Difficulty level?

Nearly every game we play nowadays has an option for the difficulty of the gameplay. This allows for greater challenge and replayability; as well as changing the whole perception of the gameplay sometimes.

For instance, in Crysis you can put the medium difficulty on and go guns blazing. But with the hardest difficulty, the game suddenly forces you to take cover in the jungle and use a stealthy, tactical approach. Imagine if GTA IV implemented this; going in against 15 people doesn't sound easy anymore.

Ofcourse, the difficulty level should not be implemented outside of the missions(unless the player wants to), so freeroam wouldn't be too annoying.

This, paired with new AI for the police, would totally rock my world. How about you?

I hate difficulty levels, since I am always tempted to do the easiest one and be done with it.

And I find it really doesn't suit open ended games like GTA and the like. It feels more that it suits FPS or RPG more then a game like GTA

I like difficulty levels. It kept me playing Bioshock for about twice as long as I would have otherwise.

With GTAIV, after playing it once I replayed just using the pistol. It was that easy. I usually suck at GTA races (The Driver in Vice City) but I blew through them in GTAIV. If it's too easy for me, it's too easy for everybody.

SR2 had difficulty levels, but I don't think that's for GTA. I wouldn't mind the next game being a little tougher than GTA IV (which overall was easy in almost every mission), but I don't really like things to be too much of a challenge or a chore to beat. GTA III was pretty difficult when some asshole has a shotgun and runs up to your vehicle or when some vehicles can't even make a slight turn without tipping over (it's still a good game though).

I don't think GTA will feature difficulty levels. In all previous GTAs, it uses progressive difficulty, whereas the longer you play the game, the harder it gets. It is still in use in IV, so I doubt R* will change on the next GTA.

I Dont think its needed. I think the levels getting harder as you advance system is good.

We need difficulties. GTA IV was far too easy.

That's what I mean. If you think it's too hard, lower the difficulty. If it's too easy(like in GTA IV) take it up a notch. If you don't like difficulty levels, simply put it on normal.

Besides, the levels getting harder as you progress isn't all that great. All they do is throw more enemies at you.

The reason I want this is because different people play the game differently. A 7 year old might not like to strategize and prefer to run and gun, while a solid gamer might love the challenge of remaining stealthy and planning every move.

I hate difficulty levels, since I am always tempted to do the easiest one and be done with it.

Are you forcing yourself to play video games or something?

EDIT: Also, I didn't ask if you thought it would be in the game, I asked whether you'd like the feature or not.

I would like to meet the parents of a 7 year old GTA IV player.

You don't meet enough of them on Live?

I LOL'd. biggrin.gif

I think if Rockstar keep the way it is, but increasing difficulty a little, we'd have the perfect game.

major underscore

Yes, I like the idea of different difficulty settings. icon14.gif If you don't want it, don't change it from the default setting.

Having recently played through Fallout 3 on the default setting I realized how easy the game became once you learned how to play it effectively. The game lasted a whole lot longer when I increased the difficulty setting to Very Hard. It practically became a different game, much like what Drunk Russian 9 wrote about Crysis, as it forces you to think about the tactics used rather than just stupidly storming into rooms and taking everyone out with little or no damage to the protagonist.

I think that a key to successfully implementing a difficulty setting in this kind of game would be that the player can always change the setting during a game and not just at the start of the game.

I totally agree with this. The first missions are always the ones that introduce you to the game, and then the latter missions are always the hardest and require the most thought.

Why do you think one excludes the other?

^This.^

Also, imagine all the extra programming etc... they will virtually need to make the whole game's AI, bullet and NPC physics over three times or more, so to have one for every difficulty level. This is not possile for a game which already pushes disk space to the limit unless really great previous features will be toned down or removed completely.

They should make it more realistically difficult - like in Operation Flashpoint where I take routinely over an hour to complete a single mission. In terms of firefights, I'd rather have it so you spend a lot longer to kill a single enemy in a shootout rather that just have ridiculous amount of enemies where you spend at most 20 second to kill a single one, like in GTA4.

Throughout the game, about no more than 4-5 enemies for every shootout mission (which in turn wont make up more than some 25% of overall missions), with spending some 5 minutes or more on every enemy, who have as much health - or more - than yourself, and very high AI - like fleeing when wounded/outgunned, calling for backup and using many different weapons and clever, complex tactics. inlove.gif

Not being up my own ass or anything, but I have practically completed every single GTA, I've been playing since the first one, I would do it on hard mode first time without attempting easy or normal.

I don't really think difficulty levels suit sandbox games. I like it the way it is.

I didn't even really notice the difficulty levels in SR2. I started a new game on Hardcore, and I found it to be just as easy as on Casual. Kind of pointless really.

Then again SR2 isn't exactly what you call a quality game, is it. Play Halo on legendary lol. Then tell me that difficulty levels are pointless.

@xTRLx: same here. I love the challenge.

the latter missions are always the hardest and require the most thought.

Quite the contrary for me, once I know how Niko behaves I can beat those levels without thinking twice. As I had done with the last levels. The hardest level, IMO, was the boat dock raid with Packy.

It really pisses me off when people say that they are really good at the game. Think about it, you can't actually be bad at it. Surely some missions are harder than others, but in all honesty, once you've done a few missions, you've mastered it. Difficulty levels are a must.
