Yarpie
Seriously, who cares? In all of the reviews i've read and watched about games -looking to buy some- they always mention texture popping. What do you expect? The thing that bothers me though is frame rate drops, this I will not tolerate from a game. Any thoughts?
manofpeace
I only get irritated by texture popping if it's very frequent and textures that do pop are either very large/important (say, for instance, a building across the street), or are the kind that only pop if you look at them from a certain angle or if you're within a certain radius of it. Besides that, I don't really care about it, as long as the game's fun and smooth.
mkey82
Texture popup does wonders for immersion for me. In a negative sense. I plain old don't like it. This is why I love to have the option to cut down on settings to have everything running fluid even if at lower detail level.
blitsie
I don't mind it that much, but if its major stuff like buildings etc. then it gets a bit annoying. I remember experiencing some major texture popping in GTAIV (PC version). Fortunately the patches fixes it (thanks for that,R*)
Slamman
It varies console game to console game, but compared to the reviews I recall, there's justification in the reaction you see from gamers. There's far too much compared to the sprawling miles of draw-in that reviews seem to mention in excited detail. I don't know how they miss this stuff, to be quite honest!! Otter
It's one of those things that reviewers are trying to solve with negative press - and I'm all for it. One day, we'll see nearly seamless LOD shifts, and untill that days comes, we should all keep prodding.
Slamman
The reviews Keep saying each new game, and with GTA4 in mind here, the draw and distance becomes ever greater. I'm sure you can't deny that to be the case, sarcastic or not
Otter
I don't think I understand what the f*ck you're saying, so no, I doubt I could deny that in all good faith. If you're trying to say that they should quit whining, then I have to ask - what's the purpose of a critic in the first place? Anyhow, texture pop-up, while not as visually alarming as model popup, is bloody jarring. The crossfading effect seen in some games like GTA4 is quite interesting, but still falls a little short of the solution.
Slamman
Please don't give me that, I know YOU'RE not that DUMB! If you followed the reviews, mostly RIGHT here, they claimed all the advantages of new engines as was the case with GTA Four, and other Next Gen game builds, but we clearly reported much of the same pop in and texture problems that were absent in the press leading up to the release. Rather then hunt down an article, look clearly at location pop in that was evident in the Xbox360 version as well as PS3. PS3 in particular had very slow fill in of the grass textures. Both game versions had issues with the doors of buildings, and Xbox, with the road details
Otter
I honestly don't understand what you're trying to say. Honestly. Call me dumb, or whatever, but your posts are f*cking unintelligible. Are you saying that texture pop in IS a problem? Then yes, I agree with you. Are you saying it is NOT a problem? Then I entirely disagree with you. Read your f*cking posts out loud to yourself before you hit that reply button, for god's sake.
Slamman
I check my posts for errors, so YES, I read them and I know what I submitted. I guess I have to call you "dumb" then. It was clearly debated in the GTA forum for some time. You are not reading them carefully enough yourself, as I stated the pop in effects on both console games, having bought them. That they were a problem the press reviews DID NOT state openly. Some here even felt the bias was in probability, bribes from Rockstar for glowing reviews. The problems seen in prior games still persist in some regard. I am not saying next Gen (this gen) gaming failed but that there is lack if a proper mention in the press, like the IGN video preview the week the game came out, I enjoyed it still however Edited July 4, 2009 by Slamman
supermortalhuman
@slamman: I have to say, calling him dumb is calling the kettle black. Or I'm just stupid as well. I'm American (Otter is Canadian so I assume he speaks English and so being American is not a factor, plus Canada is America, but either way, being from the US is not a factor here) and I have no idea what you said. At all. The last post was intelligible up until about the 4th line. Read your post, and say it out loud while you read it. Does it sound like something you would understand if I said it to you? All the posts until that one felt like I was reading some form of proper lorum ipsum or keyword stuffed blogs. It's true. lol. I am so amused half the time by your posts all over this forum because sometimes you say some incredibly insightful sh*t, but most of the time it's like "What did he just say? What article spinner is he using and why?" I promise you, this is not anything but the truth, I'm not mad about you calling me names or anything - I know how the things I say sound to people at first, I know what I look like. I accept it. I'm not mad at you, I think you're really entertaining, and like I said, sometimes quite insightful. But let someone read your posts to you, in person. Trust me, they will be like "lolwut?". Go make a topic in Gen Chat "Do you understand my posts?". Put a poll. Edited July 4, 2009 by supermortalhuman
gtathebest4ever
i don't know about you guys, but it REALLY bothers me, even the slightest amount. even worse are the flickering textures in some games.
Panz
I honestly don't pay much attention to texture popping, but a few months ago, I played the original Driver for PS1. The buildings across the street from me would pop up when I was directly across from them. It's hilarious. Honestly, I'm perfectly happy with the current gaming draw distance. It's better than I ever thought it would be.
Otter
Oh man, Panz, that was such an awesome game. I agree, it's come a loooong way, but texture pop-in really sucks out the immersion. There's still a long way to go before my expectations are exceeded. At Slamman - so, finally, I think you've cleared it up. Excuse me for avoiding the GTA4 section. However, I know the IGN reviews have complained about texture pop-in, and even tried to determine what system suffers less. Are you perhaps confusing the issue with draw distance?
