KevinR1990
With the exception of the London expansions for the original, no GTA game has ever been set in an actual, real-life city. Instead, Rockstar has always created new cities based on their real-life counterparts with different names. New York, for example, became Liberty City, Miami became Vice City, and Los Angeles became Los Santos. So I want you guys to come up with new, GTA-style names for real-world cities and states, as if you were designing a game set in said location. Be creative, and don't go for the obvious (like "Windy City" for Chicago -- then again, Liberty City is located in a state called "Liberty City State"). I'll get it started: Boston: Winthrop (named after John Winthrop, the founder of Boston) Massachusetts: Plymouth (after the Plymouth colony) Atlanta: Peachtree (after Georgia's peach farms and Atlanta's Peachtree Street) Denver: Fremont (after explorer John C. Fremont, and taken from my GTA: Cheyenne idea) Colorado: Cheyenne (again, taken from my GTA: Cheyenne idea) New Orleans: New Bordeaux (after the French city) Washington DC: Hamilton DC (after Alexander Hamilton)

ldee
If they're doing London they should call it Noldon. It still sounds alright and believable as a British city.

If you read my 7 page topic you'll find that many people liked the name " Lonsdale City ". It isn't my own name but their was no harm in using it

Omnia sunt Communia
I've come up with a few: Manchester: Grand Theft Auto Harchester; based on "Athairceaster" which is Old English/Gaelic for "Father Town." Manchester comes from the Old English/Gaelic "Mammceaster" which means "Mother/Breast Town." Other candidates included Boddchester which means "Penis Town." Philadelphia: Grand Theft Auto Holton; comes from the Lenape for "love eachother" (Hoalton). Philadelphia means "brotherly love" in Greek and the Lenape where the native American tribe who inhabited Philadelphia before William Penn founded the city. Their chief was also known for his loving and accepting attitude. Atlantic City: Grand Theft Auto Pacific City; Atlantic City was originally known as "Atlanta-Pacifica" but eventually became shortened to Atlantic City. Part of the humour would be the fact that it was called Pacific City despite the fact that it lay on the Atlantic Ocean. Citizens would be voting to change the name to something more "logical" (AKA Atlantis). Havana: Grand Theft Auto Cigaro; I think it is Cuban/Spanish for "cigar box" though I cannot remember now. Used for a never published Vice City concept of mine. Havana: Grand Theft Auto Castro City; named after the Cuban dictator. London: Grand Theft Auto Majestic City; comes from London's "majestic" image as home of the Royal Family and crown jewel in the British Empire. I used it for a now defunct thread of mine. London: Grand Theft Auto Aldwych; simply a old name used before London. Nothing fancy. Never got used. I find London is the hardest city to come up with names for. Though I spent a rather long time on the name for Philadelphia.
Sanjeem
London-I used Lonsdale City, because of the clothing make that was at one phase people were wearing them like crazy all around the city, thats what made me think of it.

RomanViking
I've been thinking a lot about Asian cities; like Tokyo, Hong Kong, etc... but I couldn't really come up with a name that sounded natural. Detroit would definetly be Carcer City though. The only name I came up with for Tokyo was Edo- which it was originally called. I've thought up a few okay Russian and Asian names though: Plevmir and Lakonaki... Lonsdale sounds good; they already made San Francisco San Fierro though. Philly being called Holton isn't bad, and it has some meaning behind it. Edited July 3, 2009 by RomanViking

I cannot remember what I called it though. The only thing I remember is that it translated to "Capital City" or something generic like that. I'll try and see if I can dig it out. Huang Leeroy
This was how I named some to the cities in my Alderney thread: • Normanton (Newark) - Normanton, Lincolnshire in the UK is east of Newark-On-Trent, where Newark gets its name from. • Alvaton (Edison) - Edison is named after Thomas Alva Edison. I just took his middle name and used it for the city name. • Trenchtown (Trenton) - This is just basically one of the nicknames of Trenton. • Pratten (Camden) - Camden gets its name from Earl of Camden. Charles Pratt was the first Earl of Camden. • Hollowfield (Irvington) - Irvington is named after Washington Irving, the author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow • Monopoly City (Atlantic City) - The streets in the Monopoly game was named after Atlantic City streets. Thats just to name a few.
SanAndreasManiac
what about for Brazil: Rio de Janeiro = Lago de Dezembro (translating the names, we get: January's River, December's Lake) São paulo = São Pedro (both are saints, Saint Paul, Saint Peter)
General Goose
Baltimore-Bornacoola: The city was named after Lord Baltimore, who took his name from a place in Bornacoola Parish. Palermo-Colonna: Colonna was one of the first Sicilian Mafiosos.

canesknights
Atlanta: (can't think of anything yet) New Orleans: Jazz City Chicago: Skytown (referencing the skyscrapers, and it rhymes with Chi-town) San Diego: Santiago (yes, this is a city in Chile, but both Liberty City and San Andreas are real places, so this wouldn't disqualify it) Phoenix: Cactus City Seattle: Rain City Some of these are pretty lame, but I didn't put too much thought into it. grope_4_that_date
could Rockstar just name London, London if they wanted to... or would London get pissed? Jamaica sould be named "Marley" (for obvious reasons) new orleans should be named atlantis (haaaahahaaaaaahhaa!!!) and seattle should definately be re-named "rain city"

Omnia sunt Communia
London has always been the hardest one, for me, to come up with a name for. London is such an iconic name and coming up with something that doesn't sound fake or foced it quite hard. I've managed to come up with a few for other English cities (Harchester for Manchester, for example) though London's always been the hardest. The problem is, having something like "Majestic City" (a name I used before), just doesn't sound right and sounds more American than British.
