Reconite
Right, I made this thread so people won't have to keep posting in the Fallout 3 thread with questions and comparisons with Fallout 1 and 2. I think this deserves a topic because F1 and 2 have already taken a whole page out of the Fallout 3 topic. Enjoy. P.S. Feel free to post about Fallout: Tactics and the other fallout spin-offs here too. Edited July 4, 2009 by Reconite
Grand Theft Auto Dude
Good idea. I tried to get Fallout 2 when it was free on GameTap, but GameTap sucks and didn't work. Not really sure I'd like it anyway, because I hate turn-based combat.
Reconite
You might want to try Fallout: Tactics if you don't like turn based, it's a bit off on the storyline part of it but you can set it to real-time and it plays like the first 2 except you command a squad. Also in Fallout 1 and 2 you can turn up dial on the preferences menu to full speed if you are finding it too slow. But trust me, once you start playing it you will want to keep on playing it, turn based or not. P.S. You can buy the 'Fallout: Collection' or 'Fallout: Trilogy - 3 Pack' which both have Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics for quite cheap nowadays. Otter
I'm back into the swing of it, but yeah, still find it incredibly slow. Like, to open a desk or drawer, you've got to watch the obnoxious animation first... ...but I love it. Can't put it away.
Reconite
I've recently finished Fallout 2 and am going back to do Fallout 1... lol wrong way round, I know. That thing with the slow animations, have you clicked the small X under the combat speed dial in the preferences menu? Because I think that applies it to player speed as well. But here's a tip, make sure you have all of the latest patches before playing because when you download and install the latest patch your old save files won't work with it, all of these fix loads of bugs, make gameplay easier and even adds some lost content back into Fo2, the high-res patches don't require you to delete your saves and start again though, all the others do. For Fallout 2, get: Killap's Restoration PatchKillap's Unofficial Patch (I think this comes with the Restoration Patch already but you can get it separately). Fallout 2 High Resolution Patch For Fallout 1, get:Fallout 1 Team X Patch 1.3.3Fallout 1 High Resolution PatchI'm pretty sure you can download all of these at No Mutants Allowed. And If you get stuck with making them work, use the readme file, I hardly ever do that and only just got my High Res Patches to work by reading it. The Restoration Patch adds 4 lost Fallout 2 locations and loads of people, quests and different item locations (also I think the unofficial patch comes with this). The Fallout 2 Unofficial Patch fixes over 800 bugs in the original Fallout 2, including the car disappearance ones. Fallout 1 Team X Patch fixes quite a few bugs but a lot less than the Killap Fallout 2 patch, because Fallout 1 has a lot less bugs in it. And the High Resolution Patches allow you to change the resolution and change 8/16 bit colours from the SCRN button in the preferences menu. Make sure you put these in the right place as I had some trouble with these patches. Edited July 4, 2009 by Reconite ilya

SaintJimmy
Haha, thanks for those High Res patches! Although, half the fun of FO1/2 is playing it in 16bit color at 640x480. Lol.
Otter
Playing FO2 at 1650x1080 makes my eyes bleed. I love it. Thanks for the links!
Otter
Ok, so hears a stupid question - I boned both Mr Bishop's wife and daughter, but when I went downstairs my followers were missing. Any idea how to get them back? Do they go home? Edit - Sorry for the DP.
blitsie
I saw a nice special on the trilogy pack, but for some stupid reason I didn't buy,now I can't find it anywhere. does gametap still have it for free?
SaintJimmy
does gametap still have it for free? In Australia its found in alot of places. Check your bargain bins, man! I just got back into FO2. Struggled to begin with as per usual but yeah, back into it now. I just headed to the Den and am not giving a flying f*ck about the main storyline. And I killed two dealers and took alot of their sh*t - good stuff to trade for some early cash! Gonna buy me that Highwayman soon!
Reconite
anyone in england got the white label fallout collection Yeah I got that one (Scotland over here). Ok, so hears a stupid question - I boned both Mr Bishop's wife and daughter, but when I went downstairs my followers were missing. Any idea how to get them back? Do they go home? I think you've run into a glitch mate, it might be smart to have the fo2 patches I recommended installed before playing again (if you are contemplating playing again). I saw a nice special on the trilogy pack, but for some stupid reason I didn't buy,now I can't find it anywhere. does gametap still have it for free? The Trilogy 3 pack is the American equivalent to the White Label collection, so I don't know where you would find one over there. And don't be fooled, even though it's called "Trilogy" it does not have Fallout 3, it has 1, 2 and Tactics. And about Gametap, I don't think it's safe to download it from there even if it is free, I heard they have viruses in their database. I'd check eBay or another online buying site for it. Haha, thanks for those High Res patches! Thanks for the links! Np guys!
Otter
Well, what should typically happen then, in those instances where you are, say, transported to a bedroom for sex? Do your followers end up in the room with you? EDIT - nevermind. I looked into the unnofficial patch, and low and behold, it's one of the addressed bugs. Strange. I'm already playing with the official patch. If I install the unofficial patch, will I need to start my game over? Stupid question, as you've already answered it, but I'm clinging to hope. Thanks homeslice. Edited July 5, 2009 by Otter
Reconite
I'm afraid you will have to start again because if you install the patch and then try load your file it will say "Unable to load". But it's ok because if you get the Restoration Patch aswell it will add a lot of lost content to the game that was taken out before fo2 release and there is more adventure. I only got the patches after I fixed Gecko and finished Vault City, then I had to start again, so you're not alone on that one. Just make sure you get everything you need installed into the right place before you start again then you're good to go. And make sure you get the latest versions of these patches. Good luck! SaintJimmy
Get ready for some good news, boys. You actually don't have to start again. Fallout II Savegame Converter. It patches your savegame so it works with the 1.2d patch! Enjoy.
Reconite
Oh yeah lmao, I heard about that but forget to tell you guys I think it only works with the american version btw, that's why I was not fully aware. Thanks for pointing that out. EDIT: I just realized that, that savegame converter may not work with the unofficial patch as it says it converts 1.00 to 1.02 which is the Official patch that still has a lot of bugs. I'unno, try for yourself. Edited July 25, 2009 by Reconite

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm using...god, I don't know what version. But whatever version I'm using, it works. LOL, I just totally slept with Mrs. Bishop AND her daughter. sh*t was so cash. Otter
Bah, I needed to start over anyhow. I was spending points on rather useless stats.
Zook
heres a tip after you have completed it use the editor falche you can change your stats i think it brings a whole new side of the game out
Reconite
No... don't edit your stats after you complete the game, go to father tully in new reno (DON'T KILL THIS GUY, IT'S CRUCIAL) and he will give you the Fallout 2 Hint Book which maxes all your stats up. Also after you completed the game, the guy in the basement of the New Reno Arms gun shop will upgrade your Plasma Rifle for a Turbo Plasma Rifle for free, he does it with other weapons aswell before you complete the game like the Power Fist > Mega Power Fist (so don't kill him either). Wonderbro
I'm thinking of installing F2, because my PC won't play F3.
Reconite
Yeah, my PC can't take Fallout 3 at the moment, the graphics card is weak and I need a new one (F3 worked on my old pc). But install 2 and you won't regret it, it's awesome.
Zook
anyone think fallout 2 is better than faout 3 i do
Otter
They're... entirely different. But to be honest, I do prefer the atmosphere of 2 - tons of cities, the whole tribal aspect, the feeling that people are actually trying to make a life for themselves within this world. I really dig turn-based gameplay. I also really dig FPS. I think Fallout 3 really should have had a more structured AP system, where checking your inventory, dodging, even shooting outside of VATS, reduces your action points. I don't know. It's hard to translate a turn-based system to a realtime one.
Zook
i also think that fallout 2 has alot more quests and alot of ways to complete them alot of fallout 3 quest are like talk to this guy kill everyone talk again

SaintJimmy
Fallout 2 is definitely better than 3 in my opinion. I love that there's a mafia-ey aspect of it. Eg., the families of New Reno, the assassination missions in BOTH 1 and 2...and the drug-ridden culture of Fallout 2. It's excellent. I think I'd have to say I KIND OF prefer 2 over 3, but as Otter put it - they're two completely different games.
Reconite
[RANT] If we're not allowed to compare 1 and 2 to 3, how come the 10 year old Fallout 3 fanboys are? They're always saying 3 is better because of the graphics and giving really f*cking sh*t excuses (they would never have got Fallout 3 if 1 and 2 didn't come out + the fact that F3 was made 10 years after 2 so it's not fair to compare graphics), what gives them the right to compare them and us not? 2 > 3 'nuff said. I might not feel that way if Bethesda didn't take out all the totally awesome stuff. Bethesda may call it an 18 but they didn't keep any of the stuff that made F2 an 18, they're secretly getting sales of little f*cking kids telling their mums to buy the game for them because it contains no overage stuff that 10 year olds aren't allowed to see. [/RANT] And that's how I feel on the matter. Edited July 25, 2009 by Reconite
