1shadow1
Hey fellow GTA4-gamers. First of all, excuse me for my English, I live in Europe. I've tried like 10 fixes to solve the stuttering that happens after you play 15-60 min GTA 4. Commandlines... Resolution changes.. etc etc. I formatted my pc a couple days ago, and I could play GTA 4 on High/Very High for about 3 days. Then suddenly, after playing a while it goes stuttering like hell. The most easy but stupid solution is to restart. But i'm not restarting the game every halfhour. I have a love/hate relationship with this game. Example: Last night driving through Broker, enjoying all the details without any problems. Then today, I f*cking hate this game, I want to play without any problems !!! So when I can play it good, it keeps impressing me although I've already played it for over 150 hours.. Yes, I havent't got this problem before.. anybody got this too ? greetings Yunastie/1shadow1/Jonas
Girish
Start by posting your system specifications and benchmark results. That will help. What commandlines have you tried?

Other hand you still can try to tweak your Vista to use less ram, but I don't think that this will help a lot. Lollercoaster
Hey man, I have the 8800 GTX also. I had this problem or a long time before I finally figured it out. Here's what you need to do: Go into nVidia control panel. Disable Threaded Optimization. Now, enjoy a stutter-free game As you may know, nVidia apparently added some kind of bullsh*t piece of f*cking sh*t optimization for GTA IV in the newest drivers, which caused Threaded Optimization to not work properly. I don't know what nVidia did, but the game looks like f*cking crap AND runs like f*cking crap when using the newer, so called "GTA IV-optimized (my ass)" drivers. f*cking pricks should learn to make proper drivers...Next time I'm buying an ATi Card. I'm sick of nVidia and their bullsh*t. /rant Edited July 9, 2009 by Lollercoaster

Now, enjoy a stutter-free game If this doesn't help, you need to get rid of the -nomemrestrict command and use the -memrestrict command instead as suggested in this topic. Also, with only 2 GB RAM, I wouldn't recommend using the -availablevidmem command either. Get rid of the height and width commands too. Use the in-game options to change the resolution and select a lower resolution.

SO you say everyone has to have a dedicated OS for IV, or even a dedicated PC? That's now how it's meant to be played.

I'm only recommending it for the most extreme cases. Like for the people who manage to get it working for max of three days. Anyway, is it so unthinkable? To have one extra CLEAN partition for gaming and work, without any firewalls, anticrap software and whatnot. Maximum stability, security and speed assured. To have one extra CLEAN partition for gaming and work, without any firewalls, anticrap software and whatnot. Maximum stability, security and speed assured. Not at all. I have a number of friends that does just that, and I used to do that myself. I say used to, because I upgraded to Quad core and cannot boot from my XP disc, since I need SP2 so I'm a bit screwed at the moment... I am running Windows 7 RC 7100 and must say that I am extremely happy so far.

Lodis
I was experiencing stuttering after about 30 minutes of play in GTA IV unless I used 180.84 XP drivers but the problem was that this meant I had less performance in other games or some games were not working correctly due to the drivers being so old. What fixed my stuttering was when I installed Windows 7 RC 7100. Now I can play GTA IV for hours with no stuttering regardless of what driver I use, not only that but I have been able to double all settings such as view distance, detail distance and Vehicle Density without stuttering. Windows 7 is obviously doing something that my Windows XP SP3 was not doing and I am really looking forward to receiving the full version in October. The OS also boots, reboots and works a lot faster than my XP, it has less background drivers running with many of them already set to manual as opposed to automatic. I am getting 37, 39, 40-50 fps in GTA IV on my laptop (NP8662, Q9000, GTX 260M) with high settings, occasionally 30 fps with busy chases by the police. I have also uninstalled my AV software n installed it in a fresh new partition Wat mkey is saying is true Doa clean install of it n regular defragmented it This helped me a lot....i didit had any stuttering issues also get rid of all commadlines except (-norestriction and -noprecache) <--keep these.. they help also increase ur pagefile to 4024 gigs it also reduces stuttering Edited July 18, 2009 by Saddy

mkey82
Basically, yes, But if you have a second HDD or a spare partition, you can use that one to install a secondary OS.

The only thing that appears to help is the -memrestrict command, which allowed me to play 16-18 minutes. This is the most I've reached... How lame... 1shadow1
Have you cleaned up the drivers before installing new ones? Have you tried the memrestrict commandline? Fixed it by using Memrestrict commandline. Played one hour, no problems at all.
