I saw someone say in another thread "It wasn't worth it for them" (rockstar) but what is that mean to mean?

If there is no AA then someone please explain why there wasn't because when I search it just lists useless bla bla that doesn't answer the question.

wow, nobody knew what AA is? sad....

yes, they use AA on certain textures, but most of it is good enough not to need it.

I know what anti-alaising is but not the Initials AA. It's like say you know what RnB is but you don't know it stands for rythem and Blues sly.gif

How many times does this have to be said, neither consoles have AA, the Xbox 360 doesn't have AA nor does the PS3 have AA in GTA 4. The consoles don't have AA if the consoles had AA then Rockstar wouldn't have had to inflict that god awful Vaseline blur on everyone.

The horrible Vaseline blur which thankfully us PC owners can turn off is YOUR AA that is the only effect that blurs the jaggies in the game.

Why do people love AA so much? It lags and it's so worth the sacrifice for speed.

I thought RnB stood for Rap and Beat. suicidal.gif

I thought AA stood for Auto-Aim. suicidal.gifsuicidal.gif

Now I really feel stupid.

To be fair, those with high end machines that max out AA in the games that support it get the benefit of AA with very, very minimal decrease in performance. AA hammering frame rates is limited to poorly coded games and budget cards (namly cards from several years ago, most newer cards can max AA with little to no performance hit).

As charlie said, thank the gaming gods that PC GTA4 has the ability to disable the blur.

And us console gamers have to deal with the crappy blur. Once you go fast enough, you can't see **** around you because of the damn motion blur.

I don't get much blur. tounge2.gif

**EDIT** Okay, I do. But it's awesome.

xbox 360 version has 2x aa since it has its own dedicated hardware for anti aliasing but still has the blur filter. ps3 version has a harsher version of the blur filter, which is why on other game forums you'll see ps3 owners complaining of a blurry screen.

The Xbox 360 does NOT have 2xAA this is a complete and utter myth that will not die. The Deferred lighting that GTA 4 uses makes it IMPOSSIBLE for the Xbox 360 to have AA. A PC with a Directx 10 card could do it if the game was re-written to use Dx10 but the Xbox which uses a slight variant of Dx9 which does not have the technical ability to use AA with Deferred lighting.

The reason why the PS3 version is "slightly" blurrier is down to resolution. The 360 renders the game at 1280 x 720, the PS3 renders the game at 1140 x 640 and then upscales to 1280 x 720 this will naturally result in a blurrier look on the PS3, it has nothing to do with AA.

you know that you can't have right. you don't work at rockstar + consoles can handle AA but they choose away it sometimes.

EDIT: gta iv can handle up to 2x/4x aa

Hey, just to post in this thread, the 360 version doesn't have AA, the Xbox 360 CAn handle AA but Rockstar chose to leave it out. Here's a quote from Richard Leadbetter who analysed the game on both the PS3 and 360 and during the graphic face off here is what he had to say.

Technically speaking, Xbox 360 really should be winning this contest hands-down, but bizarrely, it doesn't. There's support for proper hardware-assisted anti-aliasing, eliminating a great deal of the jagginess of the PlayStation 3 version, plus it's running at full-fat 720p. However, Rockstar has introduced a 360-specific post-processing effect that dithers just about every texture on-screen. It's an effect not present at all on the PS3 version and serves to introduce an oil-painting-like effect to the overall look of the game, particularly on background objects. Unfortunately, it also seems to actively distort the edges of detail in the textures and occasionally looks really ugly.

So it was Rockstars choice to leave AA out of the 360 version and instead introduce the blur filter.

No I don't work for Rockstar but I have been involved with computers for 20 years and I have an ability to read and digest information. I know for a fact Rockstar didn't "choose" to leave AA out. They did it because the 360 cannot do AA with deferred lighting/rendering. If GTA 4 could "handle" 2xAA/4xAA don't you think we would have it on the PC ? We don't have it on the PC because GTA 4 is a Dx9 game and Dx9 cannot do Deferred lighting with AA.

Now guess what your Xbox 360 uses ? that's right it uses a slightly modified version of Dx9 wow.gif shock horror since the Xbox 360 uses Dx9 it means it is IMPOSSIBLE for it to use Deferred rendering/lighting and AA. Seriously educate yourself and look it up sarcasm.gif

I really don't know how much simpler I can make this. The Xbox 360 uses Dx9, it is impossible to use AA with Deferred Rendering in Dx9 thus it is impossible for the Xbox 360 to have 2xAA.

so gta iv (PC) can't use anti aliasing even if you turn it on nvidia control panel?

and the console have aa? because someone in this topic said it is ..

so Im confused who have the better graphics...

facedesk.giffacedesk.gif How many different ways do I have to say this ? NO VERSION OF GTA 4 has AA. The PS3 does not have AA, the 360 does not have AA and the PC does not have AA. Anyone that thinks the 360 does have AA is seriously misinformed technically and should brush up on their knowledge. Even if you try and force AA on via the nvidia control panel you still won't get AA because Dx9 cannot do AA with deferred rendering/lighting.

As for which version is graphically superior, if you have a decent PC then it is quite obviously the PC since there are options to make the graphics BETTER than the console version. I play GTA 4 on my PC at 5 x the settings the console use and at a res of 1680 x 1050.

Ahh, read again, I said the 360 can handle AA, I didn't say GTA4 could handle AA, I just said Rockstar left out AA and went for the blur filter, I gave no reason to imply that GTA4 on the 360 can handle AA in it's current state. smile.gif Stop being so quick to slate consoles with your fanboyism, I know the 360 uses an altered form of DX9 buddy. smile.gif

How am I slating consoles ? the Xbox 360 cannot do GTA 4 with AA, neither can a PC with a Dx9 card. It is impossible technically for the 360 or a Dx9 pc to do AA with deferred lighting/rendering. Why do you find this well known FACT so hard to digest ? I am wondering if it is you that is showing your fanboy colours here.

The only difference between Dx9 on the xbox and Dx9 on the PC is the xbox version uses a slight alteration to enable it to use the unified memory in the console. On the PC Dx9 is designed to work with system and graphics ram. The Xbox 360 just has one pool of ram so it was adapted to make use of that. There was certainly no provision in Dx9 to do AA with Deferred rendering. You can believe all you like but it is impossible for the 360 to do AA with a game that uses deferred rendering.

Again, Charlie, READ, where have I said GTA4 CAN handle AA? I haven't, you're saying the Xbox 360 can not do AA, when the console can, you should be correctly saying that the Xbox 360 can not do AA with GTA4 in its current state, which is true, DX9 has a bit of a problem working with both D-Lighting and AA. You're just not reading my posts and lumping me together with all the other idiots when sorry buddy but I know what I'm talking about too.

Do me a favour and read my posts next time before you reply to me like I'm a retard. wink.gif
