Omnia sunt Communia
I've been working in shops and warehouses since I left school in 2006 (when I was 16) and though three years may seem like a small amount of time to be doing the same thing over and over again; I'm already sick of the retail sector. I want to try something new and fresh. I want to do something that I'm actually good at or interested in, the only problem is, what? I have no idea what career is right for me. I've only ever known retail work and I'm not really sure on what my strengths and weaknesses are. I have varying interests in various fields though I'm unaware of how I can change anything of them into a profession. I need some advice on choosing a career. Advice? Suggestions? Websites? Petarkco
I'm pretty sure I am going to become a Cardiothoracic Surgeon (Heart Surgeon for dumasses). I don't give a sh*t that advanced training program in Cardiothoracic Surgery is six years in duration with two of these years being devoted to experience in General Surgery. DeeperRed
Well I have always wanted to be a writer/Director ever since I was 9 and want to stive towards this goal. Luckly I have many contacts in the industry so it helps me a lot. I geared towards this because I am a very creative person and I also love to entertain. Though I am still looking at acting as a valid path. I might be able to set up a bunch of auditions at the BBC to see where I can get. Though Acting would only be a stepping stone to getting to director for me as I have been told I am good at it. I would much rather be behind the camera making the story rather then being the story. Girish
Good question. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do with my life. I never planned for anything. I just like to take things the way they come. A few years back I wanted to be an electronics engineer. Two years into that sh*t and I knew I didn't like it. I completed it though. Perhaps, I should have undergone career counselling or something. But the one I took a few years before that told me to get into Biomedical engineering. I was least interested in that so I'm not sure how accurate these career deciding tests are. Right now, I'm venturing into networking. I'll see how that pans out. I still have a few years on my hands to choose something definitive and settle down with it.
•Rapidoh
You should look into the things you are at least somewhat interested in then. Hell even go to a job center and ask them to help you out with what kind of job you might find interesting. Maybe even look at some open college's near you for some courses that aren't full time into the things you find interesting and see what they have to offer. Omnia sunt Communia
I just took an online survey (one of hundreds) to see which careers would be best suited for me based on my skills & interests. According to the survey I'm best suited to a job in the Arts, Crafts and Design and the Preforming Arts, Broadcast and Media sectors. That's according to both my skills & interests. According to my skills, I'm best suited for roles in the; Medical Technology, Enviromental Sciences, Arts, Crafts & Design, Performing Arts, Broadcast and Media, Legal Services and Science and Research sectors. According to my interests, I'm best suited for roles in the; Publishing and Journalism, Preforming Arts, Broadcast & Media and Arts, Crafts & Designs sector. I get a lot of people telling me I should be a political or lawyer because of my strong opinions and knowledge about politics/law, though those jobs don't interest me in the slighest. Though the idea of journalism or writing/screenwriting interests me slightly. The only problem is I'm not sure I have the motivation and dedicated to stick to deadlines. During that time I will be publishing a web app I've been working on for a few years. I'm hoping that will be provide some basic income and help to get my company up and running. I don't plan on working for someone, I'd rather do my own thing.

chris
I have always been a very hands on kinda guy, sitting in an office all day would f*cking kill me so i decided to see what i like in the construction industry. Im currently studying for a national diploma in carpentry, i should be fully qualified at the end of next year. I do have a brief plan of what i want to do after that mainly expanding into different sections of the industry but i never look too far ahead in my life cause you know i could get hit by a bus tomorow. My advice Jacky is that you make a list of things you like doing, find out about companies around your area that do that kind of thing, contact them and ask if you could do some unpaid work experience just to get a feel for the job. You would be surprised how many people i know who have done this, one of my mates even got to experience life in a solicitors office so its not a bad idea. Good luck mate. I'm going to work my ass off for that, but even if it doesn't happen, i definitely want to work somewhere in the higher ranks of the police force. DmitriyMedvedev
join the army! thats the best thing us euros could do. because its only a question of time before america will invade us. the Americans sees us europeans as sub-human, they want to kill us, they want to kill our family. they would kill european children for fun. so we have to be ready to defend and fight. i am planning on moving to russia and joining their army. its only a question of time! Questionnaires? Anything really. Ok, here's some hints that could help you along the right path: In my experience people actually do get a pretty good idea about what they would be suited for by looking at their pasts: In what situations have you been able to perform well? What did you enjoy doing? What aspects of your jobs up until now have you enjoyed the most? Do you like contact with customers? Do you like structured tasks, like administration? Do you like practical, hands-on work? Do you prefer working independently or as part of a group? Do you want to work as a manager or would you prefer not to? Focus on what your strengths are and try to find jobs where your weaknesses (whatever they may be) are less/not important.

Omnia sunt Communia
<SNIP> Nobody asked for your opinion, CrocodileDundee. Thank you for the suggestions, everyone. It's also interesting to see all the different career paths people have/are choosing. I guess Grand Theft Auto really is a game for everyone! I've made a few decisions towards what I might want to do, it's just a case of looking over how feasible they are.
FullMetal
I have no idea whatsoever. I just did one year of History on the university... and failed miserably. Totally not what I expected from it and I'm thinking about studying psychology or languages (English and Spanish) on College. Still don't know what to do... going to look around the coming 2/3 months and decide what I want to do. Languages seem really interesting. They come in really handy and it opens up alot of doors. Plus, if you think about journalism or some sorts studying languages is also a good start. Well, that's what I think of it. It's going to be hard though, studying languages!
