What's the most depressing song you know?

Recommended Posts

How about Type O Negative??

When Peter Steele disbanded Carnivore, he nearly did an about face, and with his VOICE! It was certainly moody stuff! But HEAVY still

Out of all the depressing songs I know...I guess that's my favorite? Not sure how to put it.

"Ever the Same" Rob Thomas. This song is depressing to me mainly because it was played at my cousin's funeral who tragically took his life last year. He was only a year older than me, so when I hear this song it brings back painful memories of that day. sad.gif

Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill

Yorke is great at pulling emotions from people, that mixed with the sad story behind this song pretty much f*cks with my head tounge.gif it's extremely sad.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrowdown_Hill

The song was written about biological warfare expert David Kelly who, as a matter of some contention, committed suicide in 2003. However, there is speculation that he was murdered, as demonstrated in the song. Thom Yorke himself confirmed the song's meaning in several interviews

BLACK SABBATH - The Writ is kinda downbeat, and Ozzy really has strong emotion in his singing, which is why his voice is so immortal!

If Ozzy dies (as the celebs seem to be doing these days) It's all over ... Well, we're back to Dio)

Lyrics on the channel, this one is 3 days old, should be in stereo audio!

The way I feel is the way I am

I wish I'd walked before I started to run to you

Just to you

What kind of people do you think we are?

Another joker who's a rock and roll star for you

Just for you

The faithful image of another man

The endless ocean of emotion I swam for you

Yeah for you

The shot troopers laying down on the floor

I wish they'd put an end to my running war with you

Yeah with you

Are you metal, are you man?

You've changed a lot since you began

Yeah began

Ladies digging gold from you

Will they still dig now you're through

Yeah you're through

You bought and sold me with your lying words

The voices in the deck that you never heard came through

Yeah came through

Your folly finally got to spend with a gun

A poison father and his poisonous son, that's you

Yeah that's you

I'm begging please don't let it get any worse

The anger inside will turn to a curse on you

Yeah curse you

A lot of promises that never came true

You're gonna get what's coming to you, that's true

Ah, that's true

Are you Satan, are you man?

You've changed a lot since it began

Yeah it began

Vultures sucking gold from you

Will they still suck now you're through

(Cats, Rats)

The search is on, so you just better run

And find yourself another way

Rob the dead, then you'll feel a thing

To keep them living for another day

(Rats, Rat)

You are nonentity, you have no destiny

You are a figment of a thing unknown

A mantle picture of a stolen soul

A fornication of your golden throne

A smiling face, it means the world to me, yeah

So tired of sadness and of misery, yeah

My life it started some time ago

Where it will end, I don't know

I thought I was so good

I thought I was fine

I feel my world is out of time

But everything is gonna work out fine, yeah

If it don't I think I'll lose my mind, yeah

I know, I know, I know, yeah yeah I know

Listen to me while I sing this song

You might just think the words are wrong

Too many people advising me

But they don't know what my eyes see

....

Immortal Technique - Dance With the Devil

Faced-paced - and rap - but by far the most depressing goddamn song I know. It's all in the lyrics, man.

Definitely second that Vercetti. I believe the reason it has such effect is because of how harshly realistic it is.

Eels - Guest List

Not very depressing, and definitely not the darkest of Everett's work, but it stands out to me at the moment as rather bleak.

I'd have to say that Something I can never have by Nine Inch Nails is pretty moving, especially the last minute and a half.

Also, Jolene, by the White Stripes is a fantastic song, you can really hear the emotion in Jack's voice.

Well, I suck at youtube tags so I apologize for not posting vids, but...

Mad World - Gary Jules (Predictable)

Beck - Farewell Ride

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet

Mark Collie - In time (Punisher ftw?)

Otis Taylor - Ten Million Slaves (Song from the "Public Enemies" Trailer is pretty downbeat.)

Alabama 3 - Woke up this Morning (It's the Sopranos theme song, however, the lyrics are pretty damned melancholy)

Bees Gees - Message to You (The beat doesn't sound like it, but it's all in the words.)

The Cranberries - Zombie (Ireland FTW!)

Leonard Cohen - First we take Manhatten

Leonard Cohen - Everybody knows

Leonard Cohen - Avalanche

Leonard Cohen - Who by Fire (Last one I promise...)

Phillip Glass - Koyannisqatsi

Phillip Glass - Facades

Phillip Glass - Prophecies

Phillip Glass - Pruit Igoe

Suzanne Vega - Luka

Suzanne Vega - The Queen and the Soldier

The Cask of Amontillado - Alan Parson's Project (I'll post the link for this one, it's that good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBC7Rown13Q)

Massive Attack - Teardrop (Instrumental version, and full version.)

King Crimson - Court of the Crimson King

King Crimson - One Time

Hello Zepp - Charlie Clouser (SAW theme song)

Lux Aterna - Clint Mansell (Requiem for a dream theme song)

Everlast - What it's like

Everlast - Saving Grace

Johnny Cash - I hung my head

Johnny Cash - Hurt

The Doors - The End

Alright, sorry for the epic list, but I'd say they all warranted being on that list, including the ones without vocals, you don't need words to be depressing.

Hank Williams - Long Gone Lonesome Blues

I went down to the river to watch the fish swim by;

But I got to the river so lonesome I wanted to die..., Oh Lord!

And then I jumped in the river, but the doggone river was dry.

She's long gone, and now I'm lonesome blue.

I had me a woman who couldn't be true.

She made me for my money and she made me blue.

A man needs a woman that he can lean on,

But my leanin' post is done left and gone.

She's long gone, and now I'm lonesome blue.

I'm gonna find me a river, one that's cold as ice.

And when I find me that river, Lord I'm gonna pay the price, Oh Lord!

I'm goin' down in it three times, but Lord I'm only comin up twice.

She's long gone, and now I'm lonesome blue.

She told me on Sunday she was checkin' me out;

Long about Monday she was nowhere about.

And here it is Tuesday, ain't had no news.

I got them gone but not forgotten blues.

She's long gone, and now I'm lonesome blue.

Plenty of sad songs from Hank Williams. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry also comes to mind.

Yes, that's one song. Without any words at all, it's got to be the saddest song I've ever heard. That is made especially true in Part 3, with the radio chatter. Is he frantically calling for help to save someone's life? Is he dying himself? Or, is he just making a routine call? I can never tell, and I end up assuming the former. sad.gif

The first few minutes of Static seem sadder if not creepier. If only I knew where they got that voice sample from.

At The Gates- Flames Of The End

This is the epilogue of 'At The Gates'' famous 'Slaughter Of The Soul' album. It's an instrumental, so theres no lyrics to make you feel down and sh*tty, but the music is epic and i found it heartbreaking the first time i heard it, which sounds kind of gay, but its just that powerful. What also makes it depressing is that its the outro to their last album, and its always sad to see a great band come to an end.

That beautiful instrumental piece from a very disturbed, very troubled young musical genius. That piece, has always had a great depressing effect on me.

Take that recording, and it has the exact opposite effects. Amazing.

I am quite a fan of instrumental tracks such as the one that Hurricane5 posted above me. Sometimes the sheer power and manner of which an instrument is played can convey emotions just as well as a well-written heavily lyrical piece.

Buckethead's Real Diamond in the Rough has a slow, downbeat tone for most of it's tracks and has some quite powerful and almost emotional instrument content. Here is a good example:

"When I Get Where Im Going" - Brad Paisley

Only reason this song is depressing to me is because it was played at the funeral of my former wrestling coach who passed away.

RIP Coach.

I love Radiohead and many would accuse their music of being deppressing, but I actually find it uplifting. What I find most depressing is the song Barbie Girl. I'm actually depressed and ill just thinking of it. mad.gif

The thing is it only sounds uplifting, most the songs themselves are not. No Surprises is pretty damn depressing.

Also to the person who posted Dance with the Devil, I've heard that once before and all I can say is Jesus Christ.

I'm usually not that into music that makes me feel like dying, but this one left a strong impression on me. Check it out.
