Whatever my game runs fine. I rarely see any texture corruption or object pop ins.

U will realize having the view dist. @ 30 is the problem. I tryed running up the view dist to 30 , high textures, using about 900mb game resources. Yes i started getting texture greys and slow oblect pop ins.

My view dist is @ 8

I saw NO visual difference having the view dist set to 30. only visual problems

Since you are about 400mb of game resources over . U might as well run the view dist up to 100. Whats stopping u?

keep telling yourself its "leakage"

I have this problem and something keeps making me think that it's related to VRAM since it seems more common on 512 mb GPU's and my 8800gt is the weakest part of my computer, however it still seems to happen for me with the graphics set really low so I'm not sure. My other thought is that it might have something to do with XP since it seems to run better on Vista and Windows 7 but I see a couple of people here running it on Vista and having the issue so this must not be the case. The oddest thing about it is that I never saw it until I went into the apartment the OP mentioned(after about 30 hours of gameplay) but after that I started seeing it other places as well though it is still most common there.

System Specs:

8800gt OC

i7 920 @ 3.99 GHz(HT off)

3x1Gb RAM @ 1520 MHz

XP 32 SP3(it runs better in Windows 7 but I can't get my controller working)

it might be the video memory interface and bandwidth

8800s

The newer cards are 512-bit or better.

This will fix your problem. Go get this card. EVGA GeForce GTX 285

Remember, U get what u pay for. mercie_blink.gif

You just said: YOURE GAME MUST RUN LIKE sh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

with super nerdy accent and all that foreign stuff.

Now you say: whatever my game runs fine.. rofl, seriously you got something up your head.

And 30 view distance has a major visual difference, use your eyes, look at distant lamp posts, trashcans and many many more objects, building LOD are much better and dont pop-in detail is the higher LOD and requires more of your computer than view distance.

Am I 400 resources over? No Im not.

And yes, its leakage since I get it with every setting on low aswell, idiot. Seriously you got something stuck in your brain considering your last post, and now this. wtf.

Seems people who have the 8800 series get this problem alot?

Maybe it's a bug in the graphics card or drivers, not the game itself....Maybe nVidia just sucks f*cking cock.

I have this problem particularly at the PlayboyX apartment, also in low lying spots outside but usually only when driving not walking. I think the speed of geometry change is important.

I believe the gray surfaces are the underlying geometry of the world. In the apartment I believe the gray surface is the top of the geometry for the building. The actual room is applied (positioned) over the base geometry and when your CPU/GPU is fast enough you'll just never see that gray surface.

I only seem to have the problem until I have been running the game for some time so I think it's a resource allocation problem. We all know how badly the game stutters particularly after running for some time, this is just another effect caused by that same 'resources get used up' defect in the graphics engine.

I run GTA4 on a [email protected], GTX9800-OC 512Mb, XP SP3 4Gb (3.25Gb available). I am not exceeding the resource limit when using medium textures.

I only see this problem after running for about one hour. When the game first starts up it's fine.

It is indeed the LOD of that building, but it happens from launch.

It is the game deciding "Am I in interior? Exterior? Far or close to this building that this interior is in?"

It is an LOD switching problem AT initialization AND between zones - the faster your components, the less it will happen (IF you use XP, Vista takes even more speed to offset it being 3X slower than XP - do not argue this with me, I have tested vista on Many machines and with every hardware I tested it is Consistently 3X slower than XP. Doesn't matter in normal use, but this kills your games. And those of you getting 30 FPS in vista, you can be getting 60+ in XP - true - but not 90+, it isn't 3x faster across the board, it is a proportional increase and decrease in speed - I feel it necessary to explain this clearly for those who will make assumptions and if you are getting 30+ FPS in vista, your computer is great, and you'd get even more performance in XP, and THIS bug will literally vanish if those in Vista with 30+ FPS try in XP, that's all wink.gif)

The newer your operating system (read: If you use vista) it will happen more. XP SP3 is 3X faster than any version of vista (real world, proven) and you need "even faster" components to avoid this problem in vista. Those of you who actually have good and fast hardware on vista, I PROMISE you this problem WILL go away if you try the game on XP. I PROMISE you that.

GTA runs better for me in Vista, so no. And in XP its alot more choppy.

And no, you do not get 60fps if you run the game in XP, really. ive tested it aswell I get the same framerates well, better in vista aswell as the game runs alot smoother while it chops randomly in XP.

I think youre just another XP fanboy who tried vista once on an old dell with a celeron at 1,6ghz.

Oh and if you read Columbos post, youll realise he has the issue aswell and hes on... wait for it...

WINDOWS XP

Also read bobs post (above yours) hes also on......

XP!!!

Lets bet some money on this issue, it wont go away seriously read the posts before you say THE PROBLEMS WILL GO AWAY!!! when obviously they are on XP..

8800 GTS (320MB VRAM)

3GB RAM

C2D E6750 2.66 GHz

And it doesn't matter if I run the game on low or medium, I still have those stupid grey layers. I tried the -memrestrict xxxxxxxx, some "Hyper Duper Ultimate Super Turbo 3000 Performance mod, 16515646 FPS gain guaranteed!!1!" and everything else I found on this forum. Nothing helped.

Now I'm going to buy a GTX 260, because with that layers the game is pissing me off everytime I'm driving around city. It is unplayable for me. sad.gif

+ I tried every new patch and drivers, too.

I think this error is related to hard disk performance. You see the low LOD version until the high version is paged in from disk.

Updating mobo/chipset drivers and defragging the HD should help.

Hm, that might be. I do have a crappy 5200 rpm harddrive....maybe a 7200rpm would be better

Defragmenting was the first thing that I did.

HDD - 7500rpm

Drivers are the newest.

I think it is in my graphic card (8800 GTS). confused.gif

The ps3 and 360 has this issue, so its not OS related, neither hardware.

No offense, but you're full of it. I really don't intend to offend you, but to say vista is outperforming XP is a fool words.

I didn't say it was FROM vista, I said ANYONE who experiences this on vista will experience LESS on XP - and it's True. Regardless of what you think, Vista is about 1/3 the speed of XP on my machine, my mom's machine, and my cousin's machine, let alone other machines I've just happened to be testing out and noticed "hey, this is similar to my box, but 1/3 the speed in just about everything I try."

Don't believe me? WHy don't one of you who use XP and have this problem, try in vista, and prove this kid that it is worse on that OS.

Unless you have 64bit Vista and all of your hardware is specifically designed for vista - not just compatible - you are wrong, unfortunately.

I have two pc - one with vista and core duo @ 3G. The other xp with core duo @2.6G.

GTA preformed well on xp with low resolution and extremely well on vista with highest resolution because it has 3G cpu. The problem would not be about OS. Consider the speed of the cpu as well and the graphic card.

A faster cpu with xp will out preform vista with slower cpu but the opposite will also be true. Vista with faster cpu will out class an xp with slower cpu.

When upgrading, consider the cpu first before considering the graphic card. OS has little effect.

qustion, on vista XP. It depends on the computer processor speed not if you have windows 98 or windows vista. Check and see if computer processor speed is problem.

To fix this issue, put this in a file named commandline.txt file in the main GTA 4

-availablevidmem 3 -nomemrestrict -norestrictions -noprecash

Now instead of getting pop in, your frame rate will just drop a little bit. the game will play just fine if you stay with the settings that you normally play with. Just because you have like 3 times more ram showing in the graphics menu doesn't mean that you should use it. If you have a 512MB video card, don't go using like 1GB of video settings, just stay with the normal settings. The pop in won't happen, but if you go too hard with the settings, the game will slow to a crawl, it will reach the single digits easily.

You could also probably use a different number for the availablevidmem command, but I'm posting 3 because I know for sure that it works. If your framerate is too low because of this, try lowering your settings even more.
