Why won't Rockstar Embrace Modding

I completely agree with you supermortalhuman, a sa matter of fact im feeling screwed in the ass by r* pretty hard, but they aint the only guys.

All those companys are always promicing things, but they never atually do it.

The reason for r* not to help us with modding is simple, they rather see us clean up the dirty work by making tools etc. It actually helps sales even more, people want to discover gta, wich isnt needed if r* throws it on the plate by themselves.

r* do not help modding or try to block it, it is just simple mp blocking, as GFWL doesnt support it(Damn you, microsoft).

As many others i would love to see a fully moddable gta with support, one on the old engine if it is needed, we dont care, look at what the modding scene all achieved by their own research, never had any r* help.

They actually should take a look at rFactor, that is a game build for modding, ISI gives modding groups full support and there are thousands of mods for it, wich i love, it might even be one of the best selling racing games, due to the fact of the huge modding, wich get supported by the developpers. Support would help the modding scene, but why should they do it? it only costs them time and money to do that, wich they rather dont(GTA4 made r* look like a bunch of guys who only try to make money imo), rather spend time on developping the next gta or other games, wich make their money right.

Amazing - imagine what we could do with GTA IV: if they would just allow it:

Valve is a company that embraces modding... and it has gotten them a lot of money. Why, do you ask? Have you ever heard of Counter-Strike? It began as a free mod for Half-Life 1. After a couple of versions, Valve bought out the mod-team and adopted it. Now it's been sold millions of times, and it has 2 new versions.

Same goes for Day of Defeat: Source. First it was a free mod, but now you have to buy it.

If only R* were smart enough to release an SDK...............

(I hope gta5 makes it to pc too, but unfortunately I have my doubts, console kiddies have spoiled everything.....)

What about all the people moaning and calling gta iv garbage badly coded etc, when all they really needed was an upgrade or a better pc altogether, but then again all game devs should have real, no bs minimum specs and real recomended specs on back of the box.

* with all the crap misuse of mods has created in GTAIV MP, I don't expect announcement of full modding support would cause an ultra positive reaction and many people would remember how they were unable to play GTAIV MP (which,as it turned out, was a major part of the game)

Yeah, that part of modding for cheating in MP is way out of order and I'm completely against, the only mods I'm keeping an eye out for are single player enhancements to extend its life.

R* are asses for allowing this. just make it so we can allow/not allow mods on server by host

That would be good, but unless they develop a great anti cheat that works great with gfwl support we would still get idiots wrecking the no mods games just to be the idiots they are.

I think it's T2's fault ! What they want it's to make money.They don't give a sh*t about fans ! But I think it's a part of Rockstar fault too !

Don't give a s about fans, well they soon would if people stopped buying there games and boycotted consoles.

Absolutely spot on and they are not only making money, they have respect from there user base for running a great gaming service where cheating is minimal, cheaters get banned smile.gif and they listen to the fans, maybe not with left 4 dead 2 but I don't blame them for it as its hugely popular and it was last years game, I can't wait to buy that game.

Well, the sensationalist stuff I posted didn't get their attention, that means it's up to us. I suppose perhaps they will consider modding more heavily if this topic weighs in more heavily. Thank you for your continued support!

Recently ANTIALIASING has been added to the game through virtue of modding, another reason this is a great thing (DON'T try it without a super card, it pretty much shows why they left it out!)! Anyone have any other ideas to help spread that we want modding officially supported (even if unsupported by technical support)? Anyone good at arranging a Petition? smile.gif

Amazing - imagine what we could do with GTA IV: if they would just allow it:

At least post a better quality video than that awful mess, thats not a good way to promote modding.

One could take from that video, regarding mods,

# Dreadful frame-rate

# Stupid, eye-bleeding intense light.

# Bloom, or rather Super Bloom everywhere, making everything soooo soft it could star in it's own Andrex Commercial.

# Nicked sound effects from other games, not really a sign of originality, or talent.

# And, is Interlacing one of GTA SA's new modding "Features", now ? lol.

Seriously, that video made my head hurt after a few minutes, and should be promoted to either,

"A quick way to test out what a migraine feels like", or

"How to completely fail to understand what De-Interlacing is"

Not having a pop at you, but there must be mod videos online that better-promote videos, and NOT posted by idiots who fail at understanding video.

Rockstar wont let people mod their games because, they dont want to lose profits on theirgames.

take the gta san vice mod for instance.

its way much better than gta vice city, but its free, and rockstar greedy, rockstar want money.

the only mod ive seen that rockstar looked at is the state of liberty mod.

the main founder of it asked permission from rockstar to mod gta vice city in 2005, and the project is major now.

i say that if we can get enugh voices, then rockstar will spill it out, all their tools.

rockstar should let us mod at least older games, like vice city,gta3 and san andreas.

that era is gone.no more profits. why dont tHEY LET US MOD?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

I think they don't want to allow modding, because they think someone will abuse the privileges of modding somehow. Don't question me anyone! This is only my thought.

Well, alright, perhaps all true (esp. framerate and gross overblooming), but the depth of what could be possible as demonstrated by this video remains.

For my ka-ching, the real mod we're missing is missions. It doesn't seem like modders have much trouble adding cars, textures, and anything else graphical, (LOVE that we've got AA. A TRUE triumph of modding ability... cannot wait for my 4GB gfx), though "we" are constrained how fast mods can be put out there by lack of support.

But, doesn't seem to be much new mission ability, or it seems to take a lot longer to get out... OR nobody cares about that as much as new cars, textures, and anything else graphical... biggrin.gif

What I'm saying is I'd like to see new expansions released by us. Now that'd be cool!!

(Of course, some smart-a$$ is gonna drop a link for that forum on me where they need LOTS and LOTS of help and what about it, huh?)

I don't mean to question you, but they could send a cease and desist at any time to any site offering tools - it tells me it's not hot coffee or other weird things, they allow it, but they don't help out. Which is what I don't understand. I am thrilled that Rockstar is SO awesome to allow this, but why don't they shoot us some tools? Can't they at least hook me up with San Andreas tools, maybe then finally some IV ones if it goes OK?

Come on Rockstar, let me know.

Come on my friends:

There is nothing that can't be done if we raise our voice as One

Yes, that. Thank you wink.gif

Also for your posting otherwise, and all hopefuls, let's keep it rolling smile.gif

Anyone care to post more examples of what Modding can do?

I put shadow-link's tool for SA DFF to IV WDR on digg, if it gets dugg and seen by a lot of PC Gamers, maybe modding will grow as well and help Rockstar to decide to give some support. Just google dff2wdr and you can find this useful tool and digg the story so that it gets seen by a wider audience.

Drunk Russian 9

I agree with the thread creator. R* definetely needs to embrace modding.

However, I think it's tied to the fact that they don't really care about the PC version all that much. The sad thing is, it would bring them so much more revenue. They even had listed player made mods in the features on SA on the website . . .

They really need to look at the PC community more.

Yes! The song! gramel123 made this demo, I wonder if he saw the topic? because, the song, gotta go in here. Why no official tools? Who else wants to know?

Removing modding capabilities lessens the chances of MP cheating and people discovering critical holes in the game. This in turn keeps people from having bad experiences in multiplayer keeping them playing it and their rating high. After the recent pricing blow R* had to do they have to do this if they still want profit. Wether or not we like modding is no longer relevant me thinks

Modding is great but I don't see this kind of chaos in the multiplayers of any other game. confused.gif . It's called VIP hacks in other games and you have to pay 20 bucks a month to have these cheats.

And now it's good, there aren't any hackers? C'mon! Don't lick FAILstar's ass! Hackers are there, have been and always will be, with or without official modding support.

Basically you're asking R* to give out their secret recipe for GTA4 and SA?

No way is that gonna happen as then all these crappy little companies will start making clone games.

The coca-coala recipe? the irn-bru recipe? only two people know that and they're not allowed to travel in the same vehicle incase they both die.

If you want to mod the games then go ahead and do it, no one's stopping you confused.gif

The real reason no one plays GTA IV Multiplayer? I don't know. (MTA/SAMP players - where ya at? Is this freedom the reason you play MTA/SAMP? biggrin.gif)

From Johnline:

hi guys, general quality of modelling is so much higher than it was 5 years ago, great work.

heres me abusing spline sweep in max and putting it in mta 1.0. the track is a moebius strip, so you do one lap and you're on the other side, which makes things interesting.

couldnt have done it without arc_'s help who added gravity functions and wrote a vector script to modify gravity on the fly.

Rockstar makes more money by not supporting the PC version properly. Why work hard to make a quality product when you can find chumps that'll settle for almost nothing?

The only reason we even got this game is because the people who would have bought the console version already did in the ~half year between when the game came out and when the PC version came out.

We already know the recipe through and through to an extent that it could be cloned and take probably the same amount of time it would take to make a total conversion.

At the great length that I wrote this, basically, it shows that I can see the recipe and out of everything I have ever used to visualize ideas, nothing has surpassed GTA San Andreas, even with third party tools when R& could hook us up after all of this time. IV is going to be great, and everyone is playing the MP on San Andreas still tounge.gif
