FullMetal
Ok, here we go. This is my first decent creation using Photoshop CS4. Provide me with some constructive criticism (and be harsh if it has to). I don't need BS... Getting a hang of photoshop (finally). I tried it multiple times in the past 4/5 years if I'm not mistaken and never understood the logic of the program and working with the different tools. Now, I start to see how you can/must use the different tools in order to make something 'nice'. Also, if some of you guys have some tutorials/hints, feel free to post them. Help is always much appreciated. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/417748-first-photoshop-try/ Share on other sites
The Guru
It's a nice one for starters but the only part I would make changes to would be the white background. You should insert some kind of pattern, texture, image or anything to fill that plain piece of white. And you asked for tutorials GTAF's Tutorial Archive This is the tutorial archive put up by gta_talk which contains some tutorials for different programs constructed by GTAF users. Tutorialized This is a website which contains some tutorials for different GFX programs, I put up the 1 with PS tutorials since you are using PS. PS Lover A tutorial website dedicated to PS. It has tutorials from a beginners level to an advanced artist's level. Photoshop Tutorials Is also a tutorial website dedicated to PS. And many others can be found using Google So there, hope you can find some tutorials to get you going. FullMetal
Made some other stuff... I have to practice more and develop some real skills. Don't mind the FRAPS FPS counter on the second IV wallpaper... it was an old screenshot I found and I only noticed that the FPS counter was on it once I was busy with it. http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/2186/bell...kowallpaper.png http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/1412/lessbrainz.png http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/9524/randomwork.png http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/9100/gtaivwallpaper.png Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/417748-first-photoshop-try/#findComment-1059352691 Share on other sites
The Guru
Stretched my laptops page like hell But they are good again. But there is one part that isn't quite clean and that is the last one. The cutting out is quite rough. Maybe search for a tutorial about making cut outs smooth etc. But anyway. you are on the right track. 1066ant
I reckon you are using the poly selection tool thing that makes edges quite angular if you don't pu a load of little points. Try using the pen tool for better, smoother results when selecting stuff. There are tutorials on YouTube if you just search for them. I don't normaly put too much effort in to most stuff, like my sig, but great affects can be made with a a bit of practice. Wolf68k
Another great source for understanding Photoshop is Bert Monroy's show on Revision3.com called PixelPerfect Go back to his first show and enjoy. Comes out every Monday. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/417748-first-photoshop-try/#findComment-1059355538 Share on other sites
FullMetal
Current sig is also made in photoshop (a couple of minutes job nothing that 'great'). Also made this (had some inspiration all of a sudden). Should I use it? :] Problem is I couldn't get my font colours right (nor could I use other custom fonts that would suit the signature better). On top of that: should I add somekind of border (and what kind of border/tips?) or should I use some brushes and 'cut' away the edges'? edit: On top of that when I host my 'PNG file' of my signature it doesn't look the same as in my photoshop/image previewer. How can I fix this? Edited July 17, 2009 by fullmetal Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/417748-first-photoshop-try/#findComment-1059359852 Share on other sites
The Guru
Okay, so I would add a border to that, it would be 1px black border (in my mind). But if you want to cut of the edges I would use to polygonal lasso tool to just click each time and make it look like it was broken off from the full image. Qhen you have selected, CTRL+SHIFT+I to invert the selection and then press DELETE. This should give you an image with cracks on the sides. Then maybe add a shadow and use the blending modes that PS has to make it look better. I'm not sure what is wrong with hosting your PNGs but I'll see what I can find out. Shaunr
instead of a white background, a transparent one would really make your image look good Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/417748-first-photoshop-try/#findComment-1059360941 Share on other sites
FullMetal
It is actually a transparent background in photoshop and also I when I have saved it. But for some reason when I upload it it doesn't look normal anymore and not like my real result. Also changed some things... made two versions now. Tell me what you think (hopefully imageshack won't screw the image up). (first one is the other one I posted slightly edited but again with trasparent background, can anyone guess what I used as a background in the other two :]). The Guru
Ooh, that use to happen to me but then there was this one option where it asked me to flattten the image or something like that and then it came out in good quality. The Guru
HOW MUCH DOES A BASIC PHOTO SHOT CD COST FOR WINDOWS NOWER DAYS IN UK CURRENTCY WOULD BE HELPFULL First of all, it's not Photo Shot, it's Adobe Photoshop. I'm not too sure but maybe look up on UK Adobe Photoshop Family. Tommy-Vercetti19
Maybe your were saving it as a JPEG, I would recommend PNG for Transparency, Don't flatten the image before saving. If you want to get rid of those white edges with the polygonal lasso tool have your object/character selected and hit 'refine edge' then you can play with it to suit your selection. The sites that The Guru linked to are extremely helpfull for beginners, I still frequent them, One thing you should do is try to teach yourself, Like if you see a sig you like the effects used, Just have a look at it and try to do a comparison. Helps me a lot in finding new styles. Keep trying to find new ways to perfect your work. I constantly gain inspiration from the likes of M|chael and CCPD. There work inspires me to keep moving on and to raise the level of my work up to their level. Good work from a beginner, Just keep practicing and you will be up with all the big boys in no time, Ever hear of a member called Rafto? He joined and he practiced from scratch and now his work is top-notch. Benjimino234
For that 1st one I would fill the white with the standard GTAF blue, also make the guy's body go 'in' in border so you don't see his torso get cut off while the blue border frames it. FullMetal
Thanks for the advise people. My current signature (also posted below and viewable as my current signature, duh) is my latest creation. I'm really proud of it though it was a rather easy and quick job. FullMetal
I did another quick signature. Really enjoy messing around in photoshop and trying new things... shamefully I'm too lazy to read/watch tutorials. But then again, when I do I can never follow or I don't understand a damn thing. Anyways, here it is: Keep in mind this signature hasn't been finished at all... I wanted to add some finishing touches (and a border or something). FullMetal
Another update... god photoshop is addictive though hard to master the REAL skills. Anyways, yet again happy with the result.
