manofpeace
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/21/world/am...s/21mexico.html MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico enacted a controversial law on Thursday decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs while encouraging government-financed treatment for drug dependency free of charge. The law sets out maximum “personal use” amounts for drugs, also including LSD and methamphetamine. People detained with those quantities will no longer face criminal prosecution; the law goes into effect on Friday. Anyone caught with drug amounts under the personal-use limit will be encouraged to seek treatment, and for those caught a third time treatment is mandatory — although no penalties for noncompliance are specified. Mexican authorities said the change only recognized the longstanding practice here of not prosecuting people caught with small amounts of drugs. The maximum amount of marijuana considered to be for “personal use” under the new law is 5 grams — the equivalent of about four marijuana cigarettes. Other limits are half a gram of cocaine, 50 milligrams of heroin, 40 milligrams for methamphetamine and 0.015 milligrams of LSD. President Felipe Calderón waited months before approving the law. I, personally, think this is is more of a way to free up officers and jail cells for the big time dealers. I guess massive celebration is being had by some people down there. Seachmall
The president of Mexico has been pressuring Obama to do the same thing and while I doubt he will this will add to the pressure. Obama now has 2 options, the Reagan Route or the Relaxation Route. I doubt it will be the former. I personally think it's the best thing Mexico can do given their current situation, but it's the last thing Obama needs on his desk.

True, Think how big "Spring break" will become down there. Borders from Arizona, Cali and Texas will bring in enough income to the nearby Mexican Cities like Nogales,Tijuana and Juarez It's just what Mexican resorts needs in spite of the recent warnings travel agencies issued this past spring over concerns of drug cartel violence in the nearby border cities. If this goes well, I hope the U.S. can see this as an example, although other countries like Spain and Portugal have similar policies that have proven to be effective. trip
They had to recoup the tourism after the swin flew thing. That model has been talked about for years now. It is nice to see a country implementing it. weed has been decriminalized where i live to a 1/2oz. it's not legal, and if you are caught with 1/2oz or under they just take it and write you a ticket - there really is no need to spend tax dollars keeping a pot smoke(or most recreational drug users) behind bars. trip
If only the US would make a step forward as well. Mexico has even prostitution legalized. there is always reno,nv for legalized prostitution. it would be up to the individual states here. there have been a few that got close if you don't count alaska. california was soooooo close, but i fear that last wild fire is going to add more of a damper to it's chances of passing since it looks like a mexican cartel(go figure) started it by torching a weed field. you have to admit it would be odd if it took a failing economy to see the legalization of some recreational drugs. im not about to look it up but for some reason i think weed isn't legal in alaska anymore. prop happened during sara palin's term My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens
