Rebel
Basically posted this in the over clocking topic but thought I'd get more help from a general topic since its quite odd. What I wrote in over clock topic >> I have a huge problem. I'm writing this on my mums laptop. Basically I reset to default my clocking speeds with RivaTuner, I then restarted my PC everything loaded up normally to the desktop with all my programmes, then all of a sudden the screen goes black. I've tried starting the PC from the last known good configuration after I pressed F8. Is there something I can do to get my PC working again? Because last time my PC would go blank on me after startup it turned out to be the motherboard that had been shot. And I only got the recent motherboard well under 3 months ago. Edit - Just reset the BIOS within the startup, everything still loaded up to the desktop, got a message saying I needed to re install my soundMax to work...but still went to the black screen. ^^ From then I took out the graphics card, and put it back in, I also cleaned the RAM sticks and put them back in. Girish then told me to start it up in VGA mode (Not a clue what that means) and so I did and it actually worked..the PC is up and running. I then went to reinstall my ATI driver the 9.8 one and everything installed great, it needed to reboot so I let it, and then the same problem occurred..A BLACK f*ckING SCREEN. Turned the PC off, then again I went into VGA mode which the PC is up and running okay now, and I'm looking at my ATI Radeon HD 4670 properties and it says the driver I'm running is 8.6.40 which I presume isn't the newest driver (9.8) My CCC is giving me a warning saying that ''its not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter, please update your ATI graphics driver or enable your ATI adapter using the displays manager.'' I've not a clue on how to fix this issue and to be honest I don't even want to reboot the PC now without the 9.8 driver in just encase it does end up with a black screen after my desktop is loaded. Has anyone got some sort of clue as to what might be the actual issue with why it goes to a black screen after its loaded the desktop and some way to fix it. Edit - Just rebooted the PC with the 8.6.40 driver version of the card on there and didn't do anything else but a restart and it still went black on me after the desktop. anus
Seems like a driver conflict. First of all, download and install DriverSweeper. Now uninstall your drivers from "Add/Remove Programs", now restart your PC and boot up into "Safe Mode" (tap F8 when PC is booting up and select "Safe Mode" from the boot options menu). Now once you're in Windows, run DriverSweeper and check "ATI Display" and click "Clean". Now restart your PC and install the latest drivers and see if it still happens. Good luck ! Rebel
I'm going to be slow here and say that there's nothing in my Add/Remove programmes except ATI Display Driver (that has anything close to what you said) I'm taking it I should uninstall that, even though it just says display driver. anus
Yep, that's it. Uninstall that and follow the previous post .
Rebel
Hmm Safe mode doesn't load up as fast as it used to Either way it popped up with the Administrator user and then my user account on the windows thing, and since I'm the only user on the PC which makes me the Administrator anyway. Its cleaning now, so I'll carry on with the other steps after its done. Another thing though, it says that my SoundMAX has stopped working since I reset the BIOS and that to get it to work I'll need to reinstall it..one problem with that is the fact I don't have a disc for that thing since it was pre installed for the sound on the PC. Would googling the name and looking for a download just do the trick?
anus
Go to this page and select your operating system. Then go to "Audio" and download the latest version of the drivers . Oh and by the way, this black screen issue is very common with ATI cards. It's a problem with the drivers. Edited August 22, 2009 by Warlord. Rebel
Just installed 9.8 driver and it still gave me the black screen after the reboot.
anus
Okay try this, do the same thing you did before, uninstall the drivers and remember to run DriverSweeper in Safe Mode too. After all that, try installing the drivers that came with your video card (the CD that came with the video card). You know what, before you run DriverSweeper, uninstall RivaTuner from Add/Remove Programs too. It may be conflicting with the drivers. One other thing, is this just a completely black screen you see or do you see some sort of message on screen? Maybe an "Out of Frequency" error? Edited August 22, 2009 by Warlord. Rebel
Its just finding the new hardware with the disc in in the Wizard since it popped up. Just got a pop up saying 'The file ati2mtag.sys on ATI Tech Inc installation Disk Video is needed, type the path where the file is located and then click okay. It pops up with a file route in the copy files from area and whenever I click okay the same message just keeps on popping up. And it is just literally, everything on start up that loads on the desktop will load and then the screen will just go black without warning and nothing will pop up. anus
Is the file location set to the drive that the disc is in?
Rebel
I don't know I clicked cancel and then just booted up the CD drive and I'm installing it from the CD since it would be easier. It did just say that it was replacing an English (US) file with an unknown language file though, I'm kind of hoping that it is obviously another english file its swapping with. anus
Ah, was just going to edit my post and tell you to install with the ATI installer . Hope it goes well, post the results . Good luck !
Rebel
Its popped up telling me that the setup has found that the CCC is a more updated version than what the install would of put on, it says to install the older version I'd have to uninstall the newer version, would it actually matter if I didn't do that and just installed the card? anus
It's best to uninstall the newer version.
Rebel
Alright I'll uninstall and then run through the install again on the disc so it should install that CCC. I shall report back.
Rebel
Okay...The PC is up and running after that...well it hasn't given me the black screen. What do I do now? Just leave it alone with both the old CCC and the old drivers? Or do I install the 9.8 CCC & drivers, or shall I install like the second to new drivers before 9.8 just to see if it is indeed 9.8 that is messing up my PC? anus
Wait a minute, you were using the 9.8 drivers and not the 9.7 drivers? The 9.8 drivers are BETA, so yeah they could cause problems. No wonder you had issues. This is what I recommend, try and overclock with the old drivers and see if you don't have any issues. The previous overclocking errors could've been caused by the drivers. If you don't have issues, stick with the old drivers . Edited August 22, 2009 by Warlord.
Rebel
Warlord you linked me to the 9.8 driver so I just got the most recent one, I didn't know it was a BETA! I don't want to overclock now I've had this problem since its been a pain in the bloody ass. Could I just install the 9.8 drivers and then after a week or so could I maybe try and overclock then if needs be?
anus
My bad, those aren't BETA any more . But I guess you seem to be having trouble with the newer drivers. Try the 9.8 drivers, if you get the black screen problem, go to 9.7 and so on until you find the latest driver which does not cause the problem . Rebel
I only had a problem with the 9.8 driver since I had overclocked and then set back the clocks to default. I think I'll probably just install the 9.7 driver first and stick with it to see if it is indeed the 9.8 problem.
anus
Ah cool. Good to hear it's fixed .
Rebel
Yup its way fixed now since I just updated to 9.7 give it a month or so (or sooner depending on how my games run) I'll update to 9.8 I'd just like some PC time without problems right now Thanks again Warlord. SyphonPayne
Good thing you didn't fry your vid card overclocking it .
Rebel
I know I was lucky, that's why I'm a little scared to even bother clocking now since that incident still, I should go by the 'If it aint broken, don't fix it' way for now.
