Peppermints
Since i've first installed it i've had numerous problems, i had to update the drivers and NET framework and stuff like that, but the game still crashes on me every2-10 minutes into the game. When it's running it runs very smoothly with most settings on high, but playing it for more than ten minutes is just impossible. I've tried a few solutions that worked for other people (changing my virtual memory, turning off the "record clips" setting, patching it) but nothing works for me. In the middle of gameplay the screen just freezes up and the graphics get distorted into squares, and i have to reboot the computer. This also happens if i go into the pause menu or change any options mid-game. I heard that closing down the Rockstar social club client after starting the game works for people, but i can't pull it off, because the game doesn't want to minimize when I hit ctrl-alt-del after starting it up, and thus can't close the thing down. Does anyone have any other solutions, has had the same problem and solved it, or has a link to a forum thread or site with info on how to fix this thing, cause i am getting really frustrated with it. My pc has a 3gigs of ram, a radeon 4870 and a quad core pentium, i don't exactly know which one, i'm currently not home, but if it's relevant i'll tell you later when i get there. thanks in advance
Jc84144
To minmize you shouldn't have to use ctrl+alt+delete. Use Window key + M for minmize, or Windows key + D for Show Desktop.

MitchyK
Are other games running ok? Because from your description it sounds like it could be an overheating issue. GTA IV pushes your PC very hard, and if you have any cooling problems it will show up very quickly like this. Especially as you say you've tried every fix possible. Are you overclocking anything? Try running the temperature montitoring tool that came with your motherboard, you can usually set them to write to a log, so it will keep going while you're in game, and you can see if you have an overheating problem. If you can't find your temp monitor program try downloading; CORETEMP, i use it for some things and it works fine and monitors all four cores seperately on my quad. Other than that it could be a faulty PSU on it's way out, as the symptoms are often similar. MitchyK Edited July 3, 2009 by MitchyK

Peppermints
I'm gonna try checking that, but every other game runs perfectly fine. I can run crysis on high settings very smoothly for several hours, it never crashed on me.
MitchyK
Crysis stresses your graphics card more than CPU, It's worth checking your CPU temps running GTA to rule out heat issues. MitchyK
Peppermints
The CPU temperature didn't go over 45 degrees and the game still crashed.

mkey82
Which OS are you using? 1) Have you tried the memrestict commandline? 2) This is most probably not a .net problem because you need it only to start the game. If you have doubts about RGSC, use xliveless which bypasses that crap 3) This may be a driver issue. Download the latest drivers (I assume you already did that), use driver cleaner to cleanup all (if any) remnants from old drivers and install the fresh ones. There is a guide in the FAQ if you are unsure.
Peppermints
I just remembered that all this time i've been running GTA in compatibility mode because i don't have service pack 3 installed, and that this might be causing the crashing, So I decided to try installing the pack and reinstalling GTA, but the thing won't install! It's like my computer has conspired against me or something, absolutley nothing wants to work. I downloaded the service pack installer from the microsoft site, but every time i try to install it the installation process bar stops at around three quarters and doesnt want to go on, no matter how long i wait. In the install details window it says it's "performing cleanup" when the bar stops. Do you think that the lack of service pack 3 and the fact that i'm trying to run gta in compatibility mode might be causing the crashes? Do you have any idea how i can fix this installation problem and get the service pack to install properly?

Peppermints
ok, I've installed service pack 3, and tried running the game without the compatibility mode but i stil get the same f*****g s**t! Sorry, but i'm getting reeaaaaly frustrated with this game, it just doesn't want to run. I run it, then, mid game, the screen blacks out and and the audio freezes and i have to reboot. Again. EDIT: Now i've tried the radeon 4800 driver fix that someone posted, and installing xliveless, but still nothing works. The game just crashes as usual. Bings
I have exactly the same problem. Did you find any solution? Driver updates, bios update, commandline.txt etc... nothing worked for me. The game always crashes/freezes. Sometimes it already crashes while loading a mission. Specs: - Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 (rev 1.0), latest BIOS F14 - 4 GB RAM - 512 MB ATI Radeon HD 4850 (latest drivers: Catalyst 9.8) - Windows XP Prof. SP3 (with latest updates) Any ideas?
