Wolf68k Posted July 5, 2009 Share Posted July 5, 2009 Silly question but does the laptop have USB2.0 ports? Before you just say yes, make sure you know for sure. USB external HDD that require nothing more than the USB for power are really laptop drives but USB1.x does not support power to a device the way USB2.0 does. Star-Lord Posted July 6, 2009 Share Posted July 6, 2009 I had the same problem with my Verbatim USB500 it would work on my other computer but not on my main system. I did everything possible to get it to work with no luck. Finally I re-inserted it into the computer that detected it just fine and what I did was open device manager and opened the location of the drivers and copied them to a USB flash drive and copied them back to my main system, that didn't work either...so i unplugged all my USB devices and re-booted the system and plugged the drive into one of the back ports and viola! what do you know it worked! What I believed happened is that their wasn't enough power left for the drive to operate normally, seeing how USB shares it's power with all other USB devices.
