Rename cities, GTA-style

Anyway, my contribution: Seattle=Lowery City

London has always been the hardest one, for me, to come up with a name for. London is such an iconic name and coming up with something that doesn't sound fake or foced it quite hard. I've managed to come up with a few for other English cities (Harchester for Manchester, for example) though London's always been the hardest.

 

The problem is, having something like "Majestic City" (a name I used before), just doesn't sound right and sounds more American than British.

I put Lonsdale City, After the Make of that hoodie Brand.

* Vancouver- Vanajax (Vancouver comes from van Coeverden, which means someone from Coeverden in Dutch. Ajax is another city in Holland)

*Montreal- Ville-Neige (City of Snow in French. Montreal gets a lot of snowfall. used to be called Ville-Marie, "City of Mary")

*Ottawa- Pontiac City (Chief Pontiac was a member of the Odawa tribe, which the city is named after)

*Toronto- Upper York City (city was once called York, once capital of Upper Canada)

*Calgary- Cow City (Calgary is nicknamed both Stampede City and Cowtown)

*Edmonton- Roughneck's Way (city is noted for oil. named after a London borough where a Roman road once passed)

*Halifax- Churchill Harbour (Halifax is noted for its harbour, Lord Halifax was opposite Winston Churchill in the candidacy for PM after Chamberlain stepped down)

*Winnipeg- Murky Rapids (Winnipeg means muddy waters in Cree, the city has 4 major rivers going through it)

I like Lonsdale City for London (or maybe just Lonsdale), but I came up with Britchester.

 

Washington DC could be something like Franklin DC or even better Jefferson DC, which has the same rhythm to the syllables.

 

New Orleans could simply be Delta City, because if you name it something like New Bordeaux, then it implies Bordeaux exists in the GTA world, but like all cities Bordeaux would actually be named something else.

 

Sydney in Oz could be Botany, after Botany Bay nearby.

I think this is what they were originally going to call it, and forgot to change the dialogues.. I know that the Statue of Hapiness was originally going to be called the Statue of Freedom, and the helitours pilot calls it the Statue of Freedom, because they forgot to change it.

 

And Alderney is NOT a city, it is referred to "The separate state of Alderney", and it has cities in it (Acter, Tudor, Westdyke, etc.)

Yeah, what he said. Guernsy was the original name for Jersey back in the first GTA. Being that IV was going to use the NY/NJ locations again, R* probably going to used the original name, but decided to changed to Alderney.

Yeah I agree. The thing R* does is makes the name have some relevance to the city its portraying or sounds similar. Like Las Venturras. Everyone knows that it's based on Las Vegas just by the name, or Liberty City. It uses "Liberty" in the name which we all know is taken from The Statue of Liberty.

 

London is a tough one to try to make a name for. It needs to have some sort of reference to the city, or it needs to sound similar.

 

Maybe call it Buckingham after Buckingham Palace? Or to give it a GTA style name, call it Buckingheim?

Buckingham works quite well, actually though it doesn't have the same ring to it as London does. I just think that London's been so ingrained into our society over the last thousand or so years that it's hard to simply come up with a "replacement."

Amen Brother. Lol but yeah Alderney is no Gurseny but that would be homeage to GTA 1 players that I care nothing about.

In all seriousness though, I've come up with a few more city names for my upcoming "Grand Theft Auto San Fierro Bay" topic. The obvious one is San Fierro, which is based on San Francisco (though I already mentioned that one). The other cities I've got so far are:

Dublin -> Blackpool

 

The original Irish name for the town was "Dubh Linn" (hard to see where the name came from, huh?), which translates into English as "black pool". It's purely coincidential that there's a town in Lancashire called Blackpool).

 

Inicidentally, I'm working on my own GTA set in Ireland. Dublin is - unsurprisingly - one of the main cities, and I'm using the Irish names (I can get by in Irish, but I wouldn't say I'm fluent in it) for the main three cities.

Unless it's before GTA IV, Derrick is one of the two choices That you can choose to kill, Either Derrick or Francis, So derrick can't be a choice After IV

Derrick is 52 years-old by the time of GTA IV, when he had just returned from Ireland (the Old Country). Though it was never stated when he left for Ireland. He does, however, have a string of offences ranging from the 1970s to 1980s though we don't know if these were committed in Ireland or America.

 

I don't think it would be a wise move playing as Derrick, as he is a terrorist and member of the IRA. I think we might see him make an appearance in an Ireland-based game though I wouldn't want to play as him. Gerry wouldn't be a wise choice either because he has not travelled to Ireland like Derrick had, same with Packie.
