GentlemanSquid
6 +/- years ago my brother had his car stolen, the police found it a week later burnt out. My brother wanted to know if the registration plate is available to buy, so I looked at MYCARCHECK but i didn't subscribe as it said the car was not on their database, I thought that must a good thing, one step closer to getting the plate, but when i went on the website http://www.newreg.co.uk/ it said the plate was not available. This is were I am confused, does the plate exist or doesn't it? Is there other website that are more reliable?
JayC
I'm fairly sure we don't reissue plates in the UK unless it was already a personalised registration.

You have the same knickname as a turkish mate of mine. In the UK, if a reg plate holds some sentimental value and isn't personalised then you can "rent" it from the DVLA. If it's a personal reg plate and the car is destroyed, then the plate is still technically "rented" though you would have to pay a fee to transfer it onto another car. There are rules surrounding it but I can't remember them all.

stretch.
You would have to still hold the v5 and the log book to get it transferred. But assuming there was an insurance pay out, you're legally not the owner.

But assuming there was an insurance pay out, you're legally not the owner. Did we establish whether it was a personal plate or otherwise? If it is personal, then he would still technically be the owner. But your right, the insurance company would be owner of the plate until the vehicle is disposed of, then it returns to being property of the DVLA, who may or may no reissue it.
