Mad Tony
Maybe US soldiers will stop dying when US goverment cease to invade other countries with "we do it for peace" excuse while it's obvious that all they want is crude oil? There are so many other countries in which civil wars and mass murder are happening(many countries in Africa) but there are no US soldiers... why? Because these countries are not profitable I hate to burst your bubble but there isn't any oil in Afghanistan.
Breaking Bohan
7 American troops killed in Afghan incidents http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/wo...0,1275259.story ----------- The media will likely start to throw a fit once MJ memorial is over, and they refocus on the fact that the country is at war and people are getting killed. I think it is hard for any country to "win" in Afghanistan - and growing political pressure will eventually force the troops back to "safer" bases (just as happened in Iraq). Let's hope for the best and that things turn out OK.
Seachmall
You may respect their tactics, and they're respectable intelligence. But I have none beyond that. I also respect their courage and fearlessness among many other things. Don't get me wrong I think we should slaughter the lot of them because at the end of the day I'm backing the guy who has my back, and they've made it us against them. sam33
To be honest I think we should leave there country alone. Just because a couple of hundred or so individuals plot terror doesnt mean several countries should invade one country just to rid the country of those people. Hell alot of the suspects who planned 9/11 were caught. A war like this is just a much smaller repeat of the Crusades and is just going to end in more blood shed on both sides. El Zilcho
I'm wondering now, what would constitute a victory in Afghanistan? The capture/killing of leader of the Taliban? The ousting of the forces from the mountains in Afghanistan and Pakistan? Or what? Because as noted by Breaking Bohan, a "win" isn't so finite in a war were battles are less common than bombings. And most of the 9/11 bombers were Egyptian and Libyan, weren't they? Well, the admitance of Al Qeadas involvement brought upon the invasion. CygnusX1
The question is: When does this sh*t really stop? It doesn't end until we are no longer dependant on Oil. Or when the Oil is gone. China and other countries are ready and willing to outbid us. No one in Europe or USA eats without energy produced from Oil, so we must maintain a presense in the Middle East. Just a fact of life now.

I don't think this War on Islam Terror can be one. It's essentially a war on an ideology and belief system. Resistance generally strengthens these, as you mentioned earlier "An idea never dies". A "win" here would mean wiping Extremism from the face of the planet, not an easy task. If you don't completely wipe it it will just grow stronger down the line. Look at Christianity, it grew and grew into a huge, powerful force until it toppled the belief system of the Roman Empire itself, turning the tables on the prosecutors. Of course, Christianity preached peace, but extremist beliefs show the same resilience to persecution. Almost as if it strengths their resolve, their need to soldier on. Mad Tony
@sam33: I think the war in Afghanistan is a lot different to the crusades as it's more about taking down the Taliban and Al-Qaeda than it is religion. This is right after they allowed us to fly troops over their land. Well, to be fair, they probably didn't permit us to use their airspace with the expectation that we will drop flowers and cash down on them. While nuking them sounds too harsh - I am hard pressed to think of any way to "win"

Its not so simple as capturing or killing a leader of the Taliban. They've done that before but another will just pop up in there place.

1066ant
you f*ck with them, they try to stop you. simple. Like any country or group of people really. I find it slightly annoying that all US and UK casulties are highly mention in the press but fail to note the huge numbers of civillians or arabs killed. Its not that I disrespect the soldiers, they are doing their job, but why only tell half the story...

10th Mo-Town
He didn't mean it literally. Besides, I'm fairly certain he only meant the extremists. That'd be impossible considering the extremists in Iraq live amongst the local population, the fear they instill in them guarantees that their victims won't seek help. In Afghanistan however more than often the extremists use people such as their own families as shields so that the American's can't shoot them. In reality unless we go all out war Country v Country NO SURVIVORS, a nuke is unnecessary. You can't just forget about the problem, and you can't just say not my problem, because it's all our problem.
