uk_john
...To re-do missions is only pain in the ass thing in GTA IV regarding gameplay as far as I am concerned. Sure, the game gives you a chance to re-play the mission immediately to 'save time', but what time do you save? The cut-scene? Because they still expect you to drive across town (sometimes) to get back to the location of the mission! So unless you do it first time, the second and subsequent times are a total pain! If you have to take someone to the mission location with you, even they say, in so many words, that they have nothing to talk about any more and just want to listen to the radio! It is so annoying, even if it's just the third time, because you just want to re-try the mission, not the driving again! I was so fed up with the building site/mafia quest for X that I just walked away from it until he complained on the phone that I was ignoring him! This is why I like old fashioned RPG's, like Daggerfall for example, that allow you to fail a quest and just carry on, with only fame being hurt. uk_john
Cos I am playing the PC version?!? And I don;t know if the consoles are the same as I have never owned/played on a console in my life. So for all I know you can hit 'D' to get to the proper mission start. PacoGTA4
get over it dude, this is GTA IV and every other GTA that had existed it was the same way, you lose, all the way back again, this is not a RPG. But I concur that is a pain in the ass (only sometimes)
manofpeace
The long drive in The Snow Storm actually helped me a bit. First of all, it gave me time to calm down after screaming from bullsh*t deaths, but it let the sun come up for what would have been a night mission. I haven't failed many missions besides that one multiple times yet, so it's not much of a big deal to have to drive across town for me.

oc student
Yeah but the replay feature was in barely 1 % of the missions.
CryptReaperDorian
Luckily, GTA IV has a new feature (used in only a couple of missions in GTA VC) called a taxi skip trip. Get in a taxi as a passenger and, choose destination, and press the button/key that it informs to you to skip the trip. One of the most useful features in GTA IV along with the cover system. If you also have Roman's taxi ability unlocked you can get free rides from one of his guys.

Taxi is the best new feature in the game Romans taxi service is only good if you want to do drive bys its even better if you take dwaynes backup and the 2 of em join you in your driveby session
uk_john
Well, I still say the problem with missions, like The Snow Storm, for example, is not having to try 7 times, it's having to drive for 10 minutes to get there 7 times!!!! Rockstar have the cheek to send you a message saying do you want to try again, but don't tell you 'we ain't going to give you back the ammo you have used' and they say in all the reviews that it saves time, but what time? You can bypass the movie part anyway, and that's all it's saving you! So I don;t know why they bothered to put that re-play mission option in! All you save is one space bar hit (to bypass the movie) and you lose any ammo you spent trying the mission previously!

LakeGTA
Haha..you sound maddd. Only thing that bugs me is..I always have to go and buy armour again..but I suppose if they just re-gave it to you it'd be techinally cheating. I hate doing missions at night..so I like having the taxi to get me there..by the time I'm there the sun would be up.

That way I have all my ammo and health I had before starting the mission. The taxi feature is great in this game.
TonyClifton
I take a taxi if the mission start is a long ways off, unless I want to practise some driving or I have to use a particular vehicle. But the mission with Phil Bell, (Catch The Wave) is the one where you have to drive alot, whether you like it or not. It is the one mission I got really pee'd off with if I failed, even over the end mission. But, as it is the only one, I don't think that's so bad. Sometimes I just let the taxi ride go on, because it is funny watching how bad the drivers are, and you can ask them to change the radio station for you too. uk_john
Well. I always get annoyed a little more when the hype overshadows reviews, meaning while in the past Mafia reviews did mention the having to drive to missions, in today's media no reviews mentioned this re-driving issue, but were quite happy to blandly say 'you can re-do missions, saving time'. Well, as I say the time you save is hitting the spacebar! I would rather sit through the movie again and be able to hit the spacebar to avoid the re-driving! Certainly it should be an option on the third and subsequent re-drives. when, if you have a passenger, they point out they have nothing to say and just want to listen to the music! At that point the game should offer a quick drive to mission! I do think they are pointing you toward using Roman's cab service, because often, when you come out of the 'mission movie' all the cars have disappeared! You sometime have to go hunt a car down to jack and at certain timeof day/night, there isn;t much traffic either! As to getting a yellow taxi, in many parts of Librty City they don;t come along very often! Certainly people have mentioned the 'throwaway' motorcycle helmet as breaking immersion, well I think the car you arrived at a mission start changing or disappearing after the mission movie is also immersion breaking! What's the point of stealing a certain type of car/motorcycle, because you think it would help in a mission, if you cannot guarantee it will be thre when you 'come out of 'the mission movie! As for the cars disappearing after the cut-scene,its never happened to me.It's always parked on the nearby road even if I had just drove into the marker. But if you died, I bet 9 times out of 10, you have to go back to the weapons dealer to get more ammo, assuming you have the money, so again, the time saved is very little. better autosaves would have been better, just before any major battle, or certainly giving you back the original ammo before the fight. Also having a 're-entry point' closer to the action! On some missions that happens if you are on your own, but if travelling with NPC's it always takes you back to their house! Let me drive when In want to drive, but this game is only a 50 hou game because it has 30 hours of forced driving and re-driving! If it was anything other than Rockstar and GTA it would be called 'padding'!
durian22
if you fail a mission, just reload the game, hop in a taxi to the gun store then hop in a taxi to the mission, easy. you can x out the journey and be back in a second or two. As long as you have a ton of money to do the mission 3-7 times! Each time using ammo, paying 1,000's for more + the taxi rides to and fro........ Still good have been done better and still about padding the game out from a 30 to 50 hour game IMO
durian22
you dont need a ton of money, and like i said, if you reload the game after u fail a mission, it hasnt cost you anything cos it only saves after you complete the missions, thus u dont lose your money except for the one mission where you manage to complete it, and you get paid after many missions so no loss at all.
