It seems that way looking back on it all,i mean no doubt what so ever it is a fantastic game..but was it worthy of all that hype and attention it got? because look at it like this...it`s nothing new is it? new graphics? great! new characters? great! ah but no new gameplay no new features,no new blah blah etc etc you get me?

it`s just i remember about 6 months before gta 4 got released(when it was just delayed) that magazines i used to buy for info(before i had internet) would say that IV is going to be free roaming to a new level...a masterpeice of a storyline..gripping etc

but for me it wasn`t like that.i feel(ashamedly) that saints row 2 was more of a sequal then IV.

of course this is my opinion and alot of you will think different so im sorry if this has been done before.

So was it worth the hype and all the 10s it got?

I personally think GTA IV will always be remembered as a legend of a game. When the first trailer came out, I couldn't sleep for days. I was absoloutely amazed at the graphics, the fact it looked like NYC, I always thought Niko looked like a badass. I even kept showing my mum the trailer. Hell, the day It came out, I ran all the way home from school just so I could play it when I got home. You may think I'm sad. But f*ck it, I'm one of GTA's biggest fans. And proud of it. I'm older now though, so If a new one came out I wouldnt be as hyped about it. To be honest, It has made history. In my opinion, It is the first actual next gen game ever made. Saints row 2 was a sequel, GTA IV, although being a sequel, only felt different because it was for a completely new console. Yeah there's a huge difference between San Andreas and IV, but IV is the next series up. For instance, nobody complained about the difference between gta 2 and gta 3, because it was such a step forward. Once the next GTA comes out, I reckon most people will have gotten used to the next-gen feeling of it. One step closer to real life every game.

You won't be as hyped, because you're older now? It's only been 1 year tounge.gif

But I have to agree with you on all your points either way xTRLx smile.gif

Personally , before I bought my Xbox 360 , all my chatting were about GTA IV , but now , Im very disappointed because My first hateness point to this game was when the ADAPTATION come , it was very crappy ,

But I had a little hope that it will be better on 360 or PS3 (Ive played it on both consoles!) even it was 1 year older!

And now , after XXbox ate my dvds , scratched Two and one didn't worked , I still wait it and maybe I will change my way of thinking !

(I had completed the second chapter and Ive done the bank heist!)

On Apr 28 2008, 21:06 (one day before the release of GTA IV) there was 3,016 members online here at GTAF. Talk about hyped tounge.gif

However I think GTA IV deserves all the credit it gets. It's one of the greatest games I've ever played, and definitely my favorite GTA game.

It was worth it. And there were new gameplay features. A completely revamped girlfriend/friend system, different types of police vigilante missions, internet (I know not exactly great) and TV.

GTA IV was a great game, but it still did enough things wrong though. Hopefully R* will learn and next time add some more stuff and no more annoying (girl)friends..

I respectfully disagree, the (girl)friends system really gave me the impression that the story and world of IV was still going on after you beat it. biggrin.gif

I believe it was way over hyped and quite a bit overrated. The previews leading up to it were misleading, with huge emphasis on a realistic story that's a departure from past gta's (I think the story was extremely disappointing) and especially on the game world being a "vertical city" where you can climb every telephone pole and fire escape to the top of any building you wanted to. The latter's really not that big of a deal but it was just so hyped and seemed to be so guaranteed to be in the game that its absence was really noticed. Also what was disappointing was the lack of content compared to past gen GTA's, especially the lack of Tanks, rampages and flamethrowers (which were in every single GTA up until GTA IV). I really didn't like the friend system either. They fixed it in TLAD where they don't call you all the time though. If I were to rate it i'd give it a solid 8. 10 is ridiculous. Maybe Rockstar did pay IGN to give them that score... The best thing about the game is the city itself. It's excellent level design, the best open world city period. For the next major GTA i'll be sure to lower my expectations.

I still play GTA IV nearly every day though. It's a LOT of fun messing around in the city. The replay value is excellent.

I thought GTA IV was gonna be like a total RPG but without all the crappy stuff that comes with RPG, I mean, in terms of details just RPGish and that you could do EVERYTHING from the past GTAs combined with some new cool stuff.

Anybody remember how Rockstar promised that we could climb poles?

The proof of GTA IV's greatness is that most of the criticism it gets is to compare it to other GTAs. If you compare it to non-GTA games there's no contest.

Other games just seem less intelligent -- no matter how good they look or sound, you're running down a hallway or canyon looking for the exit to the next hallway or canyon. GTA has made me hate those games. GTA IV has obstacle-course missions, but it ALSO has the city to mess around in as you choose. Rockstar puts most other game studios to shame for not trying as hard or just not being real artists. This is why GTA IV got 10s. Nobody else makes anything as good!

I think it's easier and funnier than GTASA's one. In GTA4 you don't have that hidden short countdown until girlfriend got bored and have a full dialog between them, different from CJ who seemed to ignore the conversation (although I must admit Denise was pretty fun and scary sometimes, with quotes like "I had 3 kids but I gave them away" or "I think I'm pregnant again").

The friends meeting is something that should be better. You could call more than one at once in my opinion.

Didn't they also promise that peds. would remember you if you caused a crime by them? R* said that the missions would be more free to do instead of being pushed to do them which is one thing I find false. I mean, take the mission Hostile Negotiation. You get called and you are forced to do the mission and you can't save before.

Anyways, I think GTA IV pretty much lived up to the hype. GTA IV, GTA SA, and SR2 tie as my favorite games and GTA IV was impressing to me even if we were a bit misinformed on some stuff. About gameplay, how can yous miss the cover system? That's the biggest and probably the most important gameplay element in GTA IV. I mean, no more of your enemies getting the first shot like 80% of the time unlike most of the other GTA games.

I think it was worth it. Compared to most current generation games IMO it's in a class of its own.

Sure I miss some of that old school GTA nostalgia from the old GTAs, but it's not all bad. The fact that people still talk about it so strongly 18 months on whether it's negative, or positive just shows how much it made an impact on the GTA community.

I don't play it as much these days, but everytime I do it still amazes me. I wish I could relive that day on April 29 2008. It was one of the best moments in my gaming life since GTA III.

Yea i think R* might of pulled alot of features out at the last minute.for instance remember the trailers where the russian shop is..it was a binco?

climbing poles/fire escapes.etc it was just little things like that. Also you ever wonder why the hell they have a empty theam park? plus all the wasted space in alderney, why couldn`t they just make some country side instead? or added featuers instead of the wasted things.

So was it worth the hype and all the 10s it got?

No doubt. Each game i buy since gta (Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, Mirror's Edge, gt5 prolog, StuntMan Ignition, wwe 2008), and no one worth gta4. gta is the only game i know (yes, there are others, but i've got only this one) with a such freedom, and a long main story mission. It's a game we can play during many hours, 'cause you can do many things. And you can stop "playing" gta IV (i mean steals car and killing ppl), just to walk around. All others games i know, if you don't want to play the game, you have to quit :

- you can't walk around in Ghost Recon

- you can't explorer Mirror's Edge's maps, 'cause there is anything to exlpore

- you can't get out of your car and examine the track on gt5, or stop to see the beautiful sunrise, the mountain (alpes's track)

- you can't do anything a part of following the track on stuntman ignition

looking back i thought it was overhyped and very overrated. Don't fet me wrong i thought it was a solid game but not like a 10/10 like most websites gave it. I personally thought it was a let down for me and i wouldve givin it an 8 or 8.5

Considering I havn't had any other game this long? Every other game has been traded in, even COD4. But I havn't been able to trade in GTA4, so I gotta say no, it wasn't over rated at all.

Not for me at least.

It's funny how GTA makes some people (like me) usually despise linear games with the GTA's freedom to roam around a city and/or state. After being with GTA games I don't think I can ever get into a COD game. GTA IV isn't the perfect game (no game is perfect yet), but when you compare it to other seventh generation games I would say it does deserve all the 10/10s, 5/5s, A+s, 100%s, or whatever rating systems reviewers use. GTA IV just puts most other games in the seventh generation to shame. I still do enjoy SR2 and Red Faction: Guerrilla though. Those are, however, also sandbox games. I have to say MGS4 is only of the only linear games I can actually enjoy quite a bit.

Rockstar pretty much have the game underhyped. The long delay, long periods of silence, lack of public tests, etc. The media and especially the fans were way overhyping the game, saying stuff that were mere speculations as true.

GTA4 has been way past my expectations. AI felt freakishly smart, especially the police. The dialogue impresses me the most. There are so much to listen and all of them are entertaining to listen. The game just makes more sense to me when playing when other games it felt like something's not right (like texture freaking out, clunky animations, etc.). I don't like how people perceive a 10 rating as perfect. Games should be able to get a 10 not because of "perfection" but because it's the best damn game out there. A rating of F- through A+ makes more sense and GTA4 deserves an A+ from me.

I agree with what you say, just not SR2. I dunno why, that game just seemed so.... I dunno. Unfinished? Rushed? I had high hopes for it, but the lack of detail, the goofy animations, and lack of ANY physics ruined it for me. icon13.gif COD I like for the MP.
