What do you think that Rockstar thinks about GTA

What do you think that Rockstar thinks about GTA Modding. I think that they're pissed off because IV is fully moddable now smile.gif

Why the hell would they be pissed off if IV is fully moddable?

Let's face it. If you mean pissed off because of the DLC. I doubt you'll see anyone make a mod of a DLC's caliber purely because they do not have the resources, for the sound recording, effects etc. So I don't think Rockstar would think of it as a threat at all.

I think they are pissed. They changed formats and stuff so our tools no longer work. Even different non modding mechanisms were added.I find it amazing how they don't like people modding, yet they look at the interesting mods that people make. And just gotta add: They shouldn't be pissed. The only reason GTA SA sold like mad was because of the mods for PC.

Rockstar Toronto is pissed, sure. Rockstar North probably doesn't give a damn. They supported modding for all the past GTAs, even after Hot Coffee (they only released the patch for legal reasons).

And we all know how much we love Toronto, after the wonderful port they gave us.

They don't really care, I think. But they actually posted links to sites that mod San Andreas on the SA official website.

Rockstar North probably supports modding, just not publicly. The problem is with multiplayer. It takes a long time to make a mod-proof game and mods do ruin the fun most of the time. So it's tough to say now. I don't know other studios much so I have nothing there to say. And how did Toronto did a bad job with the port? Isn't it awesome to have a video editor and graphical options that you can set?

The Unvirginiser

I don't see why they would be, surely it would just increase their sales, if anything?

Yea, a game that doesn't block modding can increase sales but is it worth supporting it? Is it cheaper to have support from volunteers (GTAForums) or have a team of people working all hours to support modding?

I remember the days when GTA SA was about to come out for the PC, and the R* website stated that modding would be officially supported and would also allow players to create their own worlds within the game. I don't remember them releasing an SDK or Max scripts.

I still have a screencap somewhere too. R* are just lying f*cks.

yeah,I also remember reading that,heh.

I see nothing wrong with modding GTAIV,its not like someone made A "lost and the damned" before R*

Technically, they just said we're allowed to, not that they're releasing tools to.

If you check the official site for the PC version now, what Joe said makes a lot of sense.

"Player Modifications support, giving PC gamers the opportunity to create their own world within San Andreas. Please note this feature may be limited in the second edition v2.0 release"

This "feature" had been limited in v2, which is true. So their definition of "support" is allowing the game to be modded.

I don't think they changed formats to prevent modding, well maybe they did in case of MP moding, but new formats got some new information such as shaders, bump maps and everything what wasn't possible with old formats.

@DemonKing: There isn't full modding yet, there are things left to do for others be able to ccreate whle different maps on RAGE.

What Space said makes sense. It's like a program supporting a file type to be used.

For changing the files, its to support more stuff, its the same as going from .mp3 to .flac, not everything supports FLAC, but FLAC is uncompressed, etc and better than MP3.

How are they supporting mods? By blocking them in V2? They didn't release a single tool or any documentation that would benefit the modding scene. That's just trying to milk their fans by giving them false hope.

It's the same situation with IV, they're not sh*tting their pants about it, but they're not helping either. I mean, Valve is incredible at fan support, why cant R* be too? If it's about people making offensive mods (e.g. nude and etc...) then the same thing has been done to Valve games and no one complained.

It's just really sad, because IV could use some mod support to liven up the rather dull game that it is, especially with the new engine being a potential sandbox.

We have mods now and they're super great. All the work we did for free and Rockstar saves time and money. It has been like this since III and I don't think they'll be publicly supporting mods anytime soon. Any game can have the developers support mods for games but why don't they? I don't know much about the gaming industry so I don't know about that.

I posted a topic full of all sorts of propaganda and tones to get people to show rockstar we love modding and even if max payne modding got cut fast, they just need to do little things. The turnout was good, and they must have heard us because it's easier now:

Well, they may not be keen to unofficially support it (that means you get no tech support and they get no liability, like Max Payne or any other modding tools), but they SEEM to have begun to make things easier because I can mod without issues.

I think there are problems modding gta.dat in v1.0.4.0, but you can mod most things with complete ease now - right out of the box. You don't need magik IV or anything like that, it just works. Exactly WHAT works and what doesn't, I'm not sure, and more focused on preparing than modding anyway, while currently targeting SA (which can do much more than the PS2 allowed at the time) and keeping my eye on total-convertability of IV knowing it would be awesome to later port and add normal maps etc to the new engine, but keeping in mind that it isn't realistic until A: they integrate it and embrace their true PC crowd (why give us a camera and make us see that the best and most intriguing videos come from mods) or B: they stop updating it, which I don't want for some time, and when they do stop updating it, I want it to be open to modding with some tools to actually put more in liberty city.

It can apparently take more, and the episodic delivery platform is apparently awesome compared to MPACK of the old games (SA being the utilized by modding, I'm not sure how they did it in the other games, if it was there, or how the top down expansion episodes worked). Let alone making ones own game worlds within GTA that may lack all new voices and stories that must be read in text, but either way keep us on their game, you on their game, waiting for the next one, playing those and buying them when they come, then modding them.

Some of us just don't want to play other games. Some of us love a certain series and to mod it and we dont want to buy other games - we just wont, and we cant be made to. I buy other games, but really, I barely play them. GTA is already big, and when I play a game, it has so much to do that I don't need to play other games, I play other games once in a while and take them in, but I like doing things more than playing things, there is a lacking area which is quality of tools - they stopped evolving somewhere, some of the kinds of tools for the GTA games.

It would be awesome if they would just once and for all embrace their modding fans and maybe, you know, license some of our mods as games and deliver them over social club and steam and stuff... hold contests and sh*t...

You gave us social club and a camera. You gave us contests. Please. Give us modding tools and solve the issue of hobby modeler vs hobby programmer once and for all. Your engines - your workflows, which I'm sure are even better than ours as third-party modders, are the bridge in a gap that I have tried to leap and fell many times. I do NOT need to code to make a big world in GTA. Let us some tools foo >_<

Why it is important to study the DLC: If we can deliver mods in this fashion, we do NOT taint the singleplayer or multiplayer game AT ALL - thus we can deliver quality to their product, and never diminish it.
