Violins77
hey guys ! I've been reading this forum for a long time now but never registered. I have bought GTA IV when it came out in last december but I have never been able to run the game at an acceptable framerate for me. Right now I have a C2D E6400 OCed to 2,4 GHZ and a GTX 260. Now after reading about it for the last 6 months, it's now well known that my CPU is the real problem here. But now I will upgrade my machine in about a month or two and I need advice from you guys. Don't worry, it's not yet another "can I run it" thread, because I know it will run it, but I just want to know what I can expect in terms of performance. I'm upgrading to : Intel Core I7 920, 6GB DDR3, and I'm keeping my GTX 260 (not core 216 but superclocked)... And I'm planning at running it in 1680x1050 So will I be able to pretty much max it out ? Will my 896MB video card be enough to maintain over 35 FPS all the time ?
luceberg
Should run well with that gear, with a 64bit OS preferably.
john88z
You wont be able to max it out but you'll get comfortably close. If all you play is gta then the 6gb will be a waste, just get 4gb then you can save some. At reasonably high settings and that resolution you should be getting 35 with maybe some dips but thats gta. Violins77
No, I'm playing a lot of other games than GTA... But honestly, I'm a bit dissapointed. I tough with that gear I'd be able to run it pretty close to max at 45+ FPS... I don't mind turning down some shadows, and not having the "highest" texture settings, but I was hoping for max view distance and and good FPS... luceberg
Maximum view distance and detail distance are not a big deal. I set them at 26 and 56 and can hardly tell from max. If fps is so important to you, juggle with the settings to get them. Personally I like all high, high textures, high shadows, shadow density 8 and can put up with 25-30 fps. The_Cheese_Man
Get the GTX 260 Core 216. It will be better than your superclocked since you can probably overclock the Core 216 card on your own.
Violins77
Well I will not sell my GTX 260 to get a GTX 260 core 216... that would be a waste of money. Like I said, I already own the GTX 260 so I'm keeping it. I'm just upgrading the rest of my computer. From what I read, the GTX 260 core 216 is just faster by 5 or 6 % anyway so not a worthy upgrade...

Waste getting 4gig, when you can get triple channel 3*2gig. In any case, he could OC his ram abit depending on the speed it comes in, and it could perform just abit slower than the vram, and he can substitute some of his DDR3 ram as vram. shivanandrs
You wont be able to max it out but you'll get comfortably close. True. You should also be able to keep 35+ FPS with that rig at any given time in the game. Even more so if you plan to overclock your processor. With my setup i can keep 30+ FPS...that is until i start some chaos with the LCPD dudes I also have not applied the new v1.0.4 update yet. I will when i get some time later today.
