SP3 (with latest updates)

I also installed the latest drivers available on http://www.gigabyte.de/.

Does anybody have an idea, why I can’t get the game to work? I’ve tried it for hours. What else could I try?

have you tried -memrestrict?

only reason why it happens:

- 512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4850 (latest drivers: Catalyst 9.8)

I have the same graphic card and same drivers. This should not be happening. Try the -memrestrict command as suggested in the pinned topic. If you're using any other commandlines, get rid of them. Also, defragging your hard drive would be a good idea.

Also, try deleting all files from the Settings folder. More info here.

As a last stop measure, try running the game with Xliveless.

Let us know if it helps.

Thanks. I tried -memrestrict, but then the game already crashed while starting. But I'm gonna try it again.

By the way, I don't think that the only reason ist my HD 4850. I installed a Radeon X1950XT (Catalyst 9.3) and had the same problem.

I'm gonna try that. Thanks!

I tried everything you suggested. But the problem still occurs.

Since Thursday I've tried to get this f*cking game to work. Driver updates, bios update, commandline.txt etc... nothing actually helped. Damn!

Any ideas?

  • 8 months later...

Sorry for pushing the thread. But I finally solved the problem. It may be interesting that it had nothing to do with GTA IV itself. The crashes/freezers were caused by the service "ati smart" which comes with the ATI display drivers. I disabled the service and now everything works fine for me.

You should find it on the services list.

Open command prompt, enter "services.msc", find ATI smart on the list, double click the entry and set startup type to disabled.

Maybe you have installed the ATI display driver only? I guess ATI SMART comes with the CCC package.
