Sauron
okie dokie, I currently have a external hard drive that is only compatible with Mac computers, now I wish to partition a part of the hard drive so that it is compatible with windows computers, my xbox and I have a dvd player that has a usb port (which is only compatible with fat32 i think). Therefore I am wondering whether partitioning the section with fat32 would that be compatible with all of the above and would I be able to access the mac files that are already on the hard drive and transfer them to that part of the partition. lastly, is there a way to do this without moving all the files off the hard drive, i was going to try iPartition but you kinda have to pay for it. so if anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. Saggy
Macs can use FAT32 and it's pretty much the de facto standard for most portable devices. Anyway, you can only resize your partition down to the amount of data you have on it, and you probably want to keep a little bit left over. Then simply make a partition in the unallocated space and format it with FAT32. Now, I'm assuming that the portable device is probably a HSF+ file system, because that's the default Mac file system. You can apparently resize that filesystem inside of Leopard now. http://www.creativetechs.com/iq/leopard_di...partitions.html If you can't find any way to make a partition and format it with that utility, once you've resized your HSF+ filesystem you can just use a real operating system Linux live cd of some sort and the "gparted" or "qtparted" applications. It's not very hard, and if you find yourself unable to figure out the Linux disk naming system, you can find tutorials on how to use each one of those. My advice, get a plain Ubuntu Live CD, and find a tutorial on "gparted". You can also use a tutorial pertaining to "qtparted" but keep in mind you'll need to use "gparted" on Ubuntu ( unless you want to install a bunch of crap for no reason, it's the same program with a different gui). That help at all? Or were you asking detailed instructions on how to partition?
