How Do you Clean your monitor?

Find a cloth and wipe it down. There are some screen cleaners out there, but I find a soft cloth cleans a screen the best.

Buy a specific cloth, that will suck the dust into it. I'm using that kind of things, they're pretty good. And never use water. I tried using water on my old monitor. Believe me, you don't like the result.

I (well, my mom) uses a half water half rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol solution. It actually works pretty well on the LCD TVs and monitors.

Some cotton and 100% isopropyl alcohol would do. That's how I clean my monitor (and pretty much all my PC stuff tounge.gif).

I wouldn't advise isopropyl for screens, it has the potential to knacker them. I don't clean my desktop monitor much saying as it's matte and no dirt or finger marks show up, but I have to clean my laptop LCD regularly, damn gloss. I just use a very very slightly damp microfibre cloth, it works wonders. For the body though I do use 50/50 isopropyl and water, but you might wanna be careful with it, it can damage your nervous system if you inhale too much.

CRT:

Window cleaner or alcohol and a nice wash cloth, let it air dry.

LCD:

Damp, warm wash cloth, maybe with a little bit of soap in it. Wipe up the suds, then air dry.

Leave them off for both. It's easier to see the mess on a black screen anyway.

Big rule of thumb is not to use a solvent on the LCD unless it has a glass screen. Alcohol is very corrosive to plastic, so you may damage your screen or seriously reduce its longevity if you use a strong solvent to clean it.

I sometimes use rubbing alcohol with a micro fiber cloth or I'll use Contact lens cleaning solution, works pretty well and doesn't leave streak marks. As for the cabinet, I'll use a damp cloth with a pea size of (Palmolive Anti-bacterial) dish washing soap, leaves it shiny, germ, greasy free and squeaky clean. I do the same with keyboards and mice. Eating chips while surfing makes the keys nasty and sticky.

First use a can of compressed air to remove what ever is loose and that may end up scratching the screen later.

Next use a clean dry micro-fiber cloth and do just a simple wipe with no pressure

If it's still not clean enough, use a second lightly damp clean micro-fiber cloth, damp using distilled water if possible, followed by bottle water or some other form of filtered water, try to stay away from tab water. Again don't apply too much pressure. Follow it with a clean dry micro-fiber cloth.

For really hard to remove spots, get a product made for cleaning LCD screens (I would think that a camera lens cleaner could work too). Lightly damp a clean micro-fiber cloth and wipe and follow with a clean dry micro-fiber.

It's suggested to first test the cleaning solution in a part of the screen that's not as noticeable before hand in case there is there some bad reactions.

This is good for monitors, LCD and CRT, as well as TVs of any kind.

I just use standard issue window polish. Spray it on there and wipe it down. It does wonders.

I bought some cheap LCD wet wipes.

It says on the tube.

Anti static, non smear, alcohol free, low lint cloth. There not bad for £1

TO be honest, you've really got to try to f*ck up your monitor. I had to laugh at the distilled water solution - that's just too much.

Just take care not to scratch it, and don't use copious amounts of whatever fluid you choose. While I probably wouldn't use windex on my work monitor (the $1800 beast) it's more from superstition than any actual danger.

Furthermore, I don't have to clean it all that often. I dust maybe once a month, clean maybe every three months. The thing sees more corrosion from oxygen than it ever will from alcohol.

Obviously you should avoid using such things on a laptop, because odds are you're cleaning that a lot more often.

Howso? I've been doing it on my old 19" Samsung LCD for years, with a nice and clean panel as the only result.

Spraying directly only the screen likely to cause some of it seep behind the screen and get to something electrical which could end very badly. The chemicals in the cleaner itself can discolor the screen, also there is usually an anti-glare coating that can be damaged but said chemicals.

@Otter

You might laugh at the idea of using distilled water but you talk to people that actually know what they are talking about when it comes to HDTVs and they will tell you the same thing. And no I don't mean the bone heads at stores since all they know is enough is to trick you into buying their TVs at their prices (mostly BestBuy).

With the cloth which came with it, to get the dust off.

Unfortunatly no cloth came with the monitor

I think the Monster cleaning solution comes with a cloth.

The only real destruction I've seen to monitors or HDTVs is when people spray stuff right onto the screen - usually too much stuff, then it drips down the screen and is sucked up behind the panel. This really f*cks up the display.

I've never seen a screen worn down by corrosion. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've still not seen it.

Hey, guys, my question is probably answered in this topic, but I have two cleaners in my closet. One is BASF Fantastic Clean Screen which is meant for glass surfaces. Then there is a Foam Cleaner - Anti-static foam cleaner, which just says spray onto surface. I think my monitor (ViewSonic VP171b) hasn't got glass, judging by the sound, so I probably can't use the BASF cleaner. But is the Foam Cleaner safe to use? I remember my dad cleaning keyboards with it and his laptop's screen (which was glass, because it has cracked in a glass-cracking way), but I don't know about my monitor. Any help?

If it's the Fellowes brand you're talking about then it's completely safe I have use it before and it leaves the screen looking pretty good, leaves a mirror finish look on glass icon14.gif

It's works well on any surface like keyboards- monitor glass/ cabinets- computer cases etc, etc.

sometimes i use my t-shirt for dust. i can't seem to find my little micro fiber cloth thingy, as it would be easier because it's clean and really gets the dust as well a smudges.

Regular glass cleaner and cheap ass paper towels have always worked for me and my LCD without issue.

I really recommend aquarium glass/plastic polish (all out at the moment). Aside from the cleaning you get with it you also get the added dust prevention bonus. You can also outright sneeze on your monitor and then wipe it off without having to clean the whole kit-n-kabodle again

If you can, remove the bezel to do a proper cleaning, with laptops that is obviously the way to go. Use GlassPlus or Windex with caution over it's chemical amount! Mix with water perhaps or use minimal amounts

supermortalhuman

you need only a lint free cloth and water - that's all you need.

Do NOT use windex on an LCD.

How many times do we need a topic that asks how to clean a monitor and how many times does everyone need to be told...

DO NOT USE GLASS CLEANER TO CLEAN YOUR MONITOR!!
