A testament to the enduring appeal of giant anthropomorphized robots is currently towering over a Tokyo park as we speak: a full-scale replica of the iconic Gundam RX-78-2 is almost complete, making it the first ever in-scale mobile suit to accurately portray the proportions of the legendary mecha.

Bandai, in conjunction with the Japanese government, built the 59-foot-tall monument in Tokyo's Odaiba Shiokaze park to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the landmark Mobile Suit Gundam animated series. Gundam began as a television show in 1979 and went on to spawn movies, books, video games, comics, toys, more TV series, and every other merchandising tie-in imaginable.

The monument will be officially unveiled on July 11, and will continue to watch over the people of Tokyo until the end of the summer.

AWESOME images, and an awesome video. This thing moves, lights up, lets off steam, and has awesome theme music!

And "now that the Gundam is complete, Kobe's Wakamatsu Park is next on the list to build their very own life-sized Tetsujin (also known as Gigantor, I believe). 60 feet tall and weighing in at 50 tons, Tetsujin will be on permanent display starting in October (an installation that may turn to semi-permanent should Tetsujin grow tired of photo ops)." Here's concept art similar to the daytime pic of the Gundam robot:

So yeah, pretty awesome. Those Japanese, they're f*cking awesome man. They're gonna usher us into the future if 2012 doesn't kill us all first. Big ass robots people, imagine the possibilities. A Gundam for every man, woman, and child. I'm gonna name mine Seymour! Think about it, wars being fought with Gundam-type robots. Doesn't seem so crazy anymore.

I don't like where robotics is going, though. I'm not exactly afraid they're going to rise up one day and take over the world, but I do think that in the future they could put a lot of humans out of work. I don't want to see everything in the world done by robots in 30-40 years time.

I love it. But I think it has some competition. Kill 'em with cuteness (and creepiness) London!

I'd love to see that in person.

First time I saw that little girl vid, I was quite creeped out. But most impressed, and this Gundam thing just further blows my mind. It's art.

I'd love to see them hang out together. But if we wanna talk mechas - these have always blown my mind too.

Redneck art to the max. A lot of fun. I don't know what possesses some of the people - but I love the results.

And then there's this one:

I love how casual the dude is. What a f*cking massive undertaking.

That's completety amazing, but I was a bit disappointed. I thought it could walk, not just move his head. Also lol at the theme music.

Omnia sunt Communia

Only in Japan.

That Gigantor statue looks like it's going to be awesome. I only wish other anime got the same treatment. Dragonball Z turned 20 this year and the only thing it got was a rubbish OVA and the original series re-released in HDTV.

Hell! Outlaw Star turned 10 last year. I wouldn't mind seeing them make a scale replica of the ship of the same name:

I was introduced to Gundam Dynasty Warriors for the PS3 the other week. The game was addictive but repetitive...and was entirely in Japanese so I had to make up my own story line. But DANG!!! I made a 59ft Gundam robot?! Is it really a robot or just a statue/model etc? I'd be amazed with it was a robot...something the US should think about when it comes to new advanced weapons. GO GO POWER RANGERS!

Now let's just see if they can make a Big Zam. lol.gif

Let's just say the Gundam wouldn't be much larger than its foot.

Good to see evidence that the Japanese government are utilizing their time, money and resources not only maturely but effectively. icon14.gif

Now that's out of the way, what the hell is it?

Now that's out of the way, what the hell is it?

From Wiki:

The RX-78 Gundam is the iconic Gundam mecha design, introduced in 1979 in Yoshiyuki Tomino's and Sunrise's anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. In Mobile Suit Gundam, it is a testbed weapon for the Earth Federation, when it falls into the hands of Amuro Ray, the son of a weapons designer, who goes on to pilot it in the Earth Federation's war against the Principality of Zeon.

As the success of Mobile Suit Gundam began the Gundam franchise, this design was the first of many variations in subsequent works. The design appearing in Mobile Suit Gundam, called the RX-78-2 Gundam serves as the iconic symbol of the Gundam franchise and sparked the creation of its multiple sequels and spinoffs.

So it's an awe-inspiring commemoration of the Gundam mecha design that started it all. Frankly, I'd now love to see a life-size Godzilla animatronic, who's with me?

That is what i would like to see. I think Godzilla is more famous then Gundam and everybody likes Godzilla. They should built that instead of this statue with a moving head.

Screw Godzilla, I want to see Gamera! Or maybe give one of these robots the technology of ASIMO. It would be crazy to see them walking and running around.

OK, this has proven that the Japanese are in fact totally crazy (well, before this it was already publically known).

Still, they're crazy ... but they know how to make sh*t! Damnit. This also reminds me that I really want to visit Japan in the future.

See, now that's real. That's getting closer to what we actually need.

Something that functions .

That other crap is stupid. that gundam "robot"

is a big plastic statue that smokes and the head pivots.

I saw the head move and thought " oh damn that things

about to take off" nope not a robot.

now that guy in your post with the mech. not the spider

but the big mech, he had that up for sale back in 93-95

and I think someone in japan bought it. never heard of

anything on it since then.

I remember because it was covered on G4 back when g4 was pretty good.

Awesome statue indeed, but what interests me more is the last 3 videos posted by Otter. If that's what ordinary civilians can build, then i'd love to see what the Military has created in terms of powered mechs, particularly the U.S and Japan.
