PappaCube
I have stopped playing GTA4 since around January when a patch or somthing required me to be logged into MS Live in order to save my game. I wouldn't have been so upset if they had worked out a clean transition to this but instead I lost weeks of game play and couldn't recover as all my save games would report that the save game was corrupt. So, I refused to play anymore RockStar games until they move away from this barbaric attitude about their customers. I am just wondering if we still have to be signed into MS Live in order to save games on the PC version? If so, you wont hear from me again. I promise. ikt
you can use a mod that disables live and puts the save files in a folder that's easier to reach, so you can download 100% savegames and such. xliveless
CharmingCharlie
You have NEVER had to sign into GFWL to save a game, I don't know why people keep saying this bullsh*t. If you do not want to use GFWL then you create an OFF LINE account which allows you to play regardless of whether you sign into gfwl or not. The only disadvantage to an off line account is no achievements and no MP.

I've tried following the seemingly simple directions to create one but the options they mention just do not exist.

If yes, then that's your problem. You'll need to logout of your online account first and then the option to create an offline profile will be available. Hell GTA 4 even allows those without the internet to register there copy manually, so come on here why would they allow you to register a game on a PC with no internet if you couldn't play the game ? Since it's launch you have been able to create an OFF line account, it isn't rocket science. All you need to do is press Home when GTA 4 is loaded, if you are signed into GFWL then SIGN OUT. Click on Create New profile and then create offline profile and you are good to go.
